The logo is straight outta 1998 clipart, but what can ya do. This name change is supposed to piggy back off of the athletic conference of the same name, even though they will operate under seperate entities.

FYP.

The Missouri Valley Conference sponsors athletics in every Division I sport except for football, which is what prompted the change. Five of the Gateway/MVFC members: Illinois State, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, and Missouri State, are members of the other Missouri Valley Conference, which prompted the change.

Sounds akin to the CAA's sponsorship of football, formerly the Atlantic Ten's sponsorship of football, formerly the Yankee Conference.

Is there a discernible difference between sponsoring a sport in a conference (such as with the CAA) and renaming as the MVFC? Or is this semantics?

I realize there is a whole athletic conference, but due to the recent success in the Final Four Tournament, the basketball conference has become popular, that's partly a reason for this change. I think it even says in the article.

It's about money, marketing, and brand recognition.

From a marketing point of view, it sucked to see a school like Delaware or James Madison win national championships in football under the A-10 banner, when most people in the east consider the A-10 and CAA "competing" conferences in most sports. I'm sure the Valley was sick of telling people "Southern Illinois is in our league, but for football we're in the Gateway Conference."

With more TV exposure, the Valley schools lose on a branding opportunity when the FCS championship games are on TV and schools like UNI, SIU, and Illinois State have all been ranked in the Top 10 nationally and the conference they compete in for most sports is transparent to most people.

The reason why the CAA Football conference came into existence was because prior to Northeastern University joining the CAA, there were only 5 CAA teams in the Atlantic Ten for football, and once NU left the America East to join the CAA, the CAA could "officially" sponsor football and control the automatic bid. The CAA then becomes eligible to get the proceeds from the BCS (yes Football Championship Subdivision schools get a small amount of bowl money from the BCS), AND control the bid and collect dues, etc.

The A-10 also didn't want to have the headache of dealing with a sport where only three of its members (Rhode Island, Richmond and Massachusetts) played the sport. Prior to the CAA taking the sponsorship of football from the A-10, the following conferences were represented in the A-10

CAA (6): Northeastern, Delaware, Towson, James Madison, William & Mary, Hofstra

Big East (1): Villanova

America East (2): Maine, New Hampshire

A-10 (3): UMass, URI, Richmond

Now with Georgia State and Old Dominion sponsoring football by 2011, there wil be 14 teams in the CAA for football and 8 of them will be CAA teams.

I don't think the Missouri Valley Conference is in the same boat, as the article said only 5 MVC "core" members sponsor football.
