Nice to think soccer will survive until 2014 but it seems like a leap of faith.

Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN has renewed its rights to televise Major League Soccer games through 2014, the company said Friday.

The eight-year renewal with Soccer United Marketing gives ESPN2 the rights to televise 26 regular season and three playoff Major League Soccer matches each year on Thursdays during prime time. Disney's ABC will televise the league's opening match each season, All-Star game and the Major League Soccer Cup.

The content under the agreement can also appear on ESPN's multimedia distribution platform, and has the right to offer in-progress and post-match highlights across all its outlets.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. ESPN signed its first agreement with Major League Soccer in 1994, and ABC began broadcasting games from the league in 1997.

I look at the "proverbial leap of faith" as a good thing when it comes to MLS...an 8-year TV commitment is a great for any league, especially MLS.
