San Antonio has a new shirt sponsor this year. Self Financial. And they'll also be wearing their original uniforms for several games this year.

Why is the wordmark arched so drastically? The originals didn't look like that and it just leaves a ton of empty space along the sides.

Vegas grey jerseys will be the 3rd.  They just flipped designation.

Where did you hear that? Every report I've seen has said that the grey is being dropped altogether, and a new black third jersey is going to be introduced, along with a new RR.

Re: Golden Knights - makes me kind of sad. Their grey jerseys were one of my all-time favourites of the modern era. The gold ones are nice but.. they work better as a third jersey. Having the greys at home, and gold alternates was so perfect, why change it...

Apparently Bill Foley thought that the grey jerseys being worn by fans in the stands blended into the seats too much, and he wanted something that popped more.

I'm sure at some point the greys will be brought back. Especially in 10-15 years once the nostalgia for the inaugural Cup run ramps up.

Very bizarre turn of events where, even though there was a year-long hype train to tank for Shane Wright, he fell 3 spots and the Habs took Slafkovsky 1st overall.

I don't want to crap on this pick for no reason. But I'm not sold on it (yet) because even though he had a late surge, I thought Shane Wright had more upside being granted exceptional player status at 15 and had far more points, last season.

Maybe Slav will end up being better than Shane. Maybe HuGo see things differently, beyond the hype. But this has the potential to make Hughes look like Bergevin 2.0, if this busts...

Exceptional status doesn't necessarily equal amazing upside. People obviously think of Tavares/Ekblad/McDavid, but there are also guys like Joe Veleno & Sean Day who were granted it. Wright was never labeled a generational talent, and it seems like his ceiling is a very good 2 way centre. Considering a lot of these kids were barely able to play the last couple years, I'm sure there will be a lot of surprises over the next few seasons.

If I were a Habs fan I'd be pretty happy coming out of the first round with Slafkovsky, Mesar, & Kirby Dach.

Side note, I do think it's interesting how different sports have evolved to have such different norms. Mismatched jersey/shorts looks so out of place on a basketball court, but most people here woud agree that it's how football uniforms should always be worn.

I guess this fits in this thread, but I really liked these uniforms.

The Sabres comparison doesn't work at all because they brought back a new and improved version of the jerseys they wore in the 70s and 80s, there's a few key differences (mostly the much more vibrant shade of blue, texture on the logo and white stripes on the blue jersey etc)

So basically you're proving my point here. This is exactly what the Oilers should have done instead of trying to cosplay as Gretzky's team.

So you say the Oilers jerseys are dated, but if they did something as simple as adding a couple thin white stripes to their home jersey they would suddenly be fine?

    Austin Powers Doctor Evil GIF

Also, the Oilers did add texture to the logo that wasn't around in the '80s/'90s.

    Again, time to move on

They tried moving on. Twice. It's clear at this point what the fans want.

Also, the team wore the royal blue for 8 more seasons after Gretzky was traded, including one Stanley Cup, so the uniforms have a deeper connection than just one player.

Well that sucks because navy alt should gone.

I'm sure it'll just be a one year thing to clear out some stock without having to discount it.

Also this. This is McDavid's team. Time to move on from Gretzky. It screams "hey we suck now but remember when we were good??"

I'm not sure why this always seems to get brought up with the Oilers. No one says "the Bulls need to update their uniforms, the Michael Jordan era is over" or "why are the 49ers dressing like Joe Montana still plays for them". When you have a classic look that is beloved by most of the fanbase you should probably stick with it. Especially if you're Edmonton and bringing back that look for a second time.

I can't imagine the Avs donning this bat- :censored: crazy jersey and turned it into their main set, even if they replaced the triangles inside the A-mountain with the C from the Colorado state flag. When the best jersey ever in your entire franchise is the SS jersey people lambasted it for being such a coherent mess, you've got a problem you need to fix.

But hey, ever since blue pants have replaced black pants from a year ago, it's a step in the right direction. All they need is to take all the black and silver out (as some people suggested), and I'll complain less.

I never said it was the best uniform in franchise history, or that it should be the basis of their main set. All I said was that they managed to strike a good balance of the colours. Aside from the bottom of the jersey meeting the pants, all the blue & burgundy elements are separated by white.

  10. I know the Wild had almost no leverage considering their cap situation, but that still feels like an underwhelming return. Faber is a Minnesota kid and played for the Gophers the last couple years, so I guess they've gotten plenty of looks at him.

It's honestly weird how bad they were that year because clearly they had some dudes on that team. Matt Duchene was there too. And we all thought at the time what terrible luck it was to go through that season and wind up with only the 4th pick. The guy they got just won the Norris and Conn Smythe, the three guys taken in front of him are good (Nico and Heiskanen) to full-on bust (Nolan Patrick), but in a redraft Cale Makar goes #1 every time. Hockey is funny.

Plus they used the first pick of the 2nd round that year to take Connor Timmins, who was a big piece of the Kuemper trade.

It's also pretty cool that on their way to winning the Cup they knocked out Duchene, O'Reilly, and Barrie in consecutive rounds.

  12. The Utah Jazz rebranding & immediately admitting to their mistake has to be a record for the fastest a team has went from a 180 with their brand to a full 360 back to the old one beloved by fans. It got me thinking about instances where a team has made a drastic change to their colour scheme that actually stuck. There are tons of cases of teams trying to force a new brand(s) onto their fans before eventually returning to an old one (or something close to an old one):

    • Astros going back to blue & orange after trying a navy/gold & brick/sand/black
    • Brewers bringing back blue & yellow
    • Blue Jays ditching the black & grey
    • Padres returning to brown & yellow
    • Pistons hopping on the teal bandwagon before going back to the classic colours
    • Warriors getting rid of the power ranger and going back to blue & yellow
    • Sixers ditching the black & gold AI era set
    • Wizards playing Bullets dress up after trying the blue & gold look for a while
    • Coyotes returning to the kachina set
    • Sabres trying to be a black & red team before bringing back the classic colours/logos
    • Islanders experimenting with the fisherman/navy then bringing back the original uniforms
    • Canucks taking a couple detours before a return to royal & green
    • Capitals going back to red, white, & blue with an updated wordmark logo

By comparison I can only think of a few times where the 180 has stuck:

    • Seattle Mariners - They've worn navy, teal, and silver for almost twice as long as blue & yellow. They do have a fauxback alternate, but it doesn't seem like there is a big push for them to go back to the old colours full time
    • Tampa Bay Buccaneers - People have come around on the creamsicles as a once-in-a-while thing, but the 2 Super Bowls have cemented pewter & red as the definitive Bucs look
    • Pittsburgh Penguins - It may have been a pandering move to switch from double blue to match the Steelers & Pirates, but the black & yellow isn't ever going anywhere

I didn't look beyond the big 4 North American leagues, but can anyone think of other drastic rebrands that actually worked?

Does anybody know when the next jersey watch for icethetics is coming? Also is it confirmed what teams are going to revel new sweaters beside the Retros

    Thanks

The Oilers are most likely going back to the royal blue (not exactly a new jersey). I believe there have also been rumours of the Ducks going with orange primaries, and Carolina updating their red jerseys.

Then that was a supremely bad read of the market. Why did they think Salt Lake City would go for second-rate hypebeast garbage?

I think they were ambitiously trying to create a 'global brand' that had mass appeal beyond the state of Utah. And the tech space loves the extreme minimalism when it comes to design, so I can see why they thought a black & white J note was the way to go.

The North America World Cup bid doesn't have to worry about white elephants with their stadiums when it's over with.  2 MLS stadiums, 3 Liga MX stadiums and 11 NFL stadiums. Some countries have no idea as to what to do with their stadiums after their World Cups end because a lot of them were built largely for the World Cup.  That's not a problem at all for these stadiums.  We know what happens to these stadiums once the 2026 FIFA World Cup ends.  To be honest I find that to be boring as the unknown fate of venues after a World Cup and Olympics is what intrigues me the most.

Toronto has announced that they will be adding seating to BMO Field in order to meet FIFA's minimum capacity requirements. It is going to go from 30,000 to just over 45,000, with the extra seats being added behind the goals. They've said these will be temporary, but they're leaving the door open to making them permanent if TFC thinks it's worth keeping them around.

There's currently a new subway line planned for Toronto that will have Exhibition Place/BMO as one of the terminuses, but unfortunately it isn't supposed to be done until 2030.

  16. Colorado has looked dominant, but I'm not ready to write Tampa off just yet. They've always brought their best to closer they've gotten to elimination, and as the old cliche goes, you aren't in trouble until you lose at home.

I still think the Avs win it, but I'd be very surprised if it doesn't go at least 6 games. Maybe that's just wishful thinking since this is too good of a matchup to be done so quickly.

I never minded the Yeti mascot or the Yeti foot. In fact, I really liked them. Even though Yetis are related more to the Himalayas and not the Rockies, I still get the connection they were going for. A snowy mountain creature didn’t ever seem that too far fetched for a team named the Avalanche to use.

My high school's sports teams were called the Avalanche, and we also used burgundy & blue as our colours. When they decided to add an actual mascot, the students got to vote on the name and what it would be. I think our options were a snowman, a snowball, a snowflake, a St. Bernard, and a yeti. The yeti ended up winning the vote. We didn't live anywhere near mountains, so it made even less sense for us than it did Colorado.

Yeah...about that: in the late '90s/early 2000s there really was a lot of purple in the NBA: the Lakers, Jazz, Suns, Kings, Hornets (albeit not primarily), and until the Michael Redd days, the Bucks. Six squads of purple.

    You forgot about the Raptors.

I wonder how much of this is coming down to different interpretations of the reveal’s language.

Specifically, there’s the part that revealed next season’s city and classic uniforms, followed by the year ticker going from 2024 upwards, indicating purple would be worn in some form indefinitely.

I personally took that to mean the city and/or classic uniform would be purple every year, but others seem to be interpreting that to mean purple will be primary after 2024. Honestly, I’m not sure which one is right at this point, especially with some indications (even from the Salt Lake Tribune) that the Jazz truly are in damage control mode over this. 2024 looks like it’ll be an interesting, telling year.

My guess is the black & yellow will be around in some form for the next few years as it slowly gets phased out. The remixed purple jerseys will be alternates in 23-24, and maybe move to primary status the year after that, with one or two of the black/white/yellow being demoted to alternates.
