MarkAtnip
GreetingsOne of the joys of working in sports radio has to be the volumes of free print material we receive. I was in the process of flipping through the University of Kentucky football media guide when I came across a photo of the 1950 championship team (If you believe the Sagarin ratings) that ended Oklahoma's winning streak in the 51 Sugar Bowl. I noticed the guy in the middle of the front row wearing number 1A. According to the official UK athletic site: " ...Bryant introduced ... a unique number system to identify twins Harry and Larry Jones, who both lettered three years (1950-52) with the Wildcats. Harry wore 1A and Larry wore 1B. Harry led the Wildcats in all-purpose yardage in 1951 with 964 while Larry led UK in kickoff returns (21.1 avg) in 952."Larry is in the lower picture, to the left of number 26, but his number is not visible.Just a fun story from an old sports photo. EnjoyPS # 10 is Babe Parilli
Joshawaggie
Pretty funny to see. Wish we could see 1B, I'm wondering how close to 18 it looks. I thought 18 was 1B before reading the rest of your post, plus the fact he is right next to 1A. @josh_j12 CFA- Fargo Bobcats
MarkAtnip
I thought that #18 might be 1B for a minute until I read that they were twins. 1A and 18 definately AREN'T twins. The only other guy that would fit the bill would be the guy on the edge next to 26, and he looks like the guy in 1A
Spearhead
LSU "pioneered" this in the late 1940s:Y.A. Tittle is I, by the way. They used number letter combos in games. I have some game shots of them but I'll have to dig them out.
OpaqueChicken
What would have happened if they got a second pair of twins. 1AA and 1BB I AM SCORE!
CAB
This is really interesting, I never knew they used to do that. I suppose it could work nowadays, but some letter might not be distinguishable from other numbers.
ldswoosh33
This is cool. Using letters as part of the numbers. I wish teams would do that now that would look awesome. Romans 5:8 NikoLazar.com
