CJR
Technically, you could use both, since the last Canadian team to win the Cup was a Montreal Canadien team. Unless it's actually proper grammar to use the plural version of the nickname when refering to a specific year's team.
NoHoJoe
Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister of Canada when the Canadiennes won the cup in May of 1993, just weeks before he turned over his PM post to Kim Campbell in June of 1993. Jean Chretien was elected PM in November of 1993, weeks after Ms. Campbell resigned her post and called for national elections.
