Racial Double Standard In Sports

so how is this from the NAACP website not racist?

To me the confederate flag was nothing more than a cool painting on top of the General Lee in Dukes Of Hazzard...

I am so tired of people complaining about what they deem to be offensive... I could care less about the Confederate Flag, I don't live in South Carolina... but I am sure to most South Carolinas the confederate flag IS NOT a symbol of racism and hatred, but more a symbol of state pride...

no....it's a symbol of hatred and racism....and a failed effort to retain the right to slavery.

i say that as a south carolinian.

ok... but WHY is it a symbol of hatred and racism?

Because a group of people equate it to times of slavery?

I saw a great T Shirt once that had a confederate flag on it and related to the whole Malcom X surge of the mid 90s.. it said "You wear your X, I'll wear mine".

Again.. I could care less about the confederate flag... but why is that a symbol of hatred and racism and other popular Black Symbols (like the Black Fist) are acceptable?

I do not challenge your thought... I am just curious as to why it is a symbol of racism and hatred..

What is up with you and racism??

because it is a fact of life....

Black People and other minorities have played the "race card" for years... so why shouldnt I, as a white person not be able to question the same things that for years were questiond by other races.

To pretend that even in this day and age race is not an issue would just be turning a blind eye.

I am not racist, nor have I ever felt to be the victim of racism... however to say that double standards do not exist would be wrong.

I think people should make themselves more concious of race issues and become more knowledgeable... I think only than can we (as a whole society) begin to move forward and get past race issue.

Why is it black comedians can do all the white jokes they want, but if a white comedian makes fun of blacks... it's an issue...

Hey, I am all against racism and bigotry, but I think I should be able question issues of race just as much as anyone who is a different race than I have been for many years.

wait im confused, are you white, black, asian, hispanic, or what? Sry but now im really not sure

At one point the Swastika was a Native American symbol of good luck. Not anymore.

But once any symbol is used as propaganda in instances of bigotry, hatred and even genocide, it's very difficult to erase the connection from the memories of victims and others who don't want to relive its horror.

Brian you seem to be obsessed with this idea of White inferiority.

Yes, there is a double standard. OK? Glad someone finally said it?

But the same reason the NAACP exists is the same reason there's NOW, GLAAD, and other organizations like them. Obvious reasons. They were all being shortchanged in society for who they were, in times when discrimination was acceptable. They probably still feel that way, and until one member of those groups holds the Oval Office, they'll keep on fighting the cause. More power to them.

It would be all grand and dandy when people will get jobs and housing and stuff all based on ability and need, and not because of race. I don't know when it will happen. But until there is an organization that helps to promote the White race that isn't associated with bigotry and hatred, you're going to be lumped in with all the hatemongers and Klansmen.

That T-Shirt is rediculous.

You could argue that the Malcom X stuff did not send a message to whites and you could argue that the rebel flag in and of itself is not utilized to send a message to blacks

But that T-Shirt is, at least in my opinion, saying ":censored: you N***ers" (I remember a friend of mine told me about that one when he drove south several years ago. Glad to know it's still around <_<

I'll take a shot at your question though.

I'll honestly give a little more slack to a more oppressed group.

So you saw a black kid in the 1990s wearing an "X" shirt, I took it as someone that recognized that things were not right yet and his/her desire is to send the message that being complacent does not get it done.

The Confederate flag was flown because "That Lincoln is trying to take our n***ers" (even though slavery was not really Lincoln's issue at all). The south, from the little I have read and experienced, seems to have not quite gotten over losing the Civil War. And I view that flag as a big :censored: You to the north and federal government and their history of taking their slaves and integrating their schools against their will.

Now, I will not pretend to know what the reasoning of brandishing that flag is for all of the individuals that do it (though common sense tells me that if they were not sending a racial message, most would not want anything to do it), but to me it is a symbol of a backwards society clinging to slavery during the Civil War.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

LOL @ you using my first name like we know one another or something...

The Swastika is also big in Japanese culture... it is a symbol of luck. There was a whole big thing a few years ago with some of the Pokemon cards having swastikas on them.

Why do you say I am obsessed with this idea of White Inferiority? Because I made 2 posts about double standards? I never said whites are inferior nor do I believe that... I belive everyone is equal.

Thank you for your explanation on the foundation of the NAACP and GLAD... I think there is a need for them... But if there was a group to make sure white people were equally represented... there would be a problem with this.

It is real easy for some of you people to misinterpret what I say via an internet message board... and I am fully aware and understand that.... but just because I freely discuss an issue does not mean I am obsessed with something... it just means I think it is a good topic for discussion.

I am not glad that finally said there is a double standard... I already know there is, and many before you have already said there is....

What no one has been able to answer is WHY is there this double standard?

Isnt the whole point of the NAACP or GLAD equal rights for a particular group.... so why shouldnt there be a group strictly to ensure equality for the whites?

well than I apologize....

But the answer to your question was directly quoted in your own post from my post...

ya know this part that you quoted...

Black People and other minorities have played the "race card" for years... so why shouldnt I, as a white person not be able to question the same things that for years were questiond by other races.

Fair enough.....

Thanks for the thoughts....

I think the underlying message behind the T-Shirt is true..

Basically...

"Why do you get to deem what is support for you, but yet criticize what you interpet as hate from me?"

Does that make sense?

this should be simple enough, its because as hard as it is to see, its the way our society has made us. I mean look at all the Propaganda plop that has been fed to us our entire lives through TV, Radio, Newspapers and about a million other things every day.

Should it matter? The Internet is wonderful in that people can post thoughts without their race being a factor as to how their thoughts are interpreted.

I really can't get into the mindset of being someone that has any desire to wear or otherwise brandish that flag, so to me it does not make sense.

At worst it can be interpreted as I said ":censored: you N***ers"

At best, I could buy someone thinking that the X shirt is racist (given Malcom's views for most of his life) and "I can be racist too."

Not sure I fully follow along on this one....

I think the acceptance of the double standard comes primarily from guilt and fear.

Guilt in the sense (as some have mentioned) past history... people feel guilty for the past actions of other whites, such as slavery and holocaust....so they just accept it and dont really stand up for themselves and say "Wait a second... what happened sucks, but it had nothing to do with me!"

Fear in the sense, that I think the majority of whites are just afraid to come out and call BS because they are afraid they may be perceived as a biggot or racist... much as some of you may think that I am a racist or biggot or obsessed with race just because I want equality for myself as well as other races.

A month ago, a white woman was killed in NYC by a group of black people... and the media NEVER really pushed the whole race issue... but whenever a black person is killed or assaulted by a group of whites... race ALWAYS comes into play...

Can someone explain this one to me... "HATE CRIME"? Whereas I understand the origins of it.. being based on a crime against another with a negative thought towards their race, sex, age, gender, sexual preference.... why should that punishment be any more severe than a good old fashioned murder just because someone really pi$$ed you off?

I mean... arent all crimes of violence "hate" based... I just think that the penalty and punishment should be level across the board for a particular crime regardless of all those other issues that cloud the incident.

The only reason i asked is because im curious what a person of a different race thinks about this topic. This has been discussed in my history class earlier this year and we got pretty deep in discussionon on this topic, but the problem is that in my school there are 1100 students and about 10 are African American, and on top of that i have had one class in my three years of high school with someone of a different race than White or Hispanic so i dont really ever get to even hear the other side. thats the only reason, so thats why it matters. Im tired of just being exposed to one side of the argument

Sorry... I didnt mean "Do you agree with what I said", i meant it more as "did it make sense what I was saying...." as in could you understand what I meant...

I think this kind of represents what I was trying to say..

"At best, I could buy someone thinking that the X shirt is racist (given Malcom's views for most of his life) and "I can be racist too.""

But I meant it without the issue of being racist.

More like.... You can support your cause... why can't I support mine?

OK let me put itthis way, how many times have you turned on a TV and seen a sit com, a commercial, or a movie where a guy is talking and the response is "its because im black, right?" or something like that.

Race comes into play in the media for the same reason this topic has so many hits so fast...

Because a hate crime is also a threat and intimidation towards all members of the victimized group, in addition to the crime against the invididual. Essentially, it is terrorism.

>Guilt in the sense (as some have mentioned) past history... people feel guilty for >the past actions of other whites, such as slavery and holocaust....so they just >accept it and dont really stand up for themselves and say "Wait a second... what >happened sucks, but it had nothing to do with me!"

All the talk of "this has nothing to do with me" is an instructive example in my opinion. No one is blaming any current individuals for the wrongs of the past, it is not a matter of personal blame or guilt. All people of all races should have a respect, reverence, and acknowledgment of the evils that have been done in the past. It reminds me of a discussion with a close friend who is a white guy about the US apologizing for slavery - he said why should I apologize, I didn't do anything - well it's not you that would be apologizing, it is the United States and society as a whole. Just as it is the US and society as a whole that should feel guilt and reverence for slavery and civil rights atrocities. Sometimes I think a mentalilty that "United States, American society," "the white man", and "white individuals" are the same thing leads people to interpret things as a blaming them individually.
