Mets Land Wagner

The Mets have landed coveted closer Billy Wagner in a four-year deal worth $43 million.

The deal could be worth as much as $50 million as it includes a fifth-year option for the Mets worth $10 million. But if the team declines the option, Wagner gets a $3 million buyout which is considered part of the original $43 million deal.

Wagner was 4-3 with 38 saves and a 1.51 ERA last season for Philadelphia, which wanted to re-sign him. After spending most of his career with Houston, his two seasons with the Phillies showed the left-hander he could handle pitching in a tough city.

"I think if I had an opportunity to play in New York four or five years ago, I probably wouldn't have been as receptive to it," Wagner said last week. "After the trade of going to Philadelphia and playing there, I believe that's made it that much easier to handle the media, the pressures."

Before the signing, the Phillies had already targeted Yankees set-up man Tom Gordon as a possible replacement for Wagner.

Looks like it could be a good year for the Mets....or it could turn into the year they got Burnitz, Alomar, Vaughn, etc.

Still need to address the catcher issue, but I'm confident they can do they.

If a trade for Soriano could happen, it would be the topper for their infield. Delgado, Soriano, Reyes, Wright? Pinch me at the thought.

Looks like Philly needs a closer now, since obviously Urbina's not going to be around this year. Gavin Floyd's not really closer material in my opinion.

Yea, I don't really think Floyd could get it done for a whole season for Philadelphia. They need one other guy that can do the job.

Every time the Mets add more and more, we all get excited. After every missed playoffs, we get excited for the offseason so we can use another 150 million and buy some more players. They come to the Mets and are never the same. Then the team misses the playoffs again and we wait for another offseason...

That's the risk of getting Delgado and Wagner for how long they are. Wagner got an option for a fifth year! By that time, there is absolutly no way he will still be a prductive closer.

I cannot wait for the day when the Mets' offseason pick-ups truly work and are almost worth the money they paid.
