amare32
I noticed the above picture on Baseball America. It looks like Mike Pelfrey is wearing a mouthpiece of the sort worn by football players and boxers. Anyone know why? I've never seen a baseball player w/ one of these. lilgump
My first guess would be its bubblegum. The World Basketball Championship, the Davis Cup, Ryder Cup, Iraq: Every day there's further proof that we, as a nation, are not very good at international competition. speedy
he probably bites down on his tounge during his pitching motion, and wears that to prevent any damage. just a guess, but seems logical.

illini1
I remember a long time ago in the playoffs when Roger Clemens wore one. It was when he played for the Red Sox and they were playing the A's I believe.

njmeadowlanders
He wears it because he would stick his tongue out during each pitch. This prevents that habit.

I guess there are varying degrees of TMJ that might require it, I suppose. A large cheese pizza, just for me.New England's source for soccer newsAnd hey, I made it to ESPN! njmeadowlanders
These are the 2 best I have of his tongue sticking out. There are definately ones where it is further out than that.
mets1989
For some reason, i remember hearing something about him tipping his pitches with his tounge, maybe its to stop that?
metsfan
He has TMJ adn that is why he wears the mouthpiece. It is so that he does not hurt his jaw when he pitches.Pelfrey wore a mouth guard in college to protect the tongue, but the one he wears now during games has another cause: Pelfrey has a misaligned jaw caused by getting struck with a line drive while pitching for Team USA against Japan two years ago. A dentist detected the problem in January.http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/436004p-367366c.html
