I don't like the gradients and the drop shadows they've put all over the logo. Design wise, it's really nice though, especially the way they implemented the warning flags.

Yeah the gradients remind me a bit of the Sens scrapped 25th anniversary logo. I'm sure the flat version of the logo will look better.

This has always been a cope by sunbelt defenders. None of the NHL's national TV partners have ever or will ever even begin give a damn about the Coyotes, Panthers, etc. NBC didn't care about losing the Thrashers. If anything, the Canadian teams don't want to cut another slice out of their TV contracts. One reason why the Senators may be Quebec City's best chance.

There's not a chance the Sens are going anywhere. If Melnyk decides he finally wants to sell the team, or the league forces him to, there are plenty of potential buyers who would keep the team in Ottawa. And the league would also block any attempt from Melnyk to relocate the team on his own.

Ottawa is the 4th largest Canadian market, has one of the highest median household incomes in the country, and has a lot more corporate dollars than QC. The lack of competent ownership & a downtown arena is all that is holding them back, and Bettman knows this.

There is an explanation of that in the other NHL Thread. There is actually a pretty interesting story behind it. (At least I thought it was interesting)

Yeah, that's a funny connection, and one of my favourite cheap owner stories in sports history. But it would be hard to believe that the team would embrace a joke at their own expense. This is an original 6 franchise, not the Hurricanes.

  4. Not bad, but I'm not sure what the point is of having "ARENAS" in blue. It's barely visible from 10 feet away, let alone outside in a football stadium. It almost looks like they sewed on white letters, then changed their mind & pulled out the stitching.

Some cream or brown pants/gloves would look good with the jersey.

  5. The Sabres don't look bad, but it's a little too close to their main set. I think it would've been better if they swapped the main logo out for the shoulder patch. It also doesn't help that the Blues had a very similar jersey for the Winter Classic.

The Leafs have already done the Arenas throwback, so maybe they go with the more basic version this time:

I’m still not trolling? What? My point was that Stafford and Goff both got put into crappy situations. Stafford spent 12 years in Detroit. A franchise that literally did nothing beyond Calvin Johnson to try to get him a ring. You can’t do much when you have nothing to work with. On the other side, Goff had some decent years in LA. Including a SB appearance, but now he’s subject to the same dismay as his counterpart was.

Goff had some decent years because of the team around him. As soon as Gurley fell off and the o-line started to show some cracks, he got exposed. McVay didn't even trust him with the full playbook.

I don't know if Stafford is a HoFer, but there's not a chance Goff would have been able to win a Super Bowl with the team putting up 43 total rushing yards.

I’m not sure how thinking Stafford is HoF and providing solid points is considered trolling or being intentionally dense.

Stafford is a legitimate case HoF. Sorry he played for Detroit, I guess?

People are saying you're trolling because you tried to make it sound like the Lions traded Stafford for Goff straight up. It was clearly a downgrade at the position, which is why they got a boatload of picks in exchange for taking on his contract.

I don’t know how you can say he was “clearly the best player on the field” when I didn’t even notice him until the last 2 plays. Kupp made plays all game, and was the only option that last drive. He willed them to win.

You didn't notice him because the Bengals o-line was double/triple teaming him on most plays. When a guy is good enough to draw that much attention it opens things up for other players, which is why the Rams were able to tie the record for sacks in a Super Bowl.

I'll do you one better: remember when the Atlanta Thrashers had to move because they had no arena to play in? The arena in Gwinnett seats 11,000 for hockey. Everything is made up and the points don't matter.

The Thrashers moved because there was literally no one in the state of Georgia that was interested in buying them & keeping them there. It had nothing to do with the arena situation.

Whether you like it or not, the Coyotes have an ownership group that is committed to the market. As long as there's a faint possibility of them getting approval for the new arena they won't be going anywhere.

Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp. All I have to say. Unbelievable. Both of them. Kupp was amazing on that last drive. Incredible.

Aaron Donald is the best player in the league, top 5 defensive player of all time. What a moment for him. Sealing the title on back to back plays.

Unfortunately for him the MVP votes still need to be in by the 2 minute warning for some reason. If they're voting after the game, the stops on 3rd & 1 then 4th & 1 would've probably tipped the scales in his favour.

at this point, I'm fully convinced the Coyotes are eventually just going to end up folding. that'll be a fantastic black eye for the NHL to have, since they seem to be hell-bent on accumulating as many as possible.

The NHL isn't going to fold a franchise. They obviously don't want a team in Quebec City, but if this new Tempe arena doesn't get approved it will probably end up being a Thrashers situation where they have no other choice. I'm sure Bettman would prefer Houston as the plan B, but there is no indication that anyone there is interested in owning a team.

Obviously neither one is ideal, but as far as temporary arena situations go, I'd take a brand new 5000 seat arena over a 10,000-13,000 dump that's 60 years old.

May have already been discussed, but has the NHL actually said why they're so deadset on making it work in Arizona? They have no arena and minimal fan support. There would be practically nothing to lose by moving. There are plenty of cities that have an arena already ready and none could really do worse in terms of fan support.

They have an ownership group that's committed to the market (for now), so Bettman isn't going to force a sale. The ownership group is heavily involved in sports betting, which has quickly become a big revenue driver for the league. Gambling has a large presence in the state of Arizona, with the DBacks, Suns, and Cardinals all opening up sportsbooks in their venues.

Greater Phoenix is also one of the largest television markets in the country. Considering how much ESPN/TNT just paid for the national rights, it wouldn't look great if they immediately pulled out of the market.

I feel like for teams that have changed their look as often as the Kings have, that's kind of a tricky proposition due to how long they've been around and how varied their branding has been; some people will just connect more with the purple and gold than the black and silver because of it being a unique color scheme and champion for that to be the main look, especially when their current look is...pretty stale. It's kind of like the Canucks, except there's not as much consensus on what the "right" look for the team is.

And upholding a look because "we won stuff in it" isn't always a good idea; take the Broncos, for example. All I ever see from Broncos fans when it comes to teams needing an update are requests for new jerseys closer to their originals, even though they've won all three of their Super Bowl titles in their current look.

I do agree that you shouldn't always revert to a championship look. I think most people would prefer to see the Ducks go back to their Disney look instead of the championship look. But like @IceCap said, the Kings situation is different.

Aside from the Miracle on Manchester, they were largely irrelevant in the purple & gold. The acquisition of Gretzky, and the switch to black & silver marked a turning point for the franchise. They added purple back into the scheme, and faded back into mediocrity. They then went back to black & silver, and won the Cups almost immediately after.

I'm not opposed to them tweaking the primary look. I'd like to see just a crown as the crest, and the piping removed, but don't need any wholesale changes. Keep the purple & gold around for alternates/throwback nights.

Twitter has shown a turning tide in favor of returning to the old team uniform style. About time popular Twitter opinion got it right, hopefully it leads to a switch back.

Like @Lights Out said, this always seemed bush league to me. It's as if the NBA didn't want to pay for actual All Star uniforms, so they just told guys to bring their own. I don't love it for baseball either, but at least every MLB team uses a white (or close to it) home uniform & a grey (or close to it) road jersey.

I also like the idea of All Star-specific jerseys for people who want to buy a jersey of a player they like, but who happens to play for a team they aren't a fan of. For example, I wanted to buy a Wayne Gretzky jersey, but wasn't interested in wearing an Oilers/Kings/Blues/Rangers jersey. Instead I bought one of the orange Campbell conference All Star jerseys.

Isn’t royal blue and orange tied to Edmonton’s only Stanley Cups and the greatest player in the history of the sport…yet they changed that up…?

First of all, the Oilers still use the same logo & jersey template. They just darkened the blue & made orange the home colour. Can't really compare that with the Kings.

Secondly, I think it's just a matter of time until the oilers go back to the royal blue.

With them coming out of a rebuild, this'd make a whole lot of sense. We know that the Kings' first Reverse Retro was a huge seller, which likely told the team that this is where the money is; and it's a good way to cap off your transition into a new era to have new jerseys and a new look.

I'd be surprised if they're not following up on that this time and stealth-testing a rebrand to that kind of look.

The black & silver is associated with the franchise's only Stanley Cups, and the greatest player in the history of the sport. It won't be going anywhere.

I'm sure purple & gold will be part of the alternate rotation, much like the Devils' green & red, or the Canucks skate throwback though. This allows them to have their cake and eat it too.

The Edmonton Eskimos had the same problem. They rebranded into the Edmonton Elks in half the time, did it better than the Washington Commanders, and on a fraction of the budget.

I think the Rams & Commanders are evidence that spending too much time on a rebrand just leads to overthinking and convoluted designs.

The Guardians & Elks didn't spend multiple years hyping up their rebrands or wearing placeholder uniforms. They just released the new identities with relatively minimal fanfare.

Washington was never going to come up with a name that made everyone happy, but they could have at least kept the uniforms traditional. Then in 5 years, once people have adjusted to the name, they could explore more drastic changes.

Pollin's wife favored it out of the 5 choices, the other's being Dragons, Express, Stallions, and Sea Dogs.  Now we get the Commanders' uniform mess because of the owner's wife.

Boy, the NBA really wanted a team called the Dragons in the '90s/'00s. The Raptors, Grizzlies, and Bobcats almost went with it, and the Nets nearly rebranded as the New Jersey Swamp Dragons.
