STL FANATIC Posted July 1, 2008 Share Posted July 1, 2008 The Illini are currently using the best helmet they've had in their history.Don't misinterpret that statement.They've never had a great helmet.Their current one is just the best.Now, I like the arched Illini, but it looks goofy in execution in my opinion. I'd like to see the Block I used in some form. Perhaps NIKE's Circle I logo, though I'm not sure that's possible because that logo is only allowed on NIKE merchandise and the helmets are obviously not a NIKE supply.I also think that in order to better match the current uniforms, they should make the outside stripes on the helmet thinner. If they do so (and ONLY if they do so), they could consider reversing the colors and making white the color of the outside stripe with navy the color of the inner stripe. Too bad they don't seem to feel that way.Of course, the orange pants were only designed to work with the orange and white jerseys. Illinois used stars as awards stickers as far as I know. Or maybe it was captain, or year in school. Not sure the history behind it. Helmet Project says they were used as early as 1962.
