Las Vegas Snake Eyes

Because it's just a matter of when Las Vegas get's an NBA team I've been toying with names and logo ideas. Not in love with the nickname of the Snake Eyes but I think the design I came up with is cool. Would love some helpful input on how to make it better though. Btw, yes I know the variation logo kind of looks like sperm but just wanted to though it in there to see if anyone else can come up with ideas to make it look different. spacer.png

Change the name to Vipers, then it will be a good team name. I'm not going to attempt to change the logo, because I suck at Photoshop. So, to describe, use only one snake, make it's tongue stick out, and voilà!

Random thoughts that I'm writing down as I go through this concept ...

  • Main logo:
    • Using the two snakes to form a snake's head is clever, but I think the two outside snakes have to be a little more abstract to really work. They have to be less recognizable as snakes on their own in order to have the bigger effect of forming the snake's head, if that makes any sense. It should almost be that the big snake head should be the first thing the viewer sees, and then the have a little "a-ha!" moment when the two snakes forming the head come into view.
    • Be careful and make the two outside snakes line up with each other and are symmetrical. Right now, you can see where the tails overlap each other and that one snake's nose/jaw is lower than the other.
    • You've also got a big blob of green above the big snake's head that is blocking out some of the basketball's lines, which is jarring to the eye. I would either get rid of the basketball in the background altogether, or outline the outside snakes in green then draw a shape for the inside of the big snake head that doesn't go beyond that outline.
    • Watch your shades of black. You can see in this logo and some of the other ones that one shade is a true black while the other is a very dark grey that could masquerade as black. It will look better if you use one consistent shade of black, likely the darker one and seen on the snakes' tails in this logo.
  • Alt logo:
    • The biggest thing is that you need more definition between the two dice. They just morph into one blob right now. And you can make the pips (the markings on the dice) bigger, just to fill up space.
    • Is the color of the single highlighted pip on each die the same pink as the eye colour in the main logo? If it isn't, it should be. Pare your colour scheme down to black, green, pink, and white, and work in those constraints.
    • I think you can get rid of the shield altogether. The dice with the "SNAKE EYES" lettering could be a solid logo by itself with an outline or two around all of it to tie it all together. The star with the eye could stand on its own as another variant logo.
  • Lettering:
    • I'm not the biggest fan of the font you chose, but I get why you chose it. It does have a bit of that casino feel to it. That said, I'd encourage you to look around for other fonts. There might be one out there that strikes a nice balance between the casino feel and the pointiness of snake fangs and the snake illustrations in the main logo.
    • This might be a good place for the star/eye logo to land in place of the diamond, since the diamond doesn't really show up anywhere else in the logo set.
  • Variation 2:
    • Again the difference between your shades of black are pronounced here. Pick on and stick with it.
    • If snake eyes are two ones, why are there three dice in this logo? Maybe why the pip on one is not white? Just go with two dice, each streaking about halfway around the basketball. Make those streaks the outside boundary of the ball and get rid of the superfluous black border. You might be able to add the actual snake eyes to those dice as pips other than the one, as you have now, but I think it might be better without.
  • Uniforms:
    • Overall, pretty solid stuff here.
    • I like the idea of the tonal pattern on the Icon and Association sets, but what you have just seems kind of random and not tied into any logo or other design element. You could do some spaced-out tonal polka dots to evoke the single pip on the dice, or if you keep the diamond in the wordmark or the star from the alt logo, those could work and tonal patterns as well.
    • Also, whatever pattern is on the tops should carry over to the shorts.
    • For consistency's sake, you should outline the shorts numbers on the Association and Statement sets like you have on the tops.
    • The Association and Statement sets also have solid green waistbands on the front view and striped on the back view.
    • All four sets have dark grey collars on the back views that are incongruous with the front views.
    • I think all four sets could also stand to have a little more pink in them. Not much, mind you; maybe just some piping or an outline here and there. But something to tie them back into the colour balance of the main logo.
    • The vertical writing on the City set isn't my favourite, but that's a personal thing. Just remember to account for the fact most players will have their tops tucked into their shorts, so the lettering shouldn't go all the way down to the hem.
    • I like the number font you chose, but it is more angular than the wordmark font and the two don't work together well for my tastes. The player name font on the back of the jerseys, though, is too complex and would be difficult to make out from far away or on TV. Most NBA teams use one of two nameplate fonts for simplicity and legibility; I would encourage you to go in that direction.

You could also use a name like Rollers, to double down on the gambling theme.

They already have or had a team called the Rollers in Vegas. I think they play in the tennis league so I was just trying to come up with something creative. But like I said I am not in love with the name.

Wow! Thanks for the solid input! I appreciate it. I know there more tweaks that need to be done but sometimes when you work on something you lose sight of the details you pointed out.

I would definitely go with Variation 2, and build off of that.  I've seen a bajillion snake logos.  I can't say I've ever seen a die with two actual snake eyes on it like that.  That looks cool and wicked and you get what it is without even having to write out "Snake Eyes" anywhere.  Don't worry about having the sperm trail behind it.  Just use one of the dice.  I'd try to maybe make the pip the actual iris of the eye, and then try out each of the numbers (in dice pip format) for that top face. Something fun you could do with this team is use ALL the numbers, and make variants kind of like how the new Iceland logo has the various elements that can all be broken apart and a fan can identify with just that element if they want.  In this case, a fan could say, "I'm a Fiver!" and get the variant merch that has a five on top.  Etc.

But I think the die is really strong all by itself.  Just make it bigger and experiment with seeing if the pips work as irises.

I was completely unaware.
