Nike's Next Victim..... Montana Griz

Since they've already dumped the Miami shoulder stripes on your Griz, it can't get too much worse...

I don't get Nike. There are some teams that they seem to just destroy at will - Miami, Oregon, Va. Tech, now Arizona. Then there are others that they tastefully modernize, like Clemson, Georgia and even the Michigan jerseys don't look bad (it's the use of materials and seems in awkward places that make them look goofy). Nike did a very tasteful redesign for William & Mary last year in all sports that is very traditional to the point of being bland. And what they did for UNC (at John Bunting's request) actually removed certain elements that had been added during the Mack Brown years (drop shadows, more and more navy striping) and reverted back to the plainer uniforms of the '70s and '80s.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Granted it's a small pic, but I actually like that Montana uni. At least what I can see...

I tend to agree with you, not caring much for the Nike redesigns you've listed. As you mentioned, there have been some overhauls that don't venture into such "creative" territory and I like them much more than, say Miami or Arizona.

My question though is this: Don't the athletic departments and ultimately the administrations of these schools have a say in the design? For instance, I wonder if the William and Mary athletics department and/or administration clarified some strong parameters at the beginning of the design process?

Now as much as I'd like to cast Nike as the face of uniform design evil, the ultimate responsibility lies with the school. Nike may develop the concept, but the school gives the stamp of approval and signs the check.

RB's right - the school that signs the check to Nike is ultimately responsible for what they wind up buying.

But... very few schools are in a position to really dictate to a behemoth like Nike. The biggest revenue generators, like UNC, can tell Nike what won't fly more readily than an relative upstart like Utah. (But they even managed to talk the Heels into those hideous basketball jerseys with the logo replacing the school name. Ugh.) It seems that in many cases, schools trade their input for the perceived bump they get by being a "Nike school".

I think Nike is fairly careful about which school to tamper with - leaving more traditional schools like Georgia and Clemson with more traditional looks because that's what would sell to those school's fan bases, and getting more progressive with schools like Miami and Oregon. Which makes the choices of Utah and Montana interesting, because they strike me as more traditional schools and fan bases.

To think, I would be more interested in this if I hadn't moved to Florida. Dad had two job offers ... one in Florida and one in Montana. He took the job 2 and 1/2 hours from his alma mater. :D GO NOLES!
