dfwabel
This information is taken courtsey of the Helmet Project:White-shelled helmets were used by LSU for its 1997 Independence Bowl matchup against Notre Dame. Strangely, this is one of three helmet changes I am aware of by SEC teams for an appearance in the Independence Bowl in recent years (see also 1991 Georgia and 2000 Mississippi State). It has been reported to me that this design was also used during the October 5, 1996 game against Vanderbilt - I would appreciate any photographs from this game confirming or denying the report. They did in fact wear these with gold jerseys VS Vandy that season.Vandy was miffed that Gerry Dinardo left them the season before to take over LSU,and he was instrumental in LSU going back to white at home.Well,in an effort to forceLSU to wear their purple,Vandy wore white at home and LSU showed-up in gold, which threw egg on the face of Vandy and made them even more of a laughingstock.Search around a lot of the Tiger's "homegrown" fansites and photo clubs and I'm sure you can find something on this.
