I don't think anyone expected this group to come down to the final day for every team in here. Most probably expected Slovenia to be cannon fodder.

Switzerland and Germany tied while Hungary survived on a last minute goal to eliminate Scotland.

The Germans win Group A while Switzerland is the runner up. As such, Germany gets the runner up from Group C while Switzerland will face the runner up from Group B.

Hungary, with their win, is in the running for a Wild Card slot. However, with a goal difference of -3, they are on very tenuous footing right now. They need the following to happen in order to clinch a Wild Card spot...

-BOTH Albania and Croatia tying or losing tomorrow

 -Slovenia losing to England

 -Serbia losing to Denmark

 -Turkey beating the Czech Republic

Group B is done as Spain beats Albania and there was a draw between Italy and Croatia.

Spain wins the group while Italy is runner up and will open the Round of 16 against Switzerland on Saturday.

Croatia and Albania have been knocked out.

Group D opened up action today at the Euros and while France and Poland drew, Austria knocked off the Netherlands to win the group.

Austria wins the group and will face the Group F runner up next Tuesday in the Round of 16. France, as the Group D runner up, will play the Group E runner up on Monday.

The Netherlands, by virtue of their four points, has clinched one of the four Wild Cards out there. There are three potential spots they could land in the Round of 16 - either one of the Sunday games (either the early game against the Group C winner OR the late game against Spain) OR the early game next Tuesday against the winner of Group E

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over in Group C, both games ended in 0-0 draws.

This means England wins the group, Denmark finishes as runner up and Slovenia earns one of the four Wild Cards.

As for the Round of 16...

-England will play one of the Wild Card entries (which could be either the Netherlands OR the third place team from Group E) in the early game on Sunday

-Denmark will play Germany in the late game on Saturday

-Slovenia will await the results of tomorrow to see where they go. Right now, it's either the early game on Monday against Portugal OR the early game against the Group E winner

As for the remaining two Wild Cards, it's down to basically three teams: Whoever finishes third in Group E, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The games in Group E (Slovakia vs. Romania and Ukraine vs. Belgium) are the early games tomorrow. Here's the breakdown there...

Romania - Advances with a win over Slovakia. Is eliminated if they lose and Ukraine wins

Belgium - Advances with a win over Ukraine. Is eliminated if they lose and Romania wins

Slovakia - Advances with a win over Romania. Is eliminated if they lose and Belgium wins

Ukraine - Advances with either a win or a draw against Belgium. Is eliminated if they lose OR both games end in a draw

If both games are draws, here's the breakdown for that...

Scenario A - If the games have the same score OR if the Ukraine-Belgium game ends with a different score then the Slovakia-Romania game, then it goes to goal difference and goals scored. Romania would win the group via total goals scored followed by Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine.

Scenario B - If Belgium scores one more goal in their draw game then Romania does in their draw game, head-to-head comes in and Belgium won that game. If not, then Belgium would need to score two or more goals in their draw game than Romania does while Romania needs to score more goals than Belgium does in their draw game.

Slovakia would then finish in third place ahead of Ukraine via goal difference.

Over in Group F...

Portugal - Won Group F

Turkey - Advances with a win over the Czech Republic OR a loss and a Portugal win. Is eliminated if they lose and Georgia wins

Czech Republic - Advances with a win over Turkey. Anything else means elimination

Georgia - Advances with a win over Portugal. Anything else means elimination

Goal Turkey. That will be enough for the Turks to advance. Czech Republic hearts broken and they will leave Germany.

And how about Georgia in a must win game to move on to the KO's beating Portugal!

I realized it is cut off at the bottom: Switzerland plays the defending champs Italy and France plays Belgium

Oops I was posting in the wrong thread. Soccer confusion. Anyway, that was mostly Tim Weah's fault -- what IS it with the nepo babies on this team acting like children? -- but that ref was crooked as hell.

Normally I'd say that the downside of "GO TO EUROPE" discourse is that these guys get too pampered to deal with dirty Concacaf play. But Serie A is the Concacaf of Europe so no excuses there.

Weah is trying to get Berhalter fired eh

Doubt it. If anything, this is the perfect screw-up to give cover to keep Gregg around if they crash out at the group stage. Can't blame the coach for a player committing an obvious red offense and leaving his team high and dry for 80 minutes of the game.

If that happens (Berhalter staying) I know a lot of fans will be disappointed

There is some prime nonsense going on tonight in KC. This ref is going to get someone killed and it seems pretty clear the US has no chance.
