  2. Some companies not entirely gone but less of a presence than before.

Texaco used to be a nationwide gas chain, but since their 2001 merger with Chevron they are only found in the South and a few Western States because Shell converted most of their gas stations to the Shell name.

    spacer.png

K-mart, Sears, JCPenney as mentioned in previous pages of the thread.

    I second Quiznos. @Fitzy0220

Long John Silver's is also in decline.

Mishkin right? Whenever he screams I imagine his crewmates have to get headphones otherwise they would go deaf

The past 10 years are a godsend for things like this

-Every March Madness game on TV, especially when dealing with local affiliates being locked into one game. It was no big deal my freshman year in Syracuse when they stuck to Syracuse and Cornell's cinderella run, but here in the NYC market you can get stuck with any one of St. John's, Seton Hall, the bunch of low-major NYC schools, and pretty much any school within the quadrant of Rider-Marist-Fairfield-Stony Brook. March Madness on Demand was fine, but it's so much better once Turner joined the fray

-NFL RedZone becoming the antidote to having just 3 games on TV, which here in the NYC market means "Jets, Giants, and probably the 4:25 Fox Cowboys game". I know there's NFL Sunday Ticket but the NFL's insistence on having everything exclusive from over the top packages to video games cancels that out, not to mention how much more expensive it is. Plus for as much as they promote it as a fantasy football channel that's geared to offense, it's really more of being the TV remote for you and shows you pretty much everything. Best sports TV invention since the scorebug (in before someone says in the other thread they miss watching games without scorebugs)

-Every Stanley Cup Playoff game on TV without having on NHL Center Ice (which FWIW I am a 17 year subscriber of, but that obviously doesn't apply to everyone). Yes, NBC can get ridiculous with channel selection, but having every game available on national TV one way or another is a nice thing to have that's surprisingly a recent development.

    Yes, Yes and Yes!

  8. As a response to this thread, here we list what we do not miss from the old days of sports.

Some off the top of my head:

I DON'T miss the days where all the March Madness games were on CBS and thus regional. Ever since CBS teamed up with Turner (TNT, TBS and TruTV), every single game can be seen on TV.

I DON'T miss the days before the designated hitter.

I DON'T miss the previous format of the Home Run Derby, the new time limit system has vastly improved the event.

I DON'T miss the pass interference instant replay rule which only existed because of the backlash of the non-PI call in the 2018 NFC title game. No rule is going to mask trash refereeing which has plagued the NFL for years.

When it eventually gets phased out, I WON'T miss the one helmet rule, and we can finally see alternate helmets used again, which means more throwback jerseys.

I have the first logo ready to share: The Milwaukee Does of the WNBA! While it is pretty blatantly derivative and shares intentional features to the Bucks logo, part of the idea is to extend their current branding. I tried to soften some of the angles in the deer to give it a less aggressive feel, and added some more of the blue to help differentiate it from their NBA counterparts. Enjoy!

American Sports: Jets, Giants, Yankees, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Red Bull NY, Cosmos, NYCFC: Local teams.

College Football: Miami Hurricanes: Saw the 2001 team dominate and was hooked, also helps that a lot of my favorite players like Ed Reed, Jonathan Vilma, Willis McGahee, Jeremy Shockey etc. were on that team.

College Basketball: Connecticut Huskies and North Carolina Tar Heels: Got into UConn before the 2004 Tourney because of Emeka and UNC before the 2005 Tourney because they were the ultimate nemesis of the Dukies (never liked the Dook) and they use the beautiful light blue.

English soccer: Manchester United: Many reasons, namely Sir Alex, Rooney, Old Trafford (would love to go to a game someday)

    Spanish soccer: Real Madrid: Ronaldo.

    French soccer: Paris Saint-Germain: Ibra.

German soccer: Bayern Munich: Always been fascinated about Bavaria and Munich (the region and city they play in, hence their name), the logo and uniforms are great.

Italian soccer: AC Milan: Went to their game vs Chelsea @ Metlife and though they lost, they won me over.

Scottish soccer: Rangers FC: I don't know why, but I just see them as a cool team. Also have the cutest nicknames... Teddy Bears, Bluenose, and their fans jump around (i.e. Do the Bouncy) just like UNC.

Mexican soccer: Club America: I live in "America" (USA! USA!), they include North and South America on their crest, which makes us kind of feel included. Though Chicarito played at Chivas, I was pretty much destined to be an Americanista. They actually embrace the hatred non-Americanistas give them, their slogan "Ódiame Más!" means "Hate me more!"

Australian Rules Football: I'm a newbie to the sport, but Collingwood won my heart. Almost became a Geelong fan, but Magpie mascot >>>> Generic cat mascot.

An update on my favorite teams: A strikethrough on the teams in the quoted post are teams I stopped cheering for or only flirted with at the time (because of said reason on the quoted post). Also I am not as passionate about my favorite college sports teams as much as I used to but still generally cheer for those teams.

I only root for the Knicks now, did not know it at the time but my interest in the Nets was going south as they went east to Brooklyn. It is not the same as when they were here in New Jersey. Same reason why I stuck with the Red Bulls, although the NY Rangers I became a fan in the 2005-06 season.

To replace Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Glasgow Rangers (all 4 were in the flirt category on the 2nd sentence) were their respective rivals, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and Celtic. Atleti, Dortmund and Celtic: their their more passionate fans won me over when I found out more about those teams. Juventus I always liked them as well and still actually have a soft spot for Milan.

  11. Surprised at how recent a lot of stuff is listed here (I mean late 2000s and 2010s) I expected a lot more 70s and 80s!

Anyways here is more of mine:

NBA on NBC (did you know Jim Fagan who says "This is the NBA on NBC" sadly passed away?

The old FSN college football theme (If you were a Big 12 and Pac-10 fan you are probably familiar with it)

ABC Sports (Espn on ABC is lame I want to feel like ABC is broadcasting it not ESPN)

New Jersey Nets of the Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin days

MLB on Fox (games on Saturday afternoons and some evening games).

i know they still have some here and there every so often but still miss them anyway.

also Monday Night Football on ABC.

I miss MLB on FOX doubleheaders and a full length pregame show (which was also preceded by the last days of TWIB), they got rid of the pregame show because of the Great Recession and they wanted to be damn near focused 100% on NFL coverage

    Changes

    • Expansion Teams: Buffalo Bisons, Montreal Expos, Orlando Tropics, Philadelphia Keystones, Washington Senators, Des Moines Dynamite, Indianapolis Speed, Memphis River Boats, New Orleans Canes, St. Louis Browns, Albuquerque Isotopes, Los Angeles Stars, Omaha Express, Portland Beavers, Salt Lake Bees, San Antonio Fiesta, Brooklyn Avengers, Charlotte Knights, Durham Bulls, Hartford Captains, Virginia Colonials (Richmond, VA), Columbus Clippers, Louisville Slugs, Nashville Sounds, Oklahoma City Drillers, Tallahassee Sharks, Austin Diablos, Boise Moose, Las Vegas Aviators, Sacramento River Cats.
    • Team Relocations: Boston Blues expansion team to Hartford, because the Red Sox were still too popular and the Blues had a lousy 12 years before moving to Hartford to keep an NL presence in New England.
    • Switching Divisions: Houston Astros go back to the NL. They are placed in the NL West.
    • Team Color Changes: Boston Red Sox (add "Monster Green", which is the color of and named after.. you guessed it, a certain wall in left field in Fenway Park), New York Yankees (add Gold and Black (!!!!!) into their Midnight Blue (which is slightly brightened) and Silver color scheme, and add Red as an accent color on their alternates, to the shock of the baseball world)*, Tampa Bay Rays (1998-2007 Black, 1998-2000 Purple, 2001-2007 Green, 2008-present Powder Blue and Yellow) Chicago White Sox (bring back red), Oakland Athletics (Kelly Green replaces Hunter Green), Miami Marlins (Black and Teal of the Florida era is combined with Pink, Yellow and Blue), Philadelphia Phillies (back to Maroon), Arizona Diamondbacks (current Red and Black is combined with Purple and Teal of the World Series Diamondbacks), San Diego Padres (slightly brighten the Brown and add Orange as an accent color).
    • 12 games against division rivals, 3 games against intraleague opponents, 2 games against an interleague division rotated between 3 years + 2 games against a fixed interleague opponent (Yankees-Mets, Red Sox-Captains, Phillies-Keystones etc.) = 190 games.
    • 20 playoff teams, bottom 4 play in a best of 1 Play-In Round (lowest seed to advance plays #1 in the 1st Round, highest seed plays #2. Winner of the 1st Round goes to the Division Series, then Championship Series and then World Series.) Division Series stays best of 5, the rest are best of 7 as usual.
    • CBS and CBSSN shows a lions share of the National TV games as well as the All-Star Game and the World Series in response to missing out on getting back the NBA and losing a lot of AFC games to ABC. FOX still shows Saturday games, as well as up to 6 games every week on FS1 and FS2.

*Basically the new Yankees owner (who purchased the team from the Steinbrenner Family in 2035) found an opportunity to make more money by selling black hats, and midnight blue hats with the gold NY, and white, pinstriped hats. He would also purchase West Ham United (and thus end their ties with Manchester City) and make them a powerhouse.

  14. Before I do the New TrueYankee26 Series: MLB post.. a sneak preview of a new Collegiate Athletic Association - The North American University Athletics Association (NAUAA - pronounced "Naw-aah").

Nice work but where did Columbus move to? I would give them Orlando’s spot, because you can’t put them in a separate conference from Florida and Tampa Bay.

Also that is a monstrosity of a league but that’s why they call this the “Pointless Realignment Outpost.” I would split the conferences into two 7-team divisions.

As I was typing I realized you have Florida in the Atlantic AND the Metro so I think you meant to put Columbus in the Metro.

I would love for the Hurricanes to move to Charlotte to stick it to Raleigh because it looks like they are dumping the Checkers for the Chicago Wolves, I guess money talks. (but hope it will not be but for a year). I will remain a Canes fan though, can’t really blame the players for it. Doubt Raleigh and Charlotte would both have teams but what a rivalry that would be.

Oh man I knew I forgot someone, I will fix that! You are correct I meant to put Columbus in the Metro.

Usually my pointless realignments are way into the future of sports (One of them was 80 years from now, this one isn't but still pretty far) that's why it is a monstrosity haha.

You just gave me a great idea! I will say The "Charlotte Checkers" are today's Carolina Hurricanes, that team moved to Charlotte, and the new "Raleigh Hurricanes" are an expansion team that moved from Orlando, and Orlando shortly gets granted another expansion.

    • Top 6 teams from each conference play in the playoffs, top 2 teams get a bye, while the bottom 4 teams face each other in a best of 5 "Stanley Cup Wild Card" round. The lowest seed to advance faces the #1 team, highest to advance faces the #2 team in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and all series are best of 7 from here. In the "Stanley Cup Series" The winners of the Atlantic and Metropolitan and the winners of the Central and Pacific face each other. The winner of those face each other in the Stanley Cup Final.
    • American TV: FOX and CBS have the rights to the Central and Pacific Conferences. In odd years, FOX has the Central part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and CBS has the Pacific part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and vice versa in the even years. NBC and ABC have the rights to the Atlantic and Metropolitan Conferences. In 4, NBC has the Atlantic part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and ABC  has the Metropolitan part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and vice versa in the even years.
    • Canadian TV: English rights go to Sportsnet, TSN and CBC. French rights go to RDS, TVA, and Ici Radio-Canada Télé.
    • The teams with a previous incarnation, like the new Winnipeg Jets, do not get their old history back which means the Avalanche keep the old Nordiques history, New Jersey Devils keep the old Scouts history etc.
