Well, The Omaha World-Herald is reporting that the Calgary Flames are, indeed, preparing to announce the move of their dormant American Hockey League affiliate from St. John, New Brunswick to Omaha, Nebraska.

Finally a 30-team AHL, but that will leave Worcester without a team.

It also seems to be the trend in the AHL to move right after an anniversary. Worcester's 10th was last year, St. Louis moves them out. The Saint John Flames had either a 5th or 10th year, Calgary shuts the team down.

"'What the fudge do they know about hockey in Omaha, Nebraska?!'- Slapshot 2."

How about the University of Nebraska at Omaha at the new Quest Center?

"I better go take a long walk off a short pier or something."

Some people on this bolard have told me to do just that.

Well, while Omaha, Nebraska is still the most likely home for the Calgary Flames' top farm club beginning in 2005, it appears that a couple of other cities are also being considered.

Flames President and CEO Ken King is said to be weighing options in two other unnamed cities. He has gone so far as to say that no lease arrangement is imminent with Omaha's Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, the agency which operates the city's Civic Auditorium.

King's reluctance to close the deal in Omaha may have something to do with the potential glut of hockey that a third team in the city would bring. Omaha is already home to the University of Nebraska - Omaha's Division 1 college program, as well as the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League, a Tier 1 junior league.

Alternately, King may only be claiming to have other cities under consideration in an attempt to maneuver the MECA into giving him the most amenable lease possible.

Whatever the outcome, King says that he hopes to make an announcement within the next few weeks.
