It won't come to me as a shock if Bettman and the rest of his gang build a church upon the First Nation graves, take a huge dump on said church, spewing out anti-mask and anti-vaxx statements like yapping dogs, and to top it all off, intentionally misgendering and insulting some group of Trans people, JUST to spite the Canadians into furious thinking and bluffing while laughing at how much outrage they can get and still get their positions as official leaders of the NHL.

EDIT: I feel this 'wishing a terrorist to come and kill that guy' isn't enough. Gary Bettman makes mentally challenged people look like Einstein in comparison, considering what kind of thinking he's thinking. I may be a middle-level autistic, and even I know that is shameful by league's standard.

Shouldn't the Devils be the ones doing this?

Especially since the Devils sure as hell aren't using the Rockies stuff for much of anything anyways.

Actually, when the Devils updated their home & away jerseys a few years ago they claimed that the new sleeve stripes were supposed to be a nod to the Rockies striping.

  3. So it's looking like the Coyotes are finalizing a plan to play at the new ASU arena for the next 3-4 years while they get their own arena sorted out.

    https://gophnx.com/2022/01/27/coyotes-in-advanced-discussions-with-asu-to-use-new-multi-purpose-venue-as-interim-arena-solution/

It only has a capacity of 5000, which is half of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, but it does have luxury suites & lounges.

How?  The Hierarchy is the same on both jerseys.  Red is dominant, black is secondary and yellow is tertiary.

Black is the clear secondary colour on the road whites regardless of the pants.  The black stripes are thicker than the yellow ones and you can't count white as a team colour.  Every team in the league has a road white.

I count white because when you look at the throwbacks they have a balanced colour scheme of red/white/yellow at home, white/red/yellow on the road.

The black trim on the logo & numbers is thinner than the yellow, but I guess you could argue black & yellow are equal. Still, there isn't enough black on the white jersey to justify how overused it is on the red.

So far, @B-mer is the only person who's posted a concept with black that looks decent to me.

Not only is this the best Flames jersey but it's also one of the best looking uniforms in the history of the league.  Not a single concept that attempts to merge black trim with the retro template is an improvement over this.

    U19tPjq.jpg

The issue with this set was that the colour hierarchy was too different on each jersey. On this one it's red-black-white-yellow, but on the road jersey it went white-red-yellow-black. The black pants didn't look good on the road when black was the 4th most prominent colour on the jersey.

Um, pardon? Someone mentioned they thought the Flames looked better with black, and that spurred this conversation.

I'm not seeing anything that suggests the Flames are bringing the pre-Edge look back.

Well they brought back Blasty for the reverse retros (although is it really reversed when all you did was change the sleeve/hem colour?), so I would assume that the RR 2.0 will include black to some degree. They could also just pull a Vancouver or Buffalo and bring back the throwback as an alternate.

(Oddly enough, I created these nearly a year ago to the day.)

This isn't an improvement over what they're currently wearing. I don't mind the red & yellow bleeding together a bit, since it creates a warm fire effect. No one seems to have an issue with the Kansas City Chiefs not having black in their uniforms, so Calgary shouldn't be a problem either.

It's funny that we're already seeing BFBS making a comeback. The Mets throwing back to the black jerseys after going back to the old look, the Sabres bringing back the goat head after finally returning to royal blue, and the Flames most likely bringing back the pre-edge red & black in some form.

Mike Trout is not an all time great. I have nothing against him taking money to play in a place where nothing matters and there’s no pressure - I’d absolutely do that too. But winning matters, and if you’re not winning, it’s simply more important (and much harder) to play in certain cities to make a real impact.

Mike Trout has completely empty stats, and much like our discussion re: Phillip Rivers, Mike Trout simply doesn’t matter in any way shape or form.

that can certainly change between now and when he retires.

Individual players in baseball probably have the lowest impact on the game of any sport. You could get on base every time you're up to bat, but you still need teammates who can bring you home. You can crush a home run, then the next inning watch your pitcher get shelled from the outfield. Baseball also has the lowest percentage of teams who get into the playoffs.

Obviously winning would be huge for Trout's legacy, but you can't just write him off because he hasn't won. Ken Griffey Jr. never got to a World Series, but his impact on the game is still felt.

I may be on the minority, but I hate the fact that Buffalo uses more images of buffaloes than sabres.

As a kid I always just assumed that a sabre was a type of buffalo/bison because that's all their logo was (I wasn't paying close enough attention to uniforms then, so I didn't notice the shoulder logos).

I'm 50/50 on the OT rules. I mean if your defense can't get a stop, why should you get the ball back?

By that logic, why should KC get to win the game without their defense getting a stop? If a team hits a home run in the top of the 10th, would you just end the game there and say "if your pitcher can't get the out why should you get to bat?"

If a team scores on the opening drive, the other team should get a chance to match. If they do then you start all over again.

Regardless, I've long said OT should be the 4th quarter all over again. 15 minute period and however it ends is however it ends. I've never liked sudden death in the NFL. It doesn't fit with the way the game is played like it does in hockey, or like it would in soccer.

Meh, playing a full quarter would most likely lead to teams just playing to run out the clock. I'd rather not see a playoff OT game ending on a guy taking a knee.

Have you watched any Rams "home" games?  The only home benefit they get is that they don't have to travel.  Every "home" game I've seen of them sounds like a road game.

It's LA. The city is full of people who will hop on a bandwagon when it's the place to be seen. Even the Kings had people coming out of the woodwork when they were going on Cup runs.

I do. What I'm saying is that DC should have gotten an expansion team in the '90s. Therefore, the Expos wouldn't move to DC and would have folded instead.

Expanding the league then folding a different franchise right after is a bush-league move that would feel like extorting expansion fees from owners.

Contraction in general completely kills a league's credibility, especially when you have several markets without teams that would gladly support a team.

At the end of the day, the nature of baseball as a sport is bad for business. You have at least 81 home games, many of which are played in the middle of the day during the week, and you have no clock. The season covers the entire summer, when there are many other things to occupy people's time. Outside of maybe 5 or 6 markets, you can't expect teams to be selling out every game.

  11. I'm wondering if Adidas could just be offering pre-edge throwbacks in the new template to fans. We've already seen the Stars one, and I haven't heard any rumblings of Dallas actually wearing it in a game.

Buffalo seems like they're trying to pretend that black & red was never part of their colours, so I'd be surprised if they actually bring those back on the ice.

I want this jersey in current Blues colors OR this jersey with the same colors, but the eagle is replaced with a blue note.

I'm picturing the ST LOUIS text in a navy, yellow, royal pattern instead of red, white, red.

So you want a Tampa jersey with a Blues logo slapped on it?

St. Louis should go with a yellow jersey for the next RR.

Well what I meant was, they’re ditching the grey, updating the gold to primary, and coming out with another third.

But it’s most likely the new Reverse Retro line

I wonder how many teams will keep the same reverse retro, and how many will have new ones…

That was mentioned in the article, and considering how much Foley loves the gold jerseys I'm sure it's been suggested. It seems like it'd be a divisive move though. People either love or hate them.

For the RR, I'm sure the league is going to force teams to come up with something new, even if it's just a recoloured version of the old ones (i.e. burgundy Nordiques/Avs, green Wild Stars, white Peyote Coyote).

I think the success of Winnipeg has been a fantastic story for the NHL and a model worth replicating. On the whole, you'd think you would be better off being wildly successful in a small market that supports the team rather than struggling in a much larger market that doesn't. And in a gate-driven league, logic would think replicating the success they've had in small-market Winnipeg would be great.

It's been a fantastic story in Manitoba and, to a lesser extent, in Canada, but I don't think it's necessarily had a huge impact on the league as a whole. Things in Winnipeg have pretty much gone as well as they possibly could have, but they've still hit the small market ceiling and don't have anywhere else to go.

They have far & away the smallest arena in the league, so despite selling out almost every game, they've still been a bottom 5/bottom 10 team attendance-wise. They haven't been losing money, but are still the 26th valued franchise in the league.

When you consider that this is a best case scenario for Quebec City, I can understand the league's hesitation.

  15. It might be a little early for a '22-'23 season thread, but Bill Foley recently confirmed that the Knights will be getting a new jersey for next year.

    https://vegashockeynow.com/2022/01/15/bill-foley-confirms-golden-knights-to-get-new-third-jerseys-soon/

According to Foley, “We do have a new jersey coming. We do. I don’t have one handy but we sent it back for a couple of modifications but it’s a good one and you’re gonna like it."

The gold alternate has only been around for 2 seasons, so I'd be surprised if it gets replaced already. This most likely is going to be part of the Reverse Retro 2.0 program. I'd expect a black jersey.

Well St. Louis had an NHL team, and most of the other expansion 6 were in traditional hockey markets.  I don't know much about the Oakland/SF situation and whether there was any appetite there or not.  Either way, there's nothing wrong with giving something a shot, but much like Captain Picard in First Contact, sometimes the auto destruct sequence needs to be activated rather than continuing a futile resistance.

At the end of the day, if the NHL hadn't decided to widen its footprint in the '60s & '70s the WHA would've done it, and would have potentially overtaken them.

I'm not sure if you guys are using the word niche correctly.  I mean the sport is a niche sport with a passionate following in Canada, the northeast and north-central US, and a few other markets, and then mostly apathy everywhere else in North America.  I'm not saying that a team should consider moving to the mall in Hartford, but the league should go where it's wanted (like Quebec City and... well that's all I got right now) and abandon some other places.  NHL doesn't need the footprint that the major leagues have.  It was arguably at it's peak popularity well before moving teams to these places and expanding to places that weren't asking for it.  I mean... is there a need for the Florida Panthers?

Based on your logic, the league shouldn’t have ever expanded beyond 6 teams in ‘60s. I mean were people in Missouri or California really begging for NHL hockey back then?

I was working in the front office when they moved to those uniforms, and I couldn't hold back my eye rolls when they got shown to us. Last year they were smart enough to at least get rid of the hashtag when they updated the uniforms (they still say RNation though).

As to their logo, I always found the whole fireball thing to be an interesting approach (I'm told the inspiration was from the "flame of Prometheus"). It's cool to look at--but it's a pain to work with. The main issue is that due to its overall shape it is next to impossible to center correctly--it requires a whole lotta nudging & eyeballing. (That logo's placement on shirts and sweaters literally is all over the place depending on who's producing it.) Still, though, I do like it for its uniqueness; the Miami Heat's logo is the only other one I can think off offhand that features the essence of a fireball (at least among the big 4).

The NHL has a few teams with winged logos that have similar centering issues (Detroit, Ottawa, St. Louis, Philly). The Wings used to place their logo with the wheel centered on the jersey instead of the whole logo.

You had me sold at “John C. Reilly as Dr. Jerry Buss.”

Apparently this series is responsible for the deterioration of Adam McKay & Will Ferrell's personal & professional relationship. Ferrell is a huge Laker fan and said that Buss was his dream role. He was initially linked to the part before the producers decided to go with Reilly instead. McKay didn't even call Ferrell to let him know before the story broke.

The closest thing to the Browns/Ravens relocation is the Winnipeg Jets of the NHL.

Like the 1996-98 Baltimore Browns, the Jets' records, history, lineage continued in Phoenix. When the New Jets came along, were the city of Winnepeg and new Jets franchise able to pry the old Jets records back from the Coyotes, 'fake' like the team just went on a decade-long hiatus, and say the Coyotes were just expansion?

The Coyotes still reference their history as the Jets 1.0. They have guys like Bobby Hull & Dale Hawerchuk in their ring of honour, despite them never having played in Arizona, and the franchise scoring records include guys who only played in Winnipeg.

Similarly, the Jets 2.0 include the Thrashers in their history. Ilya Kovalchuk is still the all time leader in goals for the franchise.

I have seen the Jets differentiate between "franchise history", which is the Thrashers/modern Jets, and "Winnipeg hockey history", which combines the 2 Jets era & ignores anything that happened in Phoenix/Atlanta. That seems to be the best practice for situations like this.

Naming a team after its fan base makes as much sense as the Las Vegas Black Holes, Green Bay Cheese Heads or the Buffalo Mafia.

Wasn't the Colorado Crush AFL team meant to be a reference to the Broncos' Orange Crush? I know arena football isn't the best source for an example, but I don't see the issue with going with a name your fans already have an attachment to. When you take the Native American elements out of the WFT brand the only tangible elements you have left are the city name, the colours, and the fans dressed as hogs in the stands.
