2014 Super Bowl in New York or New Jersey?

Wow. You learn something new every day. I had no idea the Statue of Liberty was in NJ. You'd think NJ would promote that.

That's because it isn't. It's a silly falsehood spread by New Jerseyites with low self-esteem. But reality is not subject to wishful thinking.

All of the islands in New York Bay belong to the state of New York. No matter how close they are to New Jersey. Even if the waters surrounding them belong to New Jersey. It's been that way since the 1660s.

Staten Island is also much closer to New Jersey than it is to anywhere else in New York, but somehow Jerseyites don't maintain any kind of logical consistency when it comes to staking their claim to Fresh Kills.

Bedloe's Island, which was later renamed Liberty Island, is actually in New York County (Manhattan). Although it's now uninhabited and run by the Parks Service, it's still part of Jerry Nadler's Congressional district.

The reason Lady Liberty is no longer on New York plates is because the state changed its plate design. You know, California took the sun off its plates a few years ago; didn't stop the magnificent Pacific sunsets.

The city and state of New York still uses the Statue as their symbol:

Remember kids, don't believe everything you read on the InterWebs. Neil Armstrong really landed on the moon, Elvis is not working as a bouncer in a Portland nightclub, and the Statue of Liberty is and always has been standing firm on the soil of New York City.

If Tijuana had a team would it make sense to call them the San Diego whatevers?

Actually, several Tijuana radio stations brand themselves and function as San Diego stations. They're just on the other side of the border because Mexico's FCC lets them broadcast at higher wattage. I believe the Padres' games are aired over a Tijuana station.

Its that same as those idiots who think the Brooklyn Nets should be called the New York Nets

Hey!

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

This is beyond stupid, and somewhat aggravating. When they say "New York", they mean metro New York, which includes New Jersey. I get how the politicians need to make it seem like they're sticking up for their people, but those people are stupid. If not for New York (city), there wouldn't be a stadium in New Jersey, nor a lot of what's there.

Fair enough but it's a completely different STATE.

Same New York argument could be used for Tijuana Mexico and San Diego. If Tijuana had a team would it make sense to call them the San Diego whatevers?

I'd say NY/NJ is the right way to go on names.

Mexico is a different country, not a different STATE. So it isn't the same argument--national borders are much more consequential than state borders.

Its not about New Jersey insecurity its about money. Why should New York be on every single sign and logo promoting the Super Bowl and attracting all the dollar revenue. If the Super Bowl were promoted as New Jersey then maybe you'd see SOME money coming into nice nearby towns like Hoboken, Morristown, Wykoff maybe even people hanging around Xanadu if its finished by then. Theres a huge amount of money that can potentially be lost if New Jersey isnt included in the promotion. New Jersey is going to pay for all the police, snow removal, new roads, etc everything to have the Super Bowl in New Jersey and see none of the money in return.

Thats what this is about. Not sticking up for the little guy. No one in New Jersey thinks of themselves as the NY's little brother.

All of the NFL's Super signs will have both New York and New Jersey on them. That is the regional name they are giving it. Much like how last years Super Bowl was South Florida and this years is North Texas.

I'm sure they wouldn't admit to thinking of themselves that way, but actions do speak volumes. ;)

I don't doubt that New Jersey will be putting up the lion's share of the infrastructure. But I'm curious as to how you think branding the game as "New York/New Jersey" will somehow result in a "huge amount of money" for the citizens of New Jersey that would otherwise be lost. Do you really think that putting "New Jersey" on some of the game's materials will mean tourists flocking to Hoboken?

This isn't about money. It's about the NFL not wanting to bruise the egos of influential people in New Jersey that it will continue to need. Same as it was in Dallas, same as it was in Miami.
