Actually Graham was the first NFL player to wear a face bar, not a face mask.  There had been a number of experimental facemasks even from the days of leather helmets.  In the early 50's some players started wearing clear Lucite face bands on their helmets, however they would occasionally shatter on impact and create even more havoc to a player's face.  After Graham wound up with 30 stitches to his kisser, the Riddell company constructed a helmet with a single face bar (like what Sean Landeta wears) made out of a plastic more durable than Lucite.  Graham was the first to wear that type of facemask, but he was not the first player to wear a facemask.

Otto Graham - an incredible QB and a great American to boot.  He'll be missed.

The Browns announced they will be paying tribute to Grahm this Sunday.  A video tribute will be played before the game and the players will have a black 60 (not sure what Grahm's number was) on the back of their helmets for the final 2 games of the season.  Kind of ironic the Browns are playing the Ravens this weekend.  Old Browns vs. New Browns.

The Browns will wear #14 on their helmets.
