completely agree with this rule, which is why I've always disliked when teams use solid white socks to break up mono looks like these:

    spacer.png

Without any stripes on white socks, it just makes the uniform feel incomplete, especially when everyone on the team is wearing them

At that point, might as well commit to the mono look, the bland white sock taking up 50% of the legs doesn't do much to help.

This one works better because of the stripes

My general rule of thumb is that if the jersey matches the pants, the helmet should match the socks, whether that results in a completely monotone combo or not. That's part of why certain monochrome combos like the Seahawks work for me, while a number of the Color Rush sets, which often were a different color from the helmet but were one color from the neck down, didn't.

It's also why I think that Bills set actually works, as @fouhy12 said, the socks help balance out the helmet. It'd be better with stripes on the socks, though.

That Jets combo isn't bad, as there's plenty of white on the jersey for the socks to balance out with, and a white facemask would be even better. Green socks would probably work just as well with this set though.

As for the Bears, if they go all-navy, I prefer their worn-once Color Rush combo:

Gridiron Uniform Database has the Cardinals in all white uniforms at home against the 49ers this Sunday if this is true  they are wearing white at home for the 1st time since 2009 against the Texans

The team confirmed as much, as you can see in @Pigskin12's post on the previous page:

This team has gotta be trolling us at this point.

This is now the third incorrect road jersey the 49ers announced at the beginning of the season. They’ll have worn red for three road games.

The reason it needs contrasting socks is because the pants color should never match the socks color. No exceptions.

I think that’s a good general rule of thumb, but I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say there aren’t any exceptions to it. I personally like certain monochrome combos that are either quite dark, like the Seahawks or Bears all-navy, or combos that are all-white, such as the Dolphins or Bills (I generally prefer the contrasting pants for both of those teams, but I still don’t mind the all-white).

I’m also genuinely curious whether this uniform is part of that rule for you, or if it gets an exception because of the stripes on the socks:

Vikings in white on white with purple socks looks good because it was the primary road look for decades and decades. The purple pants are decent (again, I'm not thrilled about the fact that they're always paired with purple socks), but white on white with purple socks is their true road look.

If the Vikings want to wear purple pants, they should wear them with striped white socks that match the sleeve striping.

As a lifelong Vikings fan, I actually prefer the purple pants as the primary road combo. I do agree though that pairing the purple pants with purple socks is less than ideal. My slight disagreement is that I don’t think the white socks necessarily need to be striped in order for them to be a superior option to purple socks.

The Bengals all-black is better with orange socks, but they are one of the few teams that can wear all black and it looks good because the helmet offers a nice balance.

All-black only looks good with teams that have black in their primary color scheme, and only when those teams wear contrasting colored socks (like the Bengals' orange socks or the Panthers' blue socks)

I actually prefer the black socks with the black jersey for the Bengals, as the orange socks are the only part of the uniform that’s solid orange, everything else has stripes, which kind of bugs me. It makes the socks stand out too much in my eyes. I only like the orange socks when they’re paired with the orange jersey.

I guess I disagree with the premise that all-black needs contrasting socks, as I seem to be in the minority for liking the Falcons’ all-black combo.

Not quite the same thing, but the Ravens and Jaguars have also broken up the all-black look in the past by wearing colored pants, which looked really good:

These both look great though (as do the Ravens’ purple pants on the road).

  4. The Titans light blue pants are their best away combo, but they really chose one of the worst possible games to wear them against the Dolphins' aqua.

Also, I haven't watched a game of theirs in a while, but the two-tone silver sword really is so bad. They really need to change uniforms yesterday. That's not to mention that the association between swords and Greek Titans seems a bit forced to say the least.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, their main set is underrated. I'd be more than happy if they returned to the throwbacks, but the current shade of aqua, the number font, and the logo are all pretty nice.

I'll add on that I'd remove the chest patch and the gradient. I'm not in love with that number font but I can live with it if it's not in gradient.

I can live with the chest patch and the gradient, personally. What I don't like about the numbers (and the sleeve design) is that shiny, "Fruit Roll-Up" texture they have, I'd get rid of that. A lot of Adidas uniforms tend to have a similar shiny texture, and it just looks cheap to me.

It's interesting how, in the course of a few posts on this topic, no one has advocated for a direct return to the 70s-90s look (and @MJD7 expressly refuted it), and yet the combination of posts illustrates the slippery slope right back to the throwbacks in question. "I would keep the modern look, but go with athletic gold and keep the old horn." "Yeah, and I'd also get rid of the patches and gradients." We're down to discussing the number font at this point, and that's the critique that's also leveled at the Steelers whose uniforms are otherwise essentially unchanged since the late 60s. It's like, collectively, it's not enough until the uniform just is the throwback.

This isn't a criticisms of anyone expressing their opinions, to be clear. I just find it interesting that there's always a tweak or two to make, and in many cases these proposed tweaks would end up pushing a look back toward a throwback/older look.

I definitely understand this. Allow me to clarify my stance by saying some things I expressly don't love about the throwback:

    • Others may disagree, but I'm honestly not big on block numbers beyond a few classic teams such as the Packers, Raiders, and Chiefs. I think the number font itself is an improvement with the modern Rams set.
    • I don't like the navy helmet, royal jersey mismatch. The finish on the new helmet looks great, a definite upgrade over the navy in my book.
    • The "ram horn" sleeve stripe clearly isn't adaptable to modern jersey templates. The modern sleeve "loop" is a nice adaptation, although I'd get rid of the "divide" in the middle of it.
    • I honestly like the modern pants stripe more than the throwback one. It's a more unique stripe design, but still fits witin the context of the set.

However, all of these upgrades are negated by the highlighter yellow and the baffling choice to put a divide in the horn.

These two photos illustrate why the Rams’ rebrand is such a disappointment, even before inspecting the finer details. The athletic gold really makes a world of difference.

I’m not even someone who’d advocate for the Rams to just go back to the throwbacks & call it a day; if they kept this modern set, but just went back to athletic gold & the old horn, I’d be largely happy with it. That highlighter yellow & the broken horn are just each such eyesores.

Iowa's defense is ranked 9th in FBS in yards per game allowed. Louisville is 35th.

According to the NCAA website, you actually did Iowa a disservice, as from what I can tell they are ranked 5th. However, Louisville is 16th. Maybe these results are after the conference championship games, I’m not sure.

By that same measurement though, FSU’s defense is ranked 14th, ahead of Alabama (18th), Texas (23rd), and way ahead of Washington (90th).

Could that same argument not be used as justification for FSU’s strong defense to be put in, as well?

And even this is besides the main point that, if you are undefeated, I don’t see how you aren’t given even a chance to compete for the championship.

And yes, all FSU had to do was look competent in either of their two games without Travis instead of fielding the second worst offense in the country.  But Rodemaker was terrible against Florida so I don’t know why anybody thinks he would’ve fared better against Louisville.

FSU's offense had more yards in their conference championship game, with their 3rd-string quarterback, than Michigan did in theirs with their starter. Louisville is also ranked higher than Iowa.

Doubt the Twins will debut a new Cash Grab Connect in 2024, given that they just introduced one in 2023.

If you're referring to the "Twin Cities" alternate, that is not their City Connect, it's just part of their regular rotation. The article linked says that the team plans to have a City Connect for 2024.

All this talk about Florida State has me thinking... they need to be mad at Georgia for losing the SEC Championship Game.

If it wasn't for the Bulldogs losing, they're more then likely in the playoff as you would have four unbeaten teams and a one loss Texas team as Big 12 Champion. Guess who gets hosed there?

This would make sense at first glance, but I'm honestly still halfway convinced they would have still jumped Texas ahead of FSU, even though Texas' win vs. Alabama would be slightly less important. What really would have helped was if Alabama didn't convert their miraculous 4th-&-31 against Auburn, as there wouldn't have been a 5th team that had any "realistic" qualms with being left out.

    19 hours ago, Seadragon76 said:

So, for all the talk of Florida State boycotting the game and stuff... I say nay. Go out there and beat the Bulldogs senseless. Make an example out of them and let the committee know that they screwed up.

Although I wouldn't endorse boycotting the game, I will say, playing Georgia still looks like a lose-lose for them. If they beat Georgia, people will say that it's because Georgia didn't care and that a lot of their best players sat out because of the NFL draft. If they lose, it only confirms people's previously held beliefs of SEC superiority.

It does make me wonder what would happen if FSU beats Georgia, remaining undefeated at 14-0, while Texas or Alabama wins the title with one loss, leaving FSU as the only undefeated team.

Here’s an idea:  no more national champions. You get conference titles and bowls as reward for winning a conference. That’s it.

Every method for finding a national champion is bafflingly stupid and we are better off without them.

Although I'd probably be fine with that on a personal level, I don't think it'd be realistic. Especially from a cynical point-of-view, it'd be leaving millions of dollars on the table by not having the best teams from each conference play each other.

I think there's a way to make it work, so long as it's grounded by objective criteria such as a conference championship, but obviously the current system does not really fit that bill.

The playoff should be the Champions League where all the conference champions go, no at large bids, and I don't see why that would be stupid. No good reason you should be able to win the National Championship if you couldn't win your smaller conference championship. I'm an OSU fan, they shouldn't have been in the playoff a year ago and I'm sort of glad they didn't make it this year. The only reason they don't do it that way is because they want to game the matchups to best fit their TV event. People would whine that one loss Georgia is better than Florida State or whoever wins the AAC and they're probably correct, but to them I say tough boogers shoulda beat Alabama.

Exactly. The ideal for me would be to have 4 or 8 conferences total, and have each conference champion play each other in the playoff. It preserves (and even probably amplifies) the importance of the conference championship games while still having the grand playoff at the end of the year where the best teams play each other. The main difference is that it'd be decided on the field, objectively, instead of in a secret room by a random committee.
