  1. I think the Texans are a prime candidate for the triple-mismatch (i.e. different color helmet, jersey, & pants). They could do the red helmet, navy jersey, & white pants at home, and do the white jersey with navy pants on the road. They could even continue the triple-mismatch with the alternate by switching to the navy helmet with the red jersey & white pants.

One thing I just noticed. That’s the old D Snake logo. Not sure I like that part of it, as the updated one from 07 is better imo.

The old one is more in keeping with the 1998 A logo, in that Factory Pomo-adjacent style. I wouldn’t say it’s the best “D-snake,” but it’s the one that fits the set.

I honestly prefer the old "D-snake" logo entirely, the 2007-2017 one's head is too big and there are too many curved lines, which as @SFGiants58 said, doesn't mesh as well with the 'A' logo.

I think of the 4 the all red DSnake is the least necessary, and probably the worst one too. Can easily just wear the black/red D one or the red A hat with the red jersey.

I immediately saw this and thought that that red A hat would be the first to completely disappear (see the orange Astros hat).

The only reason I'd drop the all-black hat is that I really prefer the Diamondbacks to be a red-heavy team. I think having the all-red hat is a good addition, but I like the black-brimmed hat too.

I like it a lot! I’m SO happy the D Snake is back. I get some of the dislike for it, but it’s got historical precedent for the Diamondbacks. This may be my new favorite D Backs hat.

I’d never liked the D-snake logo, but this hat honestly looks really nice. I’d just drop the all black ‘A’ cap at this point to be honest.

  4. Wow! I’m not a fan of the headspoon (although I don't think it looks quite as thin as I had feared), but everything else is an upgrade. The biggest relief is that "D-Backs" is no longer a part of the set, hopefully for good.

Although I've personally started to sour on the turquoise, as oppposed to sand, I am glad they finally settled on one color scheme, even if it's maybe not the one I would've chosen. On the positive side, it makes the City Connect stand out as more unique, while still keeping sand in the set to a degree.

Making the home uniform off-white was a great move. I also appreciate the heavier emphasis on sedona red, as the previous set was too black-heavy (adding sedona red caps to the road jersey was a huge upgrade). I think the full "Diamondbacks" looks a little too condensed for my liking, but it's honestly not as bad as I would've expected.

I’m honestly halfway convinced the team saw my concept for them & ran with it, but I’m not complaining:

I really hope the A's keep their current unis but just change the road script to reflect their new city. I also wonder if any design work was done on an Oakland City Connect uniform, which at this point we'll likely never get to see.

I'd be disappointed if they don't switch to kelly green full-time. I also wouldn't mind seeing some  sort of striping on the uniforms.

Wow, they absolutely crushed this. Fun word play, character-based, and great looking uniforms.

This is immediately one of the best identities in MiLB, if not the best. I love everything that has to do with the Roman striping and the columns, especially the "R" logo. Tying it in with emperor penguins is simply perfect for a Minor League identity. The color scheme is also very Georgia and very Roman at the same time. 10/10.

  7. Potential hot take incoming:

I’m not sure if people would consider this “monochrome,” but if so, I think this is a much better way to go about it:

    zReB6De.jpg

Teal socks would throw off the balance completely, but this looks just fine as an occasional combo. If the jersey matches the pants, then the helmet should match the socks and (ideally) be a different color. Buffalo pulled this off on Monday with white/blue/blue/white, & I could see the Ravens, for example, doing something similar with black/purple/purple/black.

To tie this point in with the Texans news, I actually really like that look, but it would be even better with red socks to match the helmet.

  8. I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned yet, but Uni-Watch did a piece on the new Nike template, giving us our first look at an actual jersey.

    wlx6hXb.jpg

This looks to confirm that the collar insert is still there, which makes me glad I got my Twins authentic jerseys this year.

Overall, I think it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some elements of the new replicas are an upgrade over the old ones, as I never liked the “stripes” effect that the material of the old Majestic replicas gave. I also like the stitched Nike swoosh and hope the new replicas will include elements such as patches & front numbers.

The sleeve stripe style on the old template was better though, in my opinion:

  9. The first time we saw a peak at Nike’s MLB template was with the Royals during Spring Training 2021:

    blBDOSk.jpg

You can see the placket is closer to the neck, and there are inserts at the collar & at the end of the sleeves.

Later that year, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders appeared to use the same template:

    D2LNALC.jpg

    Both jerseys had perforated numbers:

    SIurRkQ.jpg

    HMfU2KJ.jpg

Then, the template was used for this past summer’s All-Star Game:

    ZhBMIqd.jpg

It’s unclear whether next year’s template will keep the collar and sleeve inserts, as the Rangers’ jersey doesn’t seem to, although that is a replica.

Well, because COLOR VS COLOR is never ever necessary.

A lot of things about uniforms aren’t really necessary, all you need is contrasting colors and numbers on the jersey. Anything beyond that is just flair, but that’s what interests us here.

(I say that as someone who would probably prefer the Falcons wear white against the Oilers throwbacks).

I’d just have a hard time saying we shouldn’t do this simply because it isn’t necessary:

    Tc1rySg.jpg

Of course, not every color v. color matchup is this glorious (far from it), but the overall point still stands.

  11. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I'm starting to think the Phillies might be in a Tampa Bay Bucs situation where their main identity and their throwback ought to coexist, rather than going strictly with one or the other.

I'd always felt the Phillies should go back to the maroon & powder blue, but the more I see their red pinstriped uniform in Citizens Bank Park, the less I can imagine them without it. I'd probably prefer maroon when it comes to the away & alternate jerseys, but the red candy cane pinstripes just feel right for them.

Maybe it's due to the success they've had with them in the late 2000's as well as the past couple years that's affecting my opinion, I don't know. But keeping red as the primary while reserving maroon for a throwback might be the way to go moving forward.

From a distance, I didn’t think these uniforms looked that bad. It had a few elements that I prefer to the current ones:

    —The brighter red

—Red socks at home, pewter socks on the road

    —Incorporation of the creamsicle orange

The problems lie in the details. The atrocious numbers, shoulder yokes, asymmetrical sleeves…weird striping…oversized logo…

If they used that red/orange and the original 1997 pewter, they’d have a great looking set. We appreciate the current getup now because it’s not the bonkers 2014 look, but today it just looks horribly boring. Drab pewter, WAH constantly, more black than red. Snooze.

I agree with this in the sense that the elements you mentioned (the brighter red, the sock choices, and creamsicle orange) worked well for that set. I honestly didn't even mind the shoulder yokes or the unconventional striping.

However, ultimately I disagree that implementing those elements would work better with the traditional set. In my concepts, I've attempted incorporating the creamsicle orange in place of the regular orange, but with the way the numbers are styled, it doesn't work as well. The creamsicle orange is too bright, and it presents opposite problems on the home & away jerseys: on the red jersey, the orange blends too much with the white of the numbers, and on the white jersey, the bright orange stands out too much from the red. The regular orange works better for what the traditoinal set is doing. To illustrate:

    4fckAOf.png

Opinions are subjective, so I respect if you prefer the bright colors of the right, but I personally prefer what they currently have on the left.

Similarly, I think the darker red and the black socks work better with the traditonal set, as it contributes to the dark, dreary look which I appreciate.

In essence, although the 2014 set tried doing some things that combined the two previous identities up to that point, I think it's best to keep them separate, but both still prominent in their own way, like the team is currently doing.

  13. I thought the Bucs’ creamsicles looked absolutely gorgeous in action. Paired up against the Lions finally wearing silver pants, it’s gotta be my matchup of the year, by virtue of its uniqueness.WpTcYyB.jpg

I think keeping it reserved to one game a year is perfect, it keeps it special (having the designated “creamsicle game” every year) while still keeping it relevant to the brand. I don’t think the creamsicle would work full-time because the away jersey simply isn’t as endearing as the home.

    10 hours ago, throwuascenario said:

I'd love to see the Bucs in the creamsicles full time, only replacing the helmet logo with a recolored version of the 1997 logo. I don't see why that couldn't work. I love that color scheme, but the winking logo is godawful and 50 years outdated. Their current away jerseys are really just a black outline and sleeve design from being the old away jerseys. So they can mostly keep those as-is, the black outline really helps out the bright colors on white IMO. Just change the helmet and pants and you're good.

I disagree with this because the creamsicles and the modern set are trying to do completely different things, so taking the ‘97 logo out of its proper context within the rest of the brand doesn’t really work.

The creamsicle set is bright, fun, and kind of kitschy, which is why it was derided in its time but also why it’s beloved with the lens of nostalgia. On the other hand, the post-1997 brand is meant to be dark, menacing, and intimidating, a seemingly deliberate course correction from the creamsicle look.

This is why any attempts to combine the two, whether by bringing the newer logos in or adding black/pewter to the creamsicles, don’t work in my opinion, because the two brands are so diametrically opposed. I think a throwback game still works though, precisely because of the contrast. The creamsicle is a refreshing change of pace from the Bucs’ usual dark and moody set.

    6 hours ago, SFGiants58 said:

Just using the Virginia Tech shades of orange and maroon would be enough to help the creamsicle look out.

I also disagree with this, because I think the bright colors of the creamsicle are precisely what make it work. Darkening both colors would make the set completely lose its appeal to me.

It’s probably due to the new template. Notice how the perforations in the back go all the way down on the old template, but there are two distinct “sections” on the new one.

  15. I’ve honestly always really liked white/white/color combos in football. I agree that they’re best with white socks though (an exception being the Chargers, their powder blue works), which is one thing I’ve never liked about when the Dolphins go with aqua pants. If they paired it with white socks, it would look so much better.

For the Colts in particular, I think blue pants look aesthetically fine, but would just feel odd since they always tend to go all-white.

@MJD7 I would love (with your permission of course) to replicate these for OOTP.  Any chance you have some higher res images of the sleeve logos for these jerseys?  Absolutely amazing work. 😀

Thank you! It would be a lot for me to send you every single one, but send me a message with some specific ones you’d like & I’ll see if I can make it work.

  17. I think the Rays have so many different directions they could go in, they just need to commit to one. They could go:

    • Full-time gradient, maybe paired with the deep purple on the numbers instead of black
    • Back to forest green & maybe pair it with columbia blue
    • Increase emphasis on columbia blue & yellow, preferably with new logos & wordmarks

They’re really due for a brand refresh, hopefully coinciding with their new stadium at the latest. Their Times New Roman-esque font has look dated ever since it debuted (their previous wordmarks weren’t much better, either, I think the lowercase “fauxback” wordmark is the best they’ve had).

No matter which jersey they choose to wear on the road, they both say “Oakland,” so there’s no real avoiding that. It maybe explains why they haven’t worn the green jersey at home much lately, but not on the road.

I’m probably not the only one, but I think the A’s should go to kelly green full-time if/when they go to Vegas.

Y'all really gotta get over the sock thing. This is now 2023. We're not going back to the days of proper socks or any with stripes on them. While it sucks, those days are over. Move on.

I wonder how people would feel about the NFL going the college route & not requiring knee-high socks?

I think I’d probably prefer that over the white pants & white leggings look that more & more teams have been trotting out (I think it looks fine with complete white-out looks like the Cardinals, but when the Vikings or Eagles pair it with a dark helmet & jersey, it looks terrible).

I think your project unintentionally proved why the Brewers number font is great. Look how many classic designs it looks good paired next to.

Not sure I can pick a favorite in this series. Suffice to say this has been one of my favorite all time series on the CCSLC.

I actually only used it with 3 designs [Brewers (Braves), Cardinals, & Brewers (Cardinals)], but looking back I probably could’ve included it on more Milwaukee designs. Its proximity to regular block makes it work well with classic designs.

Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
