After the two year lockout is over, and the NHL re-organizes...

The slimmer, trimmer, 20-team league hopefully will look a little like this

Prince Of Wales Conference

Patrick Division

New Jersey Devils

Philadelphia Flyers

New York Islanders

New York Rangers

Tampa Bay Lightning

Adams Division

Chicago Blackhawks

Boston Bruins

Montreal Canadians

Detroit Red Wings

Toronto Maple Leafs

Clarence S. Campbell Conference

Norris Division

Columbus Blue Jackets

Minnesota Wild

St. Louis Blues

Colorado Avalanche

Smyth Division

Calgary Flames

Edmonton Oilers

Phoenix Coyotes

San Jose Sharks

Vancouver Canucks

Nice touch making an original 6 . . . er, 5 division, but for practical reasons (travel time and expense) the teams in your Adams and Norris divisions would probably prefer if Ottawa and Chicago were switched.

Swap the names on the Adams and Norris divisons and you're set. Detroit's always been in the Norris Division, moving with the Division from the Wales Conference to the Cambell Conference in the last major realignment before the geographical names took over.

contract the defending Stanley Cup Champs?

i wonder what the hockey gods would have to say about that one.

Not likely. The Tampa Bay area has a small, yet rabid hockey fan base and winning the 2004 Stanley Cup will only help it grow.
