Just getting caught up on this thread now. Great work!

The only changes I would make here would be to put the sleeve numbers in between the stripes, and on the alternate I'd have actual stripes across the chest instead of contained in the crest. That logo worked fine as a shoulder patch, but looks awkward on the front of a jersey.

I wonder how long it will be before the Hurricanes fanbase demands they go back to these full-time and change their road whites accordingly.

The reaction I've seen has been either "go back to these", or "aren't these just our regular jerseys?" I get that very few people care about uniforms the way we do, but it baffles me how little people pay attention to detail.

First the Lions and now the Canucks.  Would like to know the reasoning behind dropping the stripes on the pants.  Seems like an unnecessary move.  Did the team need to cut some money on the pants budget so the owner could make some political donations for the upcoming civic election?

He might just be wearing the solid blue pants that they use with their alternates. A few days ago Ekman Larsson was seen at practice in the usual pants.

The reds they just got rid of have some elements that are better (replacing a lot of the silver with black) but its flaws (ghosted warning stripe, generic/weak number font) bring it down. Their perfect jersey would be the 2017-2021 reds but with the NOB/numbers of the originals and a non-ghosted warning stripe.

Meh, the last red jerseys just felt like a watered-down version of the inaugural jerseys. The silver & warning flag pattern were the main things that made the Canes distinct from the other red & black teams. The Sharks rebrand looks just as generic, but at least teal is a unique colour.

Comparing these to other teams who have gone to old jerseys is pointless. The Senators old/new jerseys stink. It's not because they're old. It's just because they're bad. Same with the Coyotes.

    Care to elaborate?

  4. With the new pants, the Sharks run into the same problem that the Oilers & Blackhawks deal with. The pant stripe matches the white jersey perfectly (a white stripe surrounded by black & teal), but it doesn't match the teal jersey striping.

I also agree that the black numbers don't really fit with the teal-heavy look. If they were using black pants it would work better. It feels a bit like when the Avs first switched to blue equipment but still had the black numbers on the away jersey.

Hurricanes posted some phone wallpaper today on their Twitter, and it contained this.

It's the 25th anniversary of the Whalers moving to NC, so I guess it makes sense to bring back the original jerseys as a throwback.

I can just imagine these selling so well that in a few seasons time they end up going back to them. Tom Dunden doesn't seem to like going a year without some sort of uniform change.

No, I see no difference. Those sports companies paid money to the leagues and teams. It's still advertising even if they produce the uniforms and equipment. This is no different in hockey than it is in golf, or tennis or heck just about every sport.

Except that manufacturers want to design products that are aesthetically pleasing. They use minimal, simplistic emblems (swoosh, 3 stripes, etc.), and they customize them to the teams' colour schemes.

Banks/insurance companies/sportsbooks don't care about the aesthetics of uniforms/equipment. They just want to attract as many eyes to their logo as possible. That's why the Habs now have a bright blue & yellow patch on their jerseys.

The action green with blue pants would actually be an awesome, well-balanced look, but the monochrome is obviously just too much. Definitely wouldn't mind seeing the bottom stripe on the Seahawk be changed to green as well.

Yeah, this uniform with white or green socks wouldn't be a bad alternate look:

I'm curious how the navy jersey would look paired with the green pants.

The Maine Mariners (Bruins affiliate) cleaned up their jerseys. Nothing groundbreaking, but the sleeves and hem look better than before.

Definitely an improvement over the last set, but the white jersey needs more green. Before I clicked the link I didn't even notice the green trim. They should have just matched the striping to the green jersey (blue, white, green, white, blue).

I can imagine the Yankees with a big ugly swoosh patch slapped on the front of the most sacred baseball uniform of all-time.  It's not really any different.

You can’t compare a manufacturer’s logo with an ad. That’s like saying Mercedes using their logo as a hood ornament is the same as a realtor slapping their face on the side of their car.

For each official jersey with the RBC logo sold on site at the team's official store, Tricolore Sports, RBC will donate $20 to the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation, which encourages physical activity and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle among underprivileged youth in Quebec.

It's bad enough that they're desecrating one of the most beloved jerseys in sports history, but they're also guilting their fans into buying jerseys with the ad on it. Guess they want a big, fat tax write-off to go with their shiny new ad revenue.

Every single team is a for-profit business. Do you think that they've never done something more unethical than having an ad on the jerseys?

Having ads on the jerseys isn't as unethical as the virtual player slavery and union-busting back in the day.

Short-term profit at the expense of the integrity of your brand isn't always a smart business decision. The Yankees could have made a fortune by selling the naming rights to their new stadium, but they felt it was better for their brand to keep the classic name on the new building.

The short hand points close to 2, the long hand points to 10 or 11. Which would means the time is 1:50-something.

Yeah, someone on reddit pointed out that watches/clocks are often displayed showing the time as 1:50 for aesthetic reasons. It's too bad though because all they needed to do was swap the long & short hands to make the Alfie connection. Otherwise I'm not sure why they felt the need to add hands to the clock when they weren't on the original logo.

EDIT: Hmm, anyone notice the clock hands? Do they mean anything? The original doesn't have that detail (it's just a solid block), but had they moved the hour and minute hand, they could have made the clock read 20:22 in military time. Wasted opportunity!

It looks like it could be set to 11:11 in honour of Alfie, which would make sense as he's going into the Hall of Fame in November. It sounds like they have a big celebration planned for that day.

As for the Sharks, it's an improvement over their most recent set, but just barely IMO. With the removal of orange from the jersey, the orange in the logo looks completely out of place. I would still put the first Edge set & both pre-Edge designs ahead of this. It will be interesting to see what gear they go with. I saw concepts showing various options (both jerseys w/ black equipment, both w/ teal, black only at home w/ teal on the road, black pants at home but w/ teal helmets).

Looks like they're finally using true anniversary years.

With the first season being 92/93, the team used the 10th in 2001/02, 20th in 2011/12, and 25th in 2016/17 (all of which could have been xth seasons instead of x years)...but the team does sell some stuff saying it was established in 1991.

They were awarded the franchise in 1991, but didn't start playing until 1992, which has caused some confusion.

  15. It looks like the Sens have unveiled their 30th anniversary logo.

Pretty minimalist, but I like it. Should make for a nice looking patch on the jerseys (although with the ads who knows where it will be placed). I wonder if it's a hint at the Peace Tower script potentially being used on the reverse retro.

  16. Ooof, how hard would it have been for them to go with one of the dozen or so Scottish-themed nicknames that were suggested in this thread?

Red Leafs is an awful choice. I'm sure there were trademark issues around "Maple Leafs", but Red Leafs sounds like something a person who's never heard of Canada would say when describing the flag.

It's been a bad couple of weeks for Canadian universities rebranding their sports teams.

  17. Yeah, I'm not a fan of this Sharks change at all. Their brand could definitely use a refresh, but this feels like 1 step forward and 2 back. I've never once heard anyone complain about them wearing black equipment. The Flyers wear black pants/helmets/gloves, but no one gets confused about whether or not they're a black or orange team.

They clearly wanted to do some version of their inaugural jersey striping, but without the grey it just looks dull & uninspired. They should have just went the Buffalo route and made some tweaks to their original logo & jerseys.

To be fair, you literally always get "bring it back full-time" comments about throwback alts, so that's to be expected.  😛

As for the Banana Buffaslug...I don't see that every really coming back, due to how wildly unpopular it was and still is. At least the Fisherman, as polarizing as it is, has a notable fanbase. The Slug is...pretty universally not liked.

I don't remember the goat head being beloved at the time. It benefited from being worn by Hasek and being part of a Stanley Cup run. The slug was awful, but it was also worn the last time the Sabres actually had good teams. I'm sure kids who grew up around the President's Trophy/Ryan Miller Vezina season have fond memories of those teams.

We just saw the Ducks bring back the Wild Wing jersey, the Lightning are most likely bringing back the storm uniform, Blasty went from being a joke to being beloved, and somehow the Canucks flying skate has turned into one of the most loved uniforms in the league. The NBA has also brought back a ton of gaudy '90s throwbacks that people hated at the time (Raptors dinosaur, Nets tie-dye, Pistons teal horse).

Nostalgia has always been a driving factor of marketing, but it feels like it's ramped up a lot in the last 5 years or so, even beyond sports. Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man movies were hated by most, but now that he showed up in the last one people suddenly want to see an Amazing Spider-Man 3.
