  1. Might have been the Arena Football League, or at least one of their owners/investors. I remember shortly before AFL 1.0 went bankrupt and shut down at the end of the 2000's there was talk of them wanting to form an AFL Europe and talking to the NFL about the rights for those names/logos to do it.
  2. I hope the revamped Oakland is well liked. I'm going to go ahead and share out the next planned team, the Tampa Bay Bandits! I made a point to familiarize myself with the prior helmet/uniform design given some of the feedback I've received and kept the gray shell color, but I made a change regarding the center stripe and facemask as the old helmet was basically Ohio State's helmet with a logo based on the pics I found. The red facemask and the new smaller graphic above the helmet help to separate this helmet. The red facemask also reflects the red bandana in the new logo. The center graphic is taken from the highlights on the new logo's hat, but using the black-white-red scheme of the old helmet's center stripe. Regarding the logo itself, I struggled finding a way to modernize and make a full-body horse/rider logo appealing without being too detailed, so I chose to focus on the rider's head for this new logo. I hope this one is enjoyed, I really made a point to try and better account for the past design without just copying them onto a modern looking helmet.
  3. That's a fair criticism. Since I wasn't doing uniforms I underestimated the importance of researching them, and the logos I've been largely grabbing from this site's database. My initial goal was more or less updating these classic logos and then making a helmet I thought would look good with it, and took for granted that colors, etc that matter to teams' identities would all be in the logos. I've been researching more with the recent designs and revisions now, but a lot of these first 8 were started/completed before I began this thread in the forum so they were all done or in various stages of development before getting any feedback so that lesson isn't being reflected in some of these.
  4. With the missing color from the team's set pointed out I did a quick touch up and redesign on the Oakland Invaders. I added the yellow into the logo; frankly I just think a primary color should be in a team's logo. It is now a highlight color on the lightning bolt and filling in the O behind the hand and bolt. I considered keeping the helmet black with the new variation, but with the yellow inside the O it looked more natural for it to be outside the logo on the helmet as well. While I liked the contrast of the white bolt on the darker helmet, the yellow background does make the logo quite stand out. Hope you all like this, I still like the last version but overall I think this may be an improvement. On another note, I decided to keep going with this beyond the first 8 teams, so there will be at least four more teams coming after Tampa Bay and Washington. Those are Arizona, Birmingham, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh, with potentially more if inspiration and motivation keep up. I do also have revisions to New Jersey and Detroit in the pipeline.
  5. Thanks, the more I've sat on it the more I'm happy I redid the Generals logo. For the Invaders it was kind of the same situation as the Panthers, basically it wasn't in the logo I was referencing so I just didn't think of it when making the new version.
  6. Not a whole new logo/helmet concept (will probably be later Sunday or Monday for that), but I thought I'd share a new iteration of the New Jersey Generals logo, and I still want to get that right and I'm not feeling like I have yet. It's closer to a redesign rather than just a modernization update, but I kept the basic 5 stars motif, and the script style of font for the Generals. What do you all think? Should I make up a helmet based on this design?
  7. As my previous posted indicated, I may end up returning to the drawing board on the Generals since it doesn't seem to be working; but the feedback is appreciated so I can get better. In the meantime I got a new one up for people to check out. Moving back out west, it's time for the Oakland Invaders! A couple changes of note; I added a lighter shade of blue to help give the design some depth and detail in the hand/wrist, and rather than make it solid blue circle it's now a ring with both shades of blue and a black outline, and the hand was changed to match. The lightning bolt stays pretty similar, but is now going through the ring. The helmet stays pretty simple here; a black shell with the logo on it. The lighter blue helps bring out the logo off the black helmet and the white lightning bolt really pops off it. Hope you all enjoy this one!
  8. Honestly if the idea wasn't already done by others I would have gone the five stars route, but the idea was essentially taken in my mind. Ironic given the accidentally recreating the Chrysler logo thing that happened instead, lol. I really didn't like the pentagons empty and chevrons still at least have a military leadership connection which is the thought behind the revision. I may revisit this again, and honestly probably start from square one if this general concept just isn't working in anyone else's eyes.
  9. That inadvertent similarity bugged me so I decided to revise that right away rather than come back to it. I switched out the old pentagon interiors for chevrons pointing towards the star. The chevrons tie in with the military theme still, and honestly I'm liking the way it looks over the old one. Works better for different sizes and draws the eyes towards the center of the logo and had less repetition in it.
  10. ...can I add a backstory about how Chrysler bought the team and integrated the branding for cross promotion? Lol. That one totally went past me. I'll put this on a list of touch ups to make, I'm sure I can make the pentagons less Chryslerish but still interesting. I figured I'd go through the 8 planned teams, then do any revisions that may come up through the process. Appreciate the comments and feedback!
  11. Hopefully people liked the Express, I'm going to keep going and share the next one. This one takes us across the country to the East Coast to meet the new New Jersey Generals. I've seen a few concepts for this team in the past based on the idea of using the 5 stars to make a pentagon in the middle, so rather than try to top those concepts I decided to invert them, and make a big star inside of 5 pentagons. The pentagons were feeling a bit too empty, so I divided them up, and it ended up looking like thinner stars inside the pentagons also. I added some chevrons on the front and back of the helmet in the way they would be on the shoulders of a uniform.
  12. I feel like either the Panthers or the Bandits would do best with that kind of update myself.
  13. Time for #4 in this series, so we head to the West Coast to meet the updated Los Angeles Express! As you can see, the logo has two significant changes made. I added some additional designs inside the letters to make the graphic appear more interesting and help convey a sense of movement to it, and I tapered off the streaks at the ends so they come to points rather than just end as horizontal lines. Having the inner letter track of the letters blend into the the streaks worked well I think. I kept the helmet simple; with a still fairly simple logo it wouldn't fit if the helmet had a lot going on. No major color changes, just added a little light gray to compliment the white. Hope you all enjoy!
  14. From what I've heard I expect I would have really enjoyed it, but I was born a year or so after the league went under so I missed the chance to watch any of their games as they happened. Duly noted on the color combos, they can definitely be subjective to a degree. Honestly I just really like aquas & yellows/golds together for some reason and Denver needed a 3rd color for the logo I had made to work, so that's how that got there haha. For what it's worth the remaining five teams won't get any major color changes. It was just coincidence that the ones I felt could use it happened to be at the beginning of the alphabet.
  15. Appreciate the feedback. My ignorance showed a bit on the last one; the logo I found for the Panthers (the old one shown in my post) didn't have any champagne color in it which is why I didn't use it. I did a deeper look and found some pics of the helmet incorporating it so I may go back to this one and put it in place of the white in mine; I do like how the color fits with the others.
  16. I'll keep going with the next one on the list, the Detroit (formerly Michigan) Panthers! I felt the logo could be use a little more aggressiveness from the original, so I rounded off that flat bottom which felt off to me, added some black which seemed fitting given that it was based off a black panther, as well as a couple detail lines to help give it more a sense of movement. On the helmet I wanted to convey a similar aggressiveness, so I put a couple of the black/blue accents from the logo onto the helmet as well.
  17. Thanks for the feedback and likes thus far! I'll give some thought to the Chicago logo around the Z. I didn't particularly like how it just stepped up in the original logo, but I may play around with just having it all flush at the end. I got the next one in line today, the Denver Gold! I decided to try something different here as I thought it worked with the Gold name of being a bit more shiny/iridescent and incorporated a gradient into the helmet, as well as give the brand a 3rd color. I realized by the end I had ended up with a somewhat Jaguars-ish in color palette, but I think it works. Obviously I changed the circle from the original logo into a D, which seems like a simple change to give the logo a little more personality as the original just feels really plain and generic to me. I think this gradient works much better than what the Jaguars did in the past; I think the big issue with the Jags was that the gradient was too flat and changed too quickly between colors that were too different. This darker teal and black blend together better, and making it fade from one to the other over a larger area and more diagonally makes it feel more natural I think. I struggled to give it a speckled & extra shiny finish that worked well on the template but in my head at least it would have that as well.
  18. Here we go with the first one, the Chicago blitz! The big change to the logo, aside from a new font is that I added the light blue from the Chicago flag to compliment the red and dark blue, and incorporated the 6-pointed star from their flag into the Z/lightning bolt. I also redesigned that aspect a bit to emphasize the lightning bolt shape a bit more. I thought it worked well by itself so I used it as the helmet logo. The helmet is pretty straight forward but I think it gives them a nice clean look.
  19. These are looking good so far overall! I do like Xavier's; if I were to critique I'd suggest maybe making the X on the front of the jersey taper off at the ends similar to how the one on the pants does to make them match a bit more, but overall it has the creativity seen in Arena Football uniforms but also isn't too busy or complex, it's a good balance of the two. I like the idea of where you went with Murray State. The stars on the front beside the numbers feel a bit busy, so maybe have one on each side of Murray State like you do for the name on the back? It is for an Arena Football team though so busy is kind of the name of the game. I think so far my favorite is Villanova, it's just a really good look in my opinion.
  20. Hello everyone, I decided after the announcement of the USFL possibly coming back next year to put some thoughts into refreshing some of the old USFL team identities. Since the new league is aiming for 8 teams to start, I decided to choose 8 for the first run of the series, but if the demand is there I may expand to more teams. I don't have a good uniform template, so I'll be doing just logos and helmets for this series. These are the teams I'll be doing starting out: Page 1: Chicago Blitz - posted Denver Gold - posted Detroit Panthers (formerly Michigan) - posted Los Angeles Express - posted New Jersey Generals - posted & revised Page 2: Oakland Invaders - posted & revised Tampa Bay Bandits - posted Washington Federals - posted Revised Detroit Panthers - posted Page 3: Revised New Jersey Generals - posted Revised Tampa Bay Bandits - posted Arizona Wranglers - posted Birmingham Stallions - posted Page 4: Jacksonville Bulls - posted Philadelphia Stars - posted Revised Birmingham Stallions - posted Pittsburgh Maulers - posted San Antonio Gunslingers - posted Page 5: Revised Arizona Wranglers - posted Revised Oakland Invaders - posted Coming soon: Project-Wide Helmet Poster Here's my take on a new logo for the league itself to get started. I'll be sharing the teams in alphabetical order so Chicago will start things off with my next post.
  21. I can't vouch for how well it will work on your end since I only have Paint.NET, but I found a plugin for that program that lets me save files in .PSD and on my end it seems to have worked well enough. Hope it works for you. .PSD version of Zenith XR Shadow Helmet Template
  22. If you wanted to break into a couple smaller regions I think (without knowing where teams are all located) you could justifiably separate the Gulf Coast (FL to LA) and Midwest/Ohio Valley (WV, TN, KY, MO) from the existing regions you have. Arguably Texas could be a region by itself.
  23. You may already have this, but this could get you started on the research if you don't. NCAA D1 Non-Football Programs
  24. This could be a really good one. Back when Arena Football was on the rise I had the thought that a step for helping the sport grow would've been to establish a college club league similar to how Ultimate or Rugby teams tend to be organized at colleges. There's a lot of fairly big D-1 schools without football teams (just in my home state there's 3 Division 1 schools without football) but do have decent arenas for basketball and/or hockey available that could theoretically be tapped into for an Arena Football college club league. Adding in D1-AA and D2/3 presents a lot of great possibilities for teams to create.
  25. I was asked to share a template I use for football helmets recently in a different thread, so I decided to post it here. It's one I made myself to use for Paint.NET based on the Xenith Shadow XR helmet. I included a link to the file and a preview image showing all the different layers I built into it turned on. The file won't preview because Google Drive doesn't know how to read the file type (.pdn), but it should download fine. Full disclosure, I do not own the original photo of the helmet that I based this on. I hope this can be of use to people. Xenith Shadow XR Helmet .PDN Template
