Canada's official crest, originally on the Red Ensign (Canada's official insignia next to the Union Jack) had the three connecting leaves on the flag.

This particular Red Ensign was Canada's flag from 1957-1965.

Prior to that, the leaves were Green.

The flags prior to that were all similar, carrying the official markings of each province where the crest was to be.

However, the Union Jack was always recognized as the official flag of Canada until 1965. It is still an official flag of the Commonwealth, and is flown at all government legislatures across Canada (excluding Quebec), and as an official Canadian flag on 3 days during the year; Victoria Day, Statute of Westminister Day, and Commonwealth Day.
