Southland Conference Soccer by UA

So I've been wanting to start and complete my first ever full series of concepts for a while, and I've always wanted to do a concept series using the Southland Conference since that's the home of my undergraduate alma mater, Nicholls State. After participating in the European soccer concept cup and having much worse finishes than I anticipated, I decided on a soccer concept series for the Southland Conference. I hope that this will help improve my creativity with regards to creating kits. All kits will be Under Armour kits as I want to test out this refined template I modified from one of the UA catalogs, with final presentation of my template taking significant inspiration from raysox's template presentation in his excellent CONCACAF Redux series. I will be creating primary and clash kits for all teams in the conference and will possibly take some design elements from existing school unis if the school sponsors soccer. Currently, the league itself does not sponsor men's soccer but does sponsor the sport for women's teams.

I'd like this to be a "living" concept series. So I plan on keeping a list of suggestions & comments provided by you all with each concept and then come back to each for a 2nd round and maybe even a 3rd round of designs for each school. As it stands now, I haven't created or modified any logos to give them a more "soccer-ish" feel or look. That MAY be something I try on following rounds of design.

Below is the list of members schools from the Southland Conference. Each will have its own individual post for each concept, starting from the top and working down the list.

Abilene Christian is a new member of the Southland so it's one of 3 teams with which I am not too familiar. Just based on what I've seen on the school's website and given the school's name, I felt a more traditional and conservative approach was necessary. For the primary kits, I went the Arsenal route with the white sleeves on a royal purple jersey. And, in my opinion, there's no more traditional look in soccer than a collared jersey. For the clash kit, I stayed conservative and gave it what I feel is a distinct collegiate feel. That's also the basis for the choice in typeface for the numerals and name on back. It's a pretty basic look, but I think that works well for the Wildcats.

Suggestions/Comments
- Switch sock colors on kits
- Hoop socks or solid white on primary kit
- Solid purple socks on clash kit

I don't mind that crest at all.

One thing I don't like is that the socks are different from the shirt, like for the grey clash, the white socks look very different and thrown on, I'd much rather see grey socks, or if not, purple. With white sleeves I think that white socks would be better than the grey sock you choose, since there isn't any grey in the shirt (other than the numbers, which should be white too).

Everything else seems fine. Looking forward to this, it should be good.

Just to be clear, that's an official school logo. As I am doing on the first drafts of all of these, I'm using official school logos. I haven't made any soccer crests for any of the schools.

Good point on the socks. I'll probably make that minor adjustment.

Well, with the lack of comments on Abilene Christian I'll assume either it's close to perfect or just not enough to get people to start commenting. If you have any comments/suggestions/critiques on ACU, please post them. In the meantime....on to the next school.

Central Arkansas - another purple and gray school. I wanted at least one school to have a striped shirt, and it didn't take long for me to decide on UCA as that school. The inspiration comes from the school's football field (as shown below). I decided to go with the midfield logo from the football field on the chest of the primary kit while only using the bear head on the shorts. The number and NOB font is "Zeroes Two" which can be found in the logo on the clash kit as well as on the field (sidelines and endzone). I kept the primary shorts and socks very basic as the shirt is busy enough. Looking at the kit again, I may change the collar from white to black as the white seems to be a bit too random. For the clash, I wanted to stay with a modern theme to go with the typeface so I decided on sublimating the bear paw logo on both the shirt and shorts.

Again, comments/suggestions/critiques are welcomed and encouraged. As I did with ACU, I'll keep a list of everything in this post for my 2nd round of drafts. Thanks!

Suggestions/Comments
- Change collar from white to black on primary kit
- Look into using black sleeves on primary kit
- Thicken the striping on the primary kit
- Remove sublimated bear paw from shorts

- Stretch numerals vertically

The striping is too small in my opinion, I think it would look better with less, but thicker stripes.

What he said.

I really like that subliminated paw on the shirt, but I feel its unnecessary on the shorts.

Colonels, I just found this thread and definitely am going to follow it through to the end. It's nice to see a NCAA college soccer conference is getting some exposure on the Board. Especially with NCAA soccer season is kicking off in August.

Abilene Christian

I love the use of all purple and white sleeves on the home kits. I would change the home socks to all purple or even a purple and white hooped design. The clash kit is nicely done with the stripe along the center of the shirt with the squad number and like the color of grey used for it. I would use a solid purple for the clash socks

Central Arkansas

Just like mamiller99 mentioned, the striping is too thin on the home kit. I would make them wider and it would look good with the violet and grey that is used on UCA football field. I would change the collar on the home kit to black but leave the sleeves that violet purple. The clash kits are nicely done. I love how you used the same fonts for the kits as found on the football field sidelines, nice way to tie it all together. I would remove the sublimated bear's paw from the shorts. It looks the best just on the shirt.

Maybe you should think of placing the conference logo on the right sleeve of the kits vice on the back.

Keep up the great work Colonels...

I have definitely considered moving the conference logo to the sleeves....but I wanted to be a little different than practically ever other league that put league logos there. I also wanted to keep the sleeves open for possible designs there....although I haven't done that yet. Moving the conference logo may be toyed with on my set of 2nd drafts.

Thanks for the feedback guys, keep it coming.

My last design for today is another newcomer to the conference - Houston Baptist. The Huskies are one of the few teams in the conference that sponsor both men's and women's soccer. The primary design features while and orange horizontal pinstripes on a blue jersey. The pinstripes were influenced by one of the women's kits I saw online while researching. I decided to go with blue as the more dominant color of blue primarily due to Sam Houston State being in the conference also. The color palettes are very close and the Bearkats are heavily orange in all sports. Going with blue gives the Huskies a unique look within the conference. The clash kits were influenced by the homes where I decided to sort of invert the primary, going with alternating blue and orange hoops sublimated on a white shirt. I decided on a very basic collegiate looking font for this kit as I felt it matched up better than something a bit more fluid. So far, my only possible change is going with white or orange socks on the primary kits. Not sure if there's too much blue there.

Again, comments/suggestions/critiques are welcomed and encouraged. As I did with ACU, I'll keep a list of everything in this post for my 2nd round of drafts. Thanks!

For Houston Baptist, I would go with white socks as the orange is a tertiary color for the school. I really like the alternating white and orange pinstripe hoops...nice touch IMO. It doesn't take away from the primary school color.

As for the Southland Conference, I was wondering why I couldn't find anything on the conference on Top Drawer Soccer or College Soccer News. The conference only runs a women's competition with the men's soccer not being available. Thought I was going nuts :P

Haha, yeah, you won't find any mention of men's soccer in the Southland. A few schools, Houston Baptist in particular, have men's soccer programs. Anyone have any other comments on HBU? I MAY post one design tonight. I spent the day working around the house and replacing a kitchen faucet so I've fallen a little behind on my schedule.

Next up is newcomer Incarnate Word. They're also the first of 2 black and red "Cardinals" teams in the conference. So the challenge here is creating identities for the 2 schools that are distinct from one another...which is what I've attempted to do here. What would any league be without at least one team sporting a halved shirt design. Since UIW has that not-so-unique color scheme, I figured they would be a great candidate for the design as their primary kit. The top is paired with basic white shorts with red stripes down the sides. On the clash kit, I opted to go with a large, red cross on the chest which is also featured on a much smaller scale on the back beneath the collar. The clash features red shorts with white stripes down the sides. With this design, I think that the shorts would be pretty interchangeable. There's no special reason for the font I picked...I just liked the look.

Again, comments/suggestions/critiques are welcomed and encouraged. As I'm doing with the other concepts, I'll keep a list of everything in this post for my 2nd round of drafts. Thanks!

Well, no more comments on UIW so we'll move on to Lamar. On the home, I went with the ol' standby sash with a red-to-black gradient. I'm not a HUGE fan of gradients....but I do love a good gradient on a sash. Instead of going with the cardinal head logo I have at the top, I decided on using one of the secondary logos - the collegiate "LU" which I feel is much more suited for a soccer concept than the cardinal head. The primary shirt is paired with a pair of basic black shorts and white socks. For the clash kit, I went a little crazy with the colors. As Griffin correctly predicted, I went with yellow as a main color and also threw in the light green - both of which are official secondary athletic colors for the school. I'm not too sure I'm happy about the clash socks so that may be something I look into changing the 2nd go around. For the font, I felt it appropriate to go with the Lamar-Bold font provided for download so graciously by Conrad in his Fonts by Conrad thread.

Again, comments/suggestions/critiques are welcomed and encouraged. As I'm doing with the other concepts, I'll keep a list of everything in this post for my 2nd round of drafts. Thanks!
