New Under Armour uniforms for the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, they were previously with Adidas.

I'd assume there's a gray road uniform in the same template too.

I was about to ask why do all of the players have a 3 on them and then I remembered that is the logo for the Big West Conference

And actually making them blue too

Agreed. However some professors at A&M did manage to alter bluebonnets to become maroonbonnets. I remember a few years back some A&M students spread a bunch of seeds of the maroon variety in the beds where bluebonnets appear at UT and come march UTs campus had a lovely shade of maroon everywhere

All the wordmarks on the men’s jerseys are throwbacks to what the first black players at each school wore, so that’s the past element. The present/future element is the “give ’em their flowers while they’re still here” patterns on the side panels and in the wordmarks, which were created with either the state flower of each school or one that is iconic to campus (like the maroon bluebonnet on the Aggies’ uni).

Those were bluebonnets? Maybe looking from the top. A side profile would have made it more clear those were bluebonnets.

Red-on-yellow is back for the Chiefs. Always a welcome sight, but it maybe proves that each team has a set endzone colorway for this game and that they weren't just choosing yellow for contrast with the 49ers' and Bucs' red.

Eagles' dull new wordmark makes its SB debut — seeing it here, it seems like it was designed to fold seamlessly into the Super Bowl house style, ideal proportions, no more off-center arch to deal with.

Would love for helmets and conference logos to return, but this is a fun-looking field, thanks in large part to the SBLVII logo itself.

I had forgotten that the Eagles changed their word mark,  This one does look much better in the current super bowl template than the previous one.

  5. Texas A&M has worn a couple of different one-time alts from Adidas the past 2 weekends.

Pink was worn for breast cancer awareness.

This is supposed to honor black excellence. The aggTies is a throwback look. I'm not familair enough with the rest to know what it represents other than what the tweet says

The North Stars seem like a fair comparison to the Texans in this case. Metro area loses beloved team, gets an expansion franchise, but fanbase still pines for the old look.

I don't know much about the Houston market: in terms of local popularity, are the Texans the most popular? Like, have the people of Houston over the past 20 years fully embraced the franchise?

I ask because teams seem to make these rebranding moves as a means of re-energizing a fanbase. If the community isn't fully engaged with the Texans as-is — and it wouldn't be surprising considering the on-field performance of late — then returning to a color scheme steeped in nostalgia would seem like a low-risk/high-reward move, the benefits of which could carry forward for decades.

It's a much more controversial topic in Minnesota, where the community has enthusiastically embraced the Wild, but the tug of nostalgia remains strong.

The Texans were fully embraced and supported through many bad seasons from the start until the end of the 2019 season. Then the Texans made many horrible trades (Deandre Hopkins and cuts in the name of "team culture." You combine that with Deshaun Watson asking to be traded followed by the numerous allegations and many locally just stopped caring. The team went from a mid-pack playoff contender to bottom dweller overnight. They had a season ticket waiting list over 15,000 deep and now the waiting list is non-existent.  If the team showed some signs of life the fans would come back fast as we do love our football here. But its hard to support a franchise that for a few years it did not seem they were trying to field a good team. If they went with columbia blue it would provide a spark as the only time the Texans have been mentioned locally in the past 3 years was as a punchline.

I'm still trying to get used to there being a "SomethingCU" school that's not affiliated with the Disciples of Christ nor has purple, black and white as its colors.

Abilene Christian University is affiliated with Church of Christ (which broke away from Disciples of Christ in the late 19th century early 20th century.) Grand Canyon University started as a Baptist University. But you're right about it being weird seeing the acronym without it being purple

  8. The Dynamo's stadium has a new name. What became PNC Stadium after PNC bought out BBVA's US banks, is now renamed after Shell's retail energy division to become Shell Energy Stadium. This is the 4th name for the stadium about to begin its 11th season.

    BBVA Compass Stadium (2012–2019)
    BBVA Stadium (2019–2021)
    PNC Stadium (2021–2022)

    Shell Energy Stadium (2023-Present)

As far as I can tell, having the schools design a logo started with the BCS NCG in 2006. Almost all of them have obvious references to the location of the game. The only exceptions are Auburn's (by far the worst one) and Ohio State's (unless the shield means something).

I like the references to the city/region or stadium. Really don't care for skylines, though. They're hardly ever well known enough to be identified without someone pointing it out first. The only ones I could honestly pick out are Seattle, NYC, Dallas, and Atlanta.

Excited to see what UGA comes up with for Houston next year ;)

I may be biased but we (Houston) have a pretty good skyline :)

It will probably be space themed as that is our most unique local design feature other generic texas theme or oil companies

    Adding onto this.

9 of the 12 teams in the Pac-12 will be wearing Nike or Jordan in 2023. Washington and Arizona State are both Adidas while Utah is the lone remaining Under Armour team.

Thats pretty much true for all college conferences except the SWAC.

    SEC

    Nike/Jordan - 10

    Adidas - 2

    Under Armour - 2

    Big 12

    Nike/Jordan - 8 11

    Adidas - 1

    Under Armour - 1 2

    Big Ten

    Nike/Jordan - 9

    Adidas - 3

    Under Armour - 1

    ACC

    Nike/Jordan - 9

    Adidas - 4*

    Under Armour - 1**

    New Balance - 1*

Their 10 year deal started in 2017 so it ended early but I haven't seen anything regarding if Under Armour was able to terminate it or if they reached a settlement with Cal, similar to UCLA.

I wonder if the bit in the press release about BSN Sports means that their apparel deal isn't directly with Nike but rather BSN Sports agreeing to supply them Nike equipment. If so, I wouldn't expect too many custom designs and Cal just going with catalogue uniforms

So for the heck of it I recently googled Houston Baptist, and turns out they changed their name to Houston Christian University last month.  Odd time for a name change.  For now, I guess they're using their existing husky logo but without the text.

An updated Husky logo and new wordmark finally came.

Interesting... both KCAL and KCBS' news divisions have been rebranded to KCAL News

    https://www.newscaststudio.com/2023/01/05/kcal-news-cbs-2-news-la-branding/

Perhaps CBS has plans to sell the station in the not too distant future. It helps if people are used to it no longer being KCBS. i'm sure it will stay a CBS affiliate, but it would be weird for KCBS to be named for someone who no longer owns it

I do think Nashville’s wider cultural relevancy is a much more recent phenomenon — whether that’s fair is separate — but also, there is something to be said about the Titans’ bizarre, slow-walked move, with the temporary clinging to Oilers and the college stadium stops including Memphis — that sorta stunted their roots, at least from the outside. Personally I still don’t think of them as Nashville the way I might with the Predators or even the soccer team.

Attendance was so bad in Houston after the team announced their plans to move to Nashville that they figured playing in Memphis and Vanderbilt Stadium was a better option than 2 more lame duck seasons in Houston.

I think by the team going for alliteration and being named Tennessee makes it a little harder for neutral football viewers to associate the team with Nashville.

I also feel Nashville's national relevancy is certainly more of a recent trend. Back when the Oilers moved there all I knew about it was thats the place where country music is made and since I didn't like country music AND they stole my NFL team I really disliked Nashville.

Yes, play dress up as a franchise they have no connection to outside of location.

But location matters considering its what links you to the same fan base of that previous franchise.

The Texans came to town so soon after the Oilers left that there was always going to be a comparison and a yearning to link to them. The Texans ownership did their best to pretend the Oilers never existed and tried to create a clean slate. If they would have gotten over the hump and made it to the super bowl once in the past 21 seasons, the identity would be thought of fondly and surpassed any positive association Houstonians have of the Oilers. Instead it's been 21 years of bad to mediocre football with 2 really good seasons hence why they are probably looking at revamping the look to re-spark interest and kick off a new era.

Coincidently, this came out the same day that the Texans sent a survey to season ticket holders asking their opinion  on potential new uniform ideas.

They asked fans to check which ideas they liked.

Colors: oiler blue, dark blue, black, red, battle red

Lettering: traditional (green bay) or unique (rams)

    Uniform design: traditional or unique
