As excited as I am to see the return of football to St. Louis, I'm nervous based on some speculation that the team name will be the Aces.

Or worse, based on this tweet that was posted a couple pages back

    I'm guessing it's not a Euro-centric name?

The XFL did reasonably well at the gate.  I think they were on par with USFL season 1 for attendance.  The television part of it was the catastrophic failure   In fact. The lowest atttended XFL game was around 10,000 and change.  A figure is sure the AAF would’ve killed for.  😂😂😂

They also advertised locally much better than most of the AAF teams did.

    TLDR.

Short story: A small business cannot afford to create and pay to have someone hold merchandise inventory, so they order JIT (Just In Time). As a result, they only processed orders after a certain number was met, like shirts are generally ordered in a gross (gross = 144 items regardless of size).

So few bought merchandise over months, thus the order took months to be received

I made a Squadlocker account so people that want to order jackets, t-shirts and sweaters and such for our soccer team can order what they need. I feel like at a minimum there exists something out there that does a similar job for them and doesn't rely on enough people ordering the items for sale.

Wait, is there still a possibility they could come back?  That article is the story of how a team folds.

If the AFL allows them to come back, with McIntyre as owner, then the whole league is an illegitimate scam.

If the minority owner was fully in charge and the funds, they'll probably be welcomed back. I don't think he has the money though. Tampa Bay's existence shouldn't be tied to Orlando's but I think having their closest rival be in Columbus, GA wouldn't be as well embraced as playing that team just up the road.

Look up Doug Houvenor's web site. It should be there.

Even without names and logos, the XFL is already merchandising. Who is going to buy this stuff when it will be obsolete when the names are announced?

(Some items are available in a selection of colors. Not necessarily team colors.)

Same people who did that in 2001. Some people will like the city name items over team names. I'm hoping the uniforms settle somewhere between XFL 2001 and AAF in terms of design elements. Orlando Rage were good except for the numbers. Memphis was overdone as well. Just make sure to have home and away jerseys ready, even if you only plan to sell home jerseys.

Rutgers has just one non-conference date available...in 2022.

Army is a national brand and is a draw.  UConn isn't.

I'll agree that branding is one thing, but teams need to fill calendar dates and if the American doesn't have anyone to fill UConn's slots in 2020, they'll probably just play those games. At some point though, teams need to fill slots and UConn can help fill slots that would've been used on FCS schools. Scheduling is not as desperate as people make it out to be. The problem for UConn is not having a cut of the conference pie that they would have by staying put. I'm actually surprised this move is based more on basketball than football because the reason the original Big East broke up was football taking over as the major sport in their bigger schools. You should still be able to recruit the same areas you did before no matter what league you're in and supposedly this will help men's basketball with recruiting and women's basketball with tougher games. I think the first part is possible, I don't think that second part is true.

They're UConn.  Beggars cannot be choosers.  Little to no football media rights, unless they partner locally with SNY, and which opponents can they really bring in who aren't FCS like Stony Brook, Delaware State, or and IVY? I guess BYU will always take a call.

What can they honestly make as a schedule for 2020 outside the three homes games they have (Maine, Indiana, and UMass) and the road game at Illinois?

They'd have to go with the Army model. That's the simplest way to go. They may get that big payoff game at Michigan or Alabama, but they will also probably be looking at games against their old conference mates just to get 12 games in. Heck, Rutgers and Maryland may be very happy to host them early in the season or even in the middle of the Big Ten schedule.

It's definitely a basketball move here by UConn. Part of the reasoning is that there's more competition for the hugely powerful women's basketball team (who hasn't lost a conference game since the formation of the American in 2013) in the Big East and the newly done television deal with ESPN isn't exactly that great (especially because most games would be behind the ESPN+ paywall)

Now, @LMU is right. They're the outlier in a league full of Catholic schools... but UConn is well known to most of these schools. There's tons of history between most of the core members before the big split and they're an associate member in field hockey.

And everyone that's freaking out about football may not realize this actually helps them in that they can pretty much pick their poison throughout the year. The only detriment to them is they will probably have to play their hardest games at the start of the year just to make sure they get games against the big boys.

Are any of them not being used by a club? That'd be a real waste.

Manaus is not because it's in the middle of the Amazon. Others are too big for the teams in that area to afford. Maracana has had issues as well but still gets used irregularly.

No they get off on backside bribes and deals that net them millions in personal gain to go against the greater good.

I think part of the reason Brazil is hosting the Copa America is also to get actual use out of those stadiums they overpaid for. Not all of them though.

Let's just wait and see what 2026 looks like before we make any statements we want to take back, okay?

I think 2030 would be the measuring stick. If it's in China or Argentina you'll see a ton of new projects to get stadiums up to code. The US, Mexican and Canadian stadiums are already built or already in the process of being built. None of that will kill over 500 people, let alone 5,000. We're also not as dystopic a nation as people think. It's just that bad news gets more attention than good news.

and who know what the whole geopolitical thing will be in 2022 in the area (without getting into politics)

If Platini finally fesses up to taking bribes, they should hand it off to Australia immediately. Hell, even Blatter said he expected the US to get it before Platini had lunch with Qataris and Sarckozy.

I just recently found out that Phoenix Rising of the USL has mandatory "Water and Safety" breaks during matches. Is this a relatively common thing around soccer in areas where it's unusually warm?

Only in the last few years. FIFA didn't even make the water breaks mandatory until Brazil 2014. That's partly why San Antonio FC plays most of it's home matches after 7 PM in summer. The humidity adds to the heat threat.

  15. AFCON Players Union says they need 4 water breaks during games

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/48716285

African Cup of Nations is apparently forecasting temperatures of 104 F during the tournament, which is being played in Egypt. I know moving it helped the European clubs, but unless the tournament is held in the south, they need to keep this in January. Clubs may lose great players for a month but I'd rather not lose a player permanently due to heat stroke.
