Was thinking how this year the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers both don't use their city's name for their location. One uses a nickname and another uses the state. And thought, well, how often does that happen. And when did it happen last.

Well, easy to forget that Tampa Bay is not the city name, because it happened just last year. With Colorado and Tampa Bay.

    But here's the history

    2023 - Vegas v. Florida

    2022 - Colorado v. Tampa Bay

    2001 - Colorado v. New Jersey

    1996 - Colorado v. Florida

What is interesting, is that this is the first time not to include Colorado. And Carolina, Minnesota, and Arizona have yet to be part of a two-team non-city finals. Carolina has made it to the finals, just only faced Detroit and Edmonton.

Interesting little stat. The only Super Bowl that fits this is New England vs Carolina, unless you want to count NE vs NY. It's never happened in the World Series

For a few people that’s true. Just hope you’re not one of them.

There’s literally nothing dumber than “What if we just had a bunch of people not watch hockey so we get what we want”. It’s pure delusion/alternate reality stuff.  .

The ads are here to stay. I don’t like it. But nobody outside of some niche group - insert “there are dozens of us!!! Dozens!!!” meme - is going to boycott playoff hockey because of the ads. The constant circling back to “duhhhh ads are bad, I hate ads, we should boycott seriously but not really, and also, I hate ads” that occurs every six weeks or so is so tired. If you all want to beat dead horses so bad, set up a “Dead (Or Partially Alive) Horses We Love To Beat” thread. Constant groaning about ads - when this board clearly has no influence as to what leagues are doing - just sucks the fun and utility out of these yearly changes threads.

    #reality

There's literally nothing dumber than "You can't talk about uniform aesthetics on a board created for it!!" If you don't like ad talk there's plenty of other sites where you can defend corporate greed with likeminded people

The NFL also seems to have stopped enforcing any kind of rules around socks. That's why I think I'm ready to live in a post-sock world where players just show their legs like in college.

Spare me from seeing all of this:

You would still see all this except some guys would just have no socks. You'd just be adding another variable

Kansas City had several baseball teams named the Blues long before the St Louis hockey team came around. Nevertheless...

Yeah none of them were concurrent with the hockey team. The last was a minor league baseball team that moved to Denver a dozen years before St. Louis joined the NHL

HOWEVER, American Football teams tend to name themselves American names when in Europe. They're trying to be like what people know. That's why there's a Vienna Vikings and Tirol Raiders.

As for names, they come up on their own. Some reference the club, team, city, fans, etc.

    Toronto FC - Reds

FC Cincinnati - Lions/Orange and Blue

    Minnesota United - Loons

    Atlanta United - Five Stripes

Sporting KC - Blue/Blues (The Cauldron/Blue Hell is their stadium nickname):

    Nashville SC - Coyotes

    FC Dallas - Hoops

    Austin FC - Verde/El Verde/The Verde

    Orlando City SC - Lions

    NYCFC - Pigeons

    LAFC - Black and Gold

St Louis CITY SC - (too early to tell)

A team from Kansas City calling themselves the Blues would be great for the rivalry with St. Louis if any of them cared about soccer

As Stalekracker says, "That's money, dude."

And, I think this is eventually what we'll see as their most common combinations, once they get a few games of Icy White and Used Tampon out of their systems.

Why is Vegas such a wet blanket for hockey fans?

What they've done in their five years of existence is really amazing, will likely never be matched in any major 4 sport, and isn't praised enough.

They're envious that Vegas immediately put together a good team and front office instead of sucking ass for decades like a REAL franchise. Plus they're from Las Vegas and it's hot and sunny there which is bad for... some reason

  8. There's a lot of cool possibilities when it comes to how covid would affect the league. Maybe they temporarily go back to a 14-game schedule, maybe teams could be grouped in hubs, you could do division games only to minimize travel. Dunno how many options your simulation gives you, but you could always fill in the blanks with some creative writing.

so I may just have to cancel all of 2020

Please don't do that. In-universe it would make the USFL look terrible as the only major sports league to completely cancel their season, and in real life it would be a huge bummer to miss a full season of one of the best alt league sims I've ever followed
