  1. +1 on the "be careful what you wish for" in the Panthers camp. If I see any "cat scratch" striping then you can throw the entire thing in the garbage. There's not much that needs to be changed. I'd rather they keep the silver than drop it if it means keeping some semblance of the classic set. There's a reason the team hasn't changed before and they shouldn't make too drastic of a change now. I'm hoping that Charlotte FC's emphasis on blue means the team will finally make the change to blue primaries. We can (and almost certainly will) keep the all-black for primetime games but blue primaries would go a long way in endearing me to the set.

The Panthers need to avoid two key pitfalls: stripeless pants and blank, pants-matching socks. I don't have any faith they actually will but if they do then I can't be too upset.

it's also, as @MJWalker45 said, just how it's done.

In NPB, Japanese teams use romaji  for player names and team names on their jerseys. My own Yokohama DeNA Baystars have the front script in the romaji and player names also using romaji. It's also found in Japan on roadsides and the such, so it's not exactly uncommon.

It's also worth mentioning that the names ARE in Japanese, just written using latin alphabet(aka romaji)

That's not romaji - romaji is for "spelling out" Japanese words using the Latin alphabet (i.e. 野球 being written as yakyuu). What NPB teams use is just, well, English. If, for example, the BayStars were to use romaji, the front would read Beisutaazu. They also don't use romaji for nameplates because foreign players' names are spelled "correctly" and not as they would be if they were read using Japanese syllables.

I'm actually glad that Japan, Korea, China, et al. use English lettering because I think it feels up space much better than writing them in their native languages would. Those East Asian languages are very short and honestly I don't think a jersey with a massive 日 on one side and 本 on the other would look as good as their current jerseys do (or good at all, even).

  3. Currently it feels like a steep price but if the QB we draft works out then this will be worth it. Losing DJ stings a lot but I'm coping by saying that it helps save cap space and that WRs are easier to find than QBs. My only fear is that we return to the Cam era, where we had an elite QB surrounded by absolutely nothing. Very high-risk, high-reward. Personally I have Stroud at 1, Young a close 2, Richardson 3, and Levis a distant 4. Either Stroud or Young would be a great pick for me. Excited for the draft!

If Netherlands can use NEDERLAND, and the Czech Republic can use CESKO, why can't Japan use NIPPON? Just a thought

Japan historically uses "JAPAN" on their jerseys. Same with Korea and China - you just don't normally see non-Latin based languages on baseball jerseys. Besides, Victor has made a set that says「日本」and it's the pink alternate.

I dunno - given that 'Carolina blue' is a thing, I'm guessing not.

But, importantly, the shade of blue the Panthers use isn't Carolina Blue - to avoid alienating Duke fans. The shade selected, called "Panthers blue" or "Process Blue" by Pantone, was selected specifically to be in between UNC's powdery Carolina Blue and Duke's royal blue.

BTW: The Hurricanes have worn 12 different uniforms in the past 10 years, with only 2 of them matching. Their current roads and this year’s reverse retro that they wore for 2 games. So they’ve worn 11 different jersey designs with 5 different logos and never had a matching home and away design.

The Hurricanes are an example of a team, in my opinion, that will never look good, and it starts top-down. The name "Hurricanes" doesn't lend itself to sports imagery nicely and was likely chosen so that the colors of red and black would match NC State and not for any particular reason related to Raleigh or the Carolinas. Their best jersey is obviously their first set but even then I don't really like the inclusion of silver and the italicized name and number font is hard to make work well. Since then, the team has continued to make changes for the sake of making changes, including the baffling red and white set from 2013 (that didn't match the road jersey). The 2017 home set was better but still an inferior version of the '90s set due to the sublimated warning flags (although I actually prefer the color balance here) and still kept the old road jerseys. The alternate uniform sucks, I don't even hate the logo, but the gray yoke and boring striping make this set a bad alternate (and a worse primary). The new road jersey has awful diagonal text instead of the primary crest and is again missing lots of black and still doesn't match the home uniform. This year when they dropped the old red set for the terrible black jerseys and then brought back better uniforms as their alternate just proves to me the team has no clue what to do with the brand. In fact, the only good design decision they've made since 2017 was trying red helmets with the white sweater.

I just don't think you're ever going to get a good brand out of the red/black Hurricanes. Even their best uniforms have problems and they're just another red and black NHL team. Maybe a quality brand could exist with the name "Carolina Hurricanes" but certainly not one with a red and black color scheme. They should've leaned more into the 90s and gone with a more out-there scheme, matching NC State be damned. Teal in particular I think would've been a great inclusion. Now, however, the team has spent 25 years as the Hurricanes and nothing about the brand is going to change. In my opinion, the best this team can hope for is a good set of uniforms and can never truly be great because of the decisions made when the franchise first moved.

  7. I'm not really feeling the pivot to pink for Japan. Yeah they have used navy and red before, but recently they've focused on a navy and gold color scheme which is unique and also the historic scheme for a very historic team. The pink pinstripes on the gray jersey are not great - they're hard to see. The number font is quite nice, I like the pullover alternate you have. The calligraphy-inspired set is not my favorite but I do like it. Using pink as a base works really well, better than I thought it would. I actually don't really care for the pink hat, I think the navy cap would serve perfectly for every jersey.

  8. Hmm, not huge on the wordmark here. I like the design but the wordmark is kinda space age in a bad way? The lack of a crossbar feels very amateur. I know it matches their cap logo but the cap logo just sucks. There's no two ways around it, haha. The jerseys themselves are really nice, I like the green one especially.

As for the pins-less Argentina, I love it! The whole set feels much more balanced.

Panthers originally had a lot more going on at the initial release:

I can't believe that out of everything that remained from this set, the second and third worst part (second worst being the logo on the pants and the third worst being the silver helmet and its stupid stripes) stuck around. The worst part is the silver numbers on the blue jersey.

Beyond that, I actually don't hate what these jerseys are trying to do. I wouldn't even mind the black sleeve stripe on the end of the sleeve if it had an outline to match the shoulder hoop. The whole thing definitely needed revision (contrasting TV numbers? Really?) but I wish they had stuck with the blue jersey being the primary color.

Either way, the cleaned-up set they went with is still better than this and remains a modern classic.

The article, via an Internet archive, makes it sound like the alternate helmet will go with the gray color rush (which IMO other than the all-white option is the worst uniform in the current set.)

Not sure if that is accurate or not. Beat writers often get these details wrong.

Alternate helmets are supposed to go with alternate uniforms, but the Panthers managed to use their home blacks with it by designating all-black our "Color Rush" alternate and wearing black helmets with that. I could see the Lions doing something similar with either their all-white or all-blue uniforms.

  11. I'm a known Southern hockey defender, but I think that honestly the only thing that makes it work long-term is long-term success. Now, the Canes, Lightning, Preds, and Stars have all accomplished that (with Vegas well on the way), while the Yotes and Panthers have not. Obviously those two are also really hurt by their awful stadium locations but I do believe that a more successful Coyotes team could (emphasis on could) have worked. Now though? Unless the team can get that Tempe plan put through I think it's time to pull the plug. I think the team has sucked for too long to build any serious support. We're starting to see the effects of the generation raised with these teams in other markets, but Arizona hasn't paid off like other Sun Belt markets have, and I think it's because they've sucked so much.

I think hockey can work anywhere, even in Phoenix, but I think that the mishandling of the Coyotes has poisoned the well, so to speak. Move the team to Quebec, wait a bit, and when you decide to expand again for whatever reason, try again in Arizona.

  12. The slight curve down the front stretch is what really intrigues me. Both Bristol and Martinsville are straight down the stretches so Auto Club should provide something new. The 2-mile track posted a great race to finish on, but I think moving to a short track is the right call. The track needed to be repaved soon anyway (losing the great racing fans have come to love) and honestly? I'd rather NASCAR get the money to reinvest in facilities and improving the fan experience. I do wish that we had another 2-miler on the schedule that isn't Michigan (not that Michigan is bad, but I want another one to help diversify). Now if only they would bulldoze Texas.

Seems a stretch when Atlanta’s home kit has consistently featured red and black stripes three out of four times, while the fourth was a reinterpretation of black with thin red pinstripes. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s primary kit is light blue and white with minimal black trim. 😉 Though, I will say I quite like Charlotte’s home kit.

Yep, I misread what the post was saying. I thought it was about teams with color schemes that are color + white + black, not teams that are predominantly color + black. Atlanta's heavy use of gold, especially recently, still makes me hesitant to consider them trying just a red + black team but they fit the prompt more than Charlotte does.

I'm more than happy for Charlotte to keep a focus on blue and white - them not making their primary kit black was one of the best decisions they've made. I'd like to see either a checkered or pinstriped kit at some point to reference other Charlotte sports but the "Blue Arsenal" look should 100% be the standard for the team.

The last one is a bit of a stretch since Houston has also used white so much, but it gets the point across. (And yes I'm aware that just about all those clubs use a third "trim" color, but you get my drift.)

Not to tack on but I would drop Atlanta here and add Charlotte, who use "The Black and Blue" as a nickname frequently, I'm assuming like Montreal does as well.

  15. I love that set! I'd love nothing than for the Checkers to return to their blue and orange color scheme full-time. Last season the Checkers wore a Charlotte FC-inspired blue, white, and black set and it looked great. All in all I prefer them in blue over red but I don't think they'll ever change full-time. From what I've heard the owner is a Georgia alum which resulted in the red and black.
