  1. Selfishly, I hope they stick to the markets from the golden years of like 2005. Around the time of the first skipped season, those teams felt extremely minor league because of the markets and team names. Who knows if this works but the brand equity is there with the original AFL league logo and name.

The reason for the Memphis color change was the league realized that it had too many teams that wore red.  Stars, Generals, Stallions, Gamblers and Bandits all have red as either their helmets or jersey or both.

Which is fair enough, but they were replacing a red/black team and just ditched a unique color scheme today. If they wanted to have more colors they should have started fresh or brought back Washington or San Antonio

  3. I feel like i'm in the minority....

but if you're going to pretend to throw back to a league with branding, either go all in or not at all. None of this half ass stuff. The Pittsburgh Maulers were a purple and orange team! Same story with Memphis! You made your bed to tribute the USFL and now you're changing it. It would've been better off just doing a whole new identity.

I love the idea! The “CLASSIC” taking cues from Pike’s Market is really good, and the red works very well with the color scheme. The only thing I’d like to point out is that I don’t think there’s enough contrast between the navy blue and the blue of the ferry; the details of the ferry get lost a little bit to me. Maybe bump the tint on the ferry blue up a little bit, and I think that should do the trick.

Great work! I think the inspiration and the composition you have is really, really good.

You were so right about this, and it's something I had sat on and done in the background. Here is an update with a lighter blue AND some icicles hanging off the Winter script

  6. If you've been living under a rock, the Football Bowl Subdivision is going to look very different soon. The Power 5 conference are bickering, while the losers in that are sucking up teams from conferences like the American and Mountain West. There's a combined WAC-ASun conference joining soon made of teams from Texas and the South East. Conference USA is getting picked apart as teams go to conferences with stronger holds on their region. That's where I come in. I made this post in the pointless realignment thread outlining the idea for a conference made in the footprint of the Big 12 conference. There's not one in FBS, although the Southland and WAC make good claims to it despite not going far north.

I would keep CUSA teams Louisiana Tech, UTEP, and future members NM State and Sam Houston State coming up from FCS. Texas State is a team i feel should be better, but they slotted into the Sun Belt when they moved up. Arkansas State would join them in this new conference. North Texas is one of the SIX teams moving to the American, but geographically them, Tulsa, and Wichita State(who doesn't have a football team any more) would be here. Finally, I feel like this conference would make sense for North Dakota State and South Dakota State to jump to the big time. We'll also take conference mate Missouri State that would surely have rivalries immediately.

That's a lot but i'm not pulling too much I feel outside of Wichita State.

Starting with a name, it would be easy to name this something PLAINS or PRAIRIE, but the conference has teams on the east and west of the great planes. Central is vague yet representative of the conference that stretches from Mexico to Canada. NCAA has conferences named BIG and GREAT, but Grand Central rolls off the tongue given it's name being used across many different applications. The logo features a 4 sided star and emphasis on the Central's C, in the middle of the logo.

Sorry for rambling, here's my concept!

Problem: the Conference USA is being picked apart and tries to serve a need that the American Athletic Conference and Sunbelt already does  better - occupy the broadest reaches of the Southeast

Solution: a second tier conference for the Plains region in the way the MAC and Mountain West acts for the Big Ten and Pac 12

    New Mexico State
    UTEP
    Tulsa
    Arkansas State
    North Texas
    Texas State
    Sam Houston State
    Louisiana Tech
    Louisiana
    Rice

Little rivalry pods of NMSU/UTEP, Rice/Sam Houston, Tulsa/ArkSt, Louisiana schools, North Texas/Texas State

(ignore that half of these schools are going to the American conference, i'll let them take San Antonio because they fit the characteristics of other schools in that conference. We'll trade them for Tulsa. Also trade FIU to the Sun Belt and open WKU and MTSU to the highest bidder)

This might be a good conference for South Dakota State and North Dakota State to move up. I'd be willing to lose the Ragin' Cajuns and Rice to stay in the SunBelt and AAC. Maybe Missouri State can come up too to stretch north.

  8. Love doing concepts for outdoor games, and this was no different. Seattle is in a situation where they already have a baseline for an event since the All-Star Game will be at the same stadium 6 months prior.

What I wanted to do was tie the game closer to the sea compared to nature, since the team is named the Kraken after all. I started with some signage at the famous Public Market, and decided the text could work laid over scaffolding. Trying to find the piece that tied it together, I reached out to a friend from Seattle that suggested the ferries that move around the sound.  I took a while to get that looking not too complex, and came up with what you see below.

  9. I had fallen out of interest in college football as FSU entered their bad period after I graduated, but this year they made me remember how fun this all was. Started listening to Shutdown Fullcast, going on r/CFB, and watching so many games.

I went to three bowl games in the last 12 days. Both Tampa games and the Cheez-it bowl in Orlando. It's fun again!

A couple other things that could work-

    • rings expanding out from the pylon for “coffin corner” punts. A ring from 5 yard into the 2 yard line is 1 pt while a ring from 2 to goal line is 2 pts

    • The unapproved rule proposal from the Ravens a few seasons ago stating that any kickoff that goes through the field goal post up rights is 1 pt

Hmm not sure about either of these. There’s something so perfect and mechanical about the look of a football field that rings would only mess up. Plus I think having a kickoff being a second extra point try has flaws that teams without Justin Tucker would not benefit from.

id rather try the Schiano rule for changing possessions at that point

    What an embarrassment

I genuinely think that if the Commanders wanted a mascot, a pig makes the most sense. It's fun, silly, and ties to the non-racist history of the team.

    That being said

AT TWO NINETEEN DURING YOUR GAME WEEK 17 OF THE SEASON? THE ONE YOU GOT ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFFS FOR? IN UNIFORMS YOU DON'T EVEN WEAR??? In what world does this make more sense than waiting until the draft, or even right before training camp??? Why are the Commanders committed to releasing things haphazardly mid season!

I'm absolutely baffled here. All mascots these days are hated immediately, even if they win over public opinion. Gritty and Blooper were hated immediately. Chance and Buoy are forgettable. But my god at least they were given a shot.

  12. San Diego State Unveil New Uniforms
The Aztecs held a press conference today to unveil new uniforms by Florida-based uniform manufacturer Danger Brand.

“We're excited to launch these new uniforms. I think thus far, these represent the direction we want to go with uniform design" Michael "raysox" Taylor said at the press conference outside Snapdragon Stadium Thursday. "SDSU started a new era with this beautiful stadium, and the trajectory seems to be going upward for the entire institution."

"We wanted to make something that fit both the Aztecs, and the greater college football uniform landscape. The first thing we did was create a font that matched the SD monogram, something I felt was a missed opportunity for the brand in previous years. The helmet actually having the logo, plus a sharp two tone red and black shell gives a mysterious look. We also wanted to create a pattern that both is a respectful nod to Aztec culture, as well as being a uniting identity for the SDSU brand."

"I think the biggest thing was to make something that feels iconic year 1. We want something this campus and city can feel proud of. They are San Diego's football team."

(quick character break to say the Mountain West logo is a concept I did this month)

San Diego State Enters Agreement with New Uniform Manufacturer

The Aztecs will become the second university program to sign a deal with fledgling uniform manufacturer Danger Brand. Danger Brand, based out of St. Petersburg, Florida will supply the Aztecs with new uniforms after taking over from the previous company Nike.

"We are happy to expand our footprint west with our partnership with the Aztecs. This is an exciting time for San Diego State, with the building of a new stadium. SDSU has already been terrific partner for us and I think that through our collaboration and the integration of our brands,“ says Michael “raysox” Taylor, founder of Danger Brand. Taylor acts as the creative director, and oversees uniform design.

Danger Brand will use its new NeatO uniform cut, a high performance jersey material and stitching that allows all athletes to breathe through their jersey while staying tough in battle. The uniform deal will go into effect immediately with the forthcoming release of new football uniforms.

  14. I mean, what you're doing is a valiant effort at documenting the history of this league.

But there's just so many things that are wrong with your courts so far. The three point lines were hand drawn and lumpy, the baseline text isn't centered and inconsistent sizing. The court textures are too big. There's pixelated logos where you couldn't find good logos to place in. The low post doesn't align, and there's a stroke that appears to run along the baseline. Hell, Forum is misspelled on the first post of the thread. You seem very passionate about the league but i'm not sure these are quite database level material.

I hope this comes off as more constructive criticism to help your vision of a true database of these courts. Work on a template that can easily have colors and logos changed, double check alignment and post your references. There's a great thread for Super Bowl fields that does this. Best of luck.

  15. Totally,  Texas is much closer to Alabama than California is to Wisconsin. Then again, the second letter in the acronym stands for "eastern". The SEC can also decide to claim Florida State and Clemson because they at least border two Power 5 conferences and can pick off strays. The Big Ten doesn't really have a built in prey so they're going to span the country. I can't tell if it's mostly a nostalgia for the smooth defined geography of the 00s that I grew up in, or if I just see this as a money grab that eventually runs dry. How many more city-named colleges will be dragged up to the big time to fill a space left by a school that would rather play Vanderbilt than Virginia Tech.

Also I hadn't realized Columbia, MO is basically the same latitude as Cincinnati before you pointed it out. Now that's messed up.

  16. As someone with a geography degree, I hate this realignment

As someone with a sport management degree, I still hate this realignment

This is where it completely jumped the shark for me. The 2014 alignment sucked but at least made loose geographic sense, but two big conferences sucking up big rivals from other big conferences outside their footprint seems predatory and short sighted.
