  1. I think they should do one that covers the lockout-riddled era of 2011-2013 where the NHL, NBA, and NFL all had lockouts, but the one that deserves an entire treatment is the 2005 NHL lockout. That was sports history.
  2. Oh absolutely. It's one of those tricky situations where you have to remember that it's not as easy as the evidence alone. The prosecution totally botched the presentation, whether it was putting the racist cop on the stand without doing their research, making OJ try on the glove, not presenting key evidence like the sort-of suicide note on the day of the car chase, and their black attorney playing right into Cochran's hands with the racial slur challenge. The trial being moved to downtown for political reasons was also a setup for disaster, plus the juror selection appeared to be right out of a nightmare. They did a tremendous job of showing the backstory, too. OJ couldn't have given two s about being black, the black community, or his role as a black man in the 60s and 70s, almost instead preferring to be embraced and in the company of white people. Very fascinating to see how it took his freedom for granted and made just about every wrong decision possible. I encourage everyone to stomach the uncensored version of the show via that link in the last page. It's just incredible stuff.
  3. Just finished up the OJ Simpson: Made In America series, and you really need to watch it to appreciate what an undertaking it was. It was incredible and shocking to see just how brutally he killed those two people, especially Nicole. She wasn't a saint but nobody deserves to have their heads nearly cut off. It was INSANE to hear about the jurors take a 10 month trial and reach a verdict in 3 hours, one of whom raised his fist (he was a former black panther on the damn jury) and others who brazenly say that this was outright revenge for Rodney King and a century+ of slavery, racial prejudice and abuse. It all came boiling to a head in a way that had no precedent and no equal in terms of media scale. I don't blame the jurors, really. I blame OJ for not facing the music, whether it was by surrendering and taking his sentence like a man, or having the guts to blow his head off in the Bronco. Watch it for free below. http://espn.go.com/30for30/ojsimpsonmadeinamerica/
  4. BTW, how the hell is there not a 30 for 30 about the Eric Lindros trade yet? The Lindros Trade Tree only just died a few weeks ago.
  5. If there's anyone who would benefit from doing a podcast, it'd be Olbermann. He could dictate all the terms and have nobody to blame but himself when he inevitably becomes dissatisfied, but I guess having somebody to yell at is half the point.
  6. I would suggest installing Ghostery for android and see how it goes. Android is not my strong suit, but we can troubleshoot a bit. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghostery.android.ghostery&hl=en
  7. What mobile device are you running? What browser are you using? I do this for a living.
  8. Deadspin confuses me. Hell, half of these websites that try to portray themselves as outlets to be taken seriously to the Nth degree baffle me. Deadspin is 90% retreading hours-old news with their typical snark and appeal to the burnouts and skeptics who drearily populate the comments section, BUT on the very rare occasion they will publish a brilliant article. Sports On Earth (if it's even still a thing?), The Players Tribune, The Undefeated, Vice Sports, The Ringer, etc. - all these sites are either virtual or spiritual branches off of the Grantland and Deadspin trees, and it bums me out that I don't know where the hell to turn for good investigative sports journalism that outputs consistently and doesn't water down its own brand with veiled hipster appeal and outright authorial bias. In the end I just sort of allow reddit to be my aggregator of what is even worth reading from these places, but even that is unsavory. Nothing feels good or pure or exciting when these sites are either patronizing or unfocused, and it's even more of a drag when the ones that start to stand apart either get bought out or shut down.
  9. The Ringer is an interesting endeavor, but their connections to HBO have left them a bit of a well-intended mess at the moment. If it can last 3 years, I think they'll hone things down to functioning as at least being a refined mess instead of the current pandemonium.
  10. http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/close-finally-finding-sports-by-brooks-mystery-rages.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter Remember Sports By Brooks? Interesting little mystery.
  11. I have a feeling this contract will drastically outlive Fox Sports 1.
  12. Sorry if what I said came off as complaining, because that would imply that I care, which I don't, really. I think The Ringer is obviously brand new and will undergo refining and sculpting over the next year or so while they figure out their audience, but this morning I spent a good portion of my day reading their articles and was, on the whole, pleased with the content.
  13. Seems that the majority of negative reactions to day 1 of The Ringer are its sterile layout and Obama/Game of Thrones articles. It feels like a great deal of people weren't done mourning Grantland. There's a lot of great resumes on The Ringer's writing staff, but I hope they refine themselves over the next year or two. HBO may have mandated that he cover Game of Thrones, now that he's under their employ, but it's arguable that they simply wanted to cover pop culture with as equal a take as sports. That broad of a brush may not be their best choice in the long run. Refining their scope a bit to the sporting world would be in their best interests. ----------- In other news, I'm reading a LOT of great things about 30 for 30's OJ Simpson epic documentary, and can't wait to see it.
  14. https://theringer.com/ The Ringer is live.
  15. I'm with you. Berman was one of the first personalities I saw when getting into football 20 years ago or so, and Sundays flipping between ESPN and Fox's pregames used to be such an amazing 1-2 of entertainment, hype, and analysis. Whether people like him or not, he's synonymous with the NFL on television, and ESPN won't be the same without him in many respects.
  16. Verbatim. I think it's the safest way to go. Is it embarrassing? I don't personally think so. It's an international game with a huge influx of players who either don't speak English or have it as a second language. If people find it makes players sound silly, that's the problem of the readers.
  17. I think the hero ball aspect of basketball makes it unique among the other major American sports. The NFL would argue that the QB is a similar module of transcending the numbers game, but it isn't even a remotely close comparison. It's much more romantic and, for basketball, inherently better to see guys like Curry and James, Jordan and Malone, Bird and Johnson duke it out as the avatars of their unheralded and likely great teams/coaches. Basketball doesn't hide their stars behind helmets or facemasks. There's always a personal story to be told through their faces, their welcome showmanship, and the plainly visible impact of victory and defeat.
  18. Kind of confused about Wilbon's article today on The Undefeated. https://theundefeated.com/features/mission-impossible-african-americans-analytics/ He basically suggested that analytics and statistics don't interest black people in sports, fan or player alike. The preferred measurement aspect for African-Americans is "feel," and emotion. The ultimate goal of this was apparently to frame the potential contract offers to Dwight Howard, I guess. As a white guy I can't obviously speak for black people in any regard, but I would imagine some find this article in a way demeaning. It's a weird thing to process without another black perspective in rebuttal via individuals or en masse. Regardless I feel like "The Undefeated" has been a good harbor for reading material since its debut.
  19. Bulls need a gentle rebrand that moves on from the Jordan era but doesn't go whole hog with a lot of stupid design elements. Something like the Bucks would be a really tremendous starting point.
  20. What was going on on April 26th when we had 2600+ people online here?
  21. A friend of mine is a hardcore MGTOW (google it, it's awkard), so whenever I post something about women in the news in a positive light, he'll call me a "beta" and it's remarkably uncomfortable.
  22. I agree insofar as that I hate when these videos (or other clearly feminist-leaning viral stuff comes into the mainstream) seem to hold some people hostage if they don't champion it as a victory for the internet. Sarah Spain is making herself look a little foolish right now, but honestly I feel trapped out of saying more, as I don't want to branded a sexist or misogynist for being critical of a woman. It's confusing.
