For this year's Wordmark event, I want to give you a bit of flexibility to let your creativity flow! You'll have to provide a wordmark for a new team based in one of the selected cities, for a particular league:

  • NHL: Cleveland, Houston, or Baltimore
  • NBA: Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, or Buffalo
  • MLB: Buffalo, Carolina, or Indianapolis

Read the requirements carefully!

Requirements

  • You must provide a colored wordmark and a black-and-white version of the same wordmark (not grayscale) on your submission.
  • The wordmark must show the name of the team and the city name.
  • You must incorporate an item that infers which sport the team will participate in. For example, it can be a puck for the NHL, a basketball for the NBA, a baseball for MLB... You get the idea.
  • You cannot use an existing/previous team name for the cities mentioned. So the Cleveland Barons, for example, cannot be used. Take some time to research your selection!

Deadline: Friday, June 12th, 11:59AM Eastern Time

Guidelines for submitting your entry

Failure to follow the guidelines could result in your entry being inadvertently (or intentionally) excluded from judging.

Entries must be emailed to logolympiad (at) gmail (dot) com prior to the set deadline. Subject line should be the event number (Ex: Event 1). Once you submit your entry, it is considered final.

Entries must be submitted as .jpg, .gif, or .png formats. The file name format of the submission is: event#_yourusername.extension (Ex: event1_pollux.png). The file must be attached to your email.

All final entries must be 1200x800 pixels with at least 100 pixels of white space at the bottom of the image. This means that your presentation has to fit in an 1200x700 pixels window (1200 pixels wide by 700 pixels high). I will NOT resize entries that are not properly done, so make sure it’s right.

The background of the entries should be solid white, unless otherwise specified. You must not use gradients, shadows, patterns, lines, etc. on your background.

Do not add any text, like labels, or images to your submission, unless otherwise specified. Do not add the team name, location, entry number, event type, etc.

Do not include your name or any other personal identifiers on your submission. Also, do not watermark your work. I will add a watermark to each entry before they get posted for judging. I will also provide each entry with a number. You are expected to keep the identity of your entry anonymous until the end of the event. If you think you know the identity of another designer, keep it to yourself. Anyone who exposes their identity or the identity of anyone else will be DQ’d.

You should receive an automatic reply once you submit your entry. If you don’t receive one, please PM me directly. If I see an issue with the format of your submission, I will contact you giving you a chance to resubmit. I will NOT, however, comment on the content of the submission.

I understand that we cannot use any name that this city or region has carried in any sport, right? For example, I can't use the name of a former Cleveland baseball team for a Pittsburgh basketball team. Right?

Using my example above, you could use the Barons name for a team in Pittsburgh. Would it make sense? That I can't answer. I would suggest you check out the cities to see if the moniker might make sense.

So while you can't use a team name that has been used for city A, you could use that team name for city B, for the same sport or another sport.

Great.
Thanks for your answer 🙂.

I think the biggest challenge is your inability to explain what you're going for. So if I go with the "Chicago Blues" and make it Blues Brothers themed (as a pure example), you have to understand that's what I was going for, and I have to do it well.

Are the locations you listed the names we must use?  For example, we have to use Carolina not Charlotte and Indianapolis not Indiana, correct?

Yes, you must use the locations listed. So no Charlotte, no Indiana.

You said it perfectly. While explaining your choice would be easier, here you have to let your design speak for itself. If there is no real reason behind the name you choose, then it is easy to judge the design based on the execution. But if you add a level to it, just like your Blues Brothers theme for Chicago, and that you execute it in a way that the theme is now obvious, it would likely bring your design to the top of the list.

So we can't use previous names used in the city even if the league the team played in is defunct?

Exactly. Any team name used for that city, current or defunct, is off limit.

Just making sure, can we not use any names that have been used by only Big 4 teams in the area, or does it also include an extinct, say indoor soccer league team from the 90's, or a semi-pro baseball team, etc.

A safe rule is, if you google the name and it comes up, then you should think about another name, unless it brings a rec-level team.
