Geoff
Arizona most definitely isn't D1 yet. The game this past week (and the three remaining between the two) are exhibitions. I've seen no rumblings of UofA going D1 either. Everything I've seen has been mentioning the end of ASU dominating UofA simply because they won't be playing anymore. FiddySicks
Hmm, I may have misunderstood how close U of A is to D1 then. Maybe they were just in preliminary talks in terms of consideration and I took that wrong. From everything I've heard they're essentially trying to use ASU's move as a springboard for their own move. Geoff
Arizona should just focus on being even just a decent club program right now. ASU in now 38-1-0 against the Wildcats under coach Powers. mamiller99
From what I heard, the SEC may also try to break into D1 hockey as well. I'm loving that college hockey is becoming more prominent. I just want all of B1G to have D1 teams. That's what- She
Geoff
*Bama. Bama (and Arkansas) just moved their club program from ACHA D3 to D1 this season. Bama would like to be NCAA D-I by 2020 supposedly. Where Bama goes, so will go some of the other SEC powers. And a good number of those in power in Tuscaloosa can't stand the thought of UAB or UAH being "the only" or successful in anything. Thus why this whole UAB Football thing went down and why they tried to (actually did) axe UAH hockey before it was saved by fan support. (I know way too much about hockey.) BeerGuyJordan
I'm loving the growth college hockey has seen, especially in non-traditional markets. What will be interesting to watch is the effect it has on the juniors and the NHL/NHL draft. Thunder Bay Lynx - International Hockey Association (2 seasons, 2017-18, 2019-20, 2018 Xtreme Cup Champions) | Houston Armadillos - Major League Hockey (2 seasons, 2016-18) | Minnesota Muskies - North American Basketball Association (1 season, 2017-2018) | Louisville Thoroughbreds - United League of Baseball (1 season, 2017, 2017 United Cup Champions) | Las Vegas Thunderbirds - International Basketball League (1 season, 2016-17, 2017 Champions)
Geoff
The growth in college hockey is partially because of the influx of players from non-traditional markets. It's not really the other way around. The late 90s/early 2000s minor league boom helped with that more than college hockey will. You could field an entire team with Californians. Hell, Illinois doesn't even have an NCAA D-I team and if you took all the Illinois born players and put them on one team, they'd be competitive as hell. College hockey is still largely northeast and upper midwest but not nearly as much as it used to be. Of course, in the end it all comes down to issues like facilities, funding, and Title IX compliance, but I think many of these schools would be able to be pretty competitive within a few years of play--I wouldn't expect perennial powerhouses like Minnesota, Michigan, or Michigan State, but at least on the level of Penn State or middle-of-the-road WCHA teams. Boyeeism
Sparky holding a hockey stick should be the crest the pitchfork should be used for the shoulder logo the home jersey should be maroon or gold. The captain's patch is pretty sweet, though.
