USC beats Arizona State 44-24, which moves UGA another spot closer to the Sugar Bowl....

I seriously have this haunting feeling that UGA (if they take care of business this week against that school downtown and beat LSU) could somehow luck into the Nat'l Championship. It would make total sense, the way this year has gone.

That being said, tomorrow's the Battle for the Golden Egg, 11:30 Starkville time...If we win, then we'll be playing in the holidays.

HAIL STATE! GO! STATE! GO STATE!

What do you mean, "if"? It's practically a certainty.....

If anything, I'd bet most Georgia fans are hoping for UT to win against UK. Then, the Sugar Bowl is all but wrapped up. Don't even bother with the SECCG.

I don't like this new Mark Richt. He's scary. Like his evil twin suddenly awoke and found new ways to win games.

...I officially hate sports right now. All my favorite teams know how to do is lay an egg. State is being dominated in the 4th quarter by the tune 14-0 to the worst team in the SEC...horrendous.

EDIT: Correction: MSU is not even playing this game today. I refuse to believe that Ole Miss is winning this game based on what they're doing. It's horrible, how bad we look. :(

Please tell me you say Sly Croom crying with emotion at the end and carrying the flag down the field.

I saw it, and me being a contagious crier, I almost welled up after going ballistic. OH, HOW I WISH I WAS THERE!!! This was better than the

if only because of what this means to the program. This win basically means that we are almost guarandamnteed a bowl game, and now we are back to a level of respectability.

OMG WHAT A COMEBACK!!!

Meanwhile, Colorado put up 65 on Nebraska. The Buffs won 65-51. Bill Callahan just called U-Haul as I type this.

At least they didn't give up 76.

And in other news, Darren McFadden still wants the Heisman. He's currently tearing up the #1 team in the country.

If there were a playoff for the I-A national title like I-AA (sorry, I refuse to call them their official NCAA names and will call them I-A and I-AA), it would be tough to pick against USC winning it all. USC really looked good against ASU.

A playoff just doesn't work for college football.

you're right. i forgot that the bcs system is used by every division in college football. in fact, this system works so well, that its never debated, never doubted, never confusing, never causes any problems, and is the only way to generate millions of dollars because, when you get right down to it, that's the most important part...oops, did i say that last part out loud?

...they both come in as virtual locks for the playoffs and Lloyd Carr and Jim Tressel treat us to watching the JV versions of the teams because they don't want to risk injuries. It happens in the NFL every season. Add a playoff to college football and there will be years where the SEC title game is nothing more than glorified scrimmage. So to answer your question, would I care about the OSU-Michigan JV game? Probably not.

lets take your UNC-Duke basketball rivalry as an example to why this argument doesn't work. unc and duke make the playoffs almost every year (in fact i can't think of a time where neither was in the playoffs, and i'm too lazy right now to look it up), but that rivalry is one of the most historic well-known and well-played rivalry in college sports. look it up and ask Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty what happens when you can't beat Duke and you don't win a national title. so with their jobs on the line, do you think Tressel and Carr would allow a JV squad to decide the game even if they were guaranteed a playoff spot? doubtful. you still have to beat at least 3 other teams who are just as hungry as yours for a national title. so no, you wouldn't care about the osu-michigan jv game, but that's not what would happen. keep in mind that there are still tv networks broadcasting the game. you think school admins, alums, and boosters are going to allow coaches to put on a half-assed show for a national audience? second point, duke and unc are in the same conference. in basketball that means they play TWICE a year. every college football rivalry is played only one time a year, which brings back up the meaning of the game. if you only see them once, you have one chance to prove you're the better team. and if you say 'oh well, we'll beat them in the playoffs then' lets look at osu-michigan last year taking the bcs rankings from the end of the season if there were a 16 team playoff: osu would get rutgers, michigan (at #3) would get #14 Virginia tech at the bottom half of the bracket, meaning they would have to get through vt, the winner of wisconson/notre dame, then have to beat either florida, wake forest, oklahoma or auburn to see osu again, all assuming that osu has beaten rutgers, taken out the winner of usc/boise state, and beaten either louisville, arkansas, lsu, or west virginia to make it osu-michigan for a national championship. not so simple a task.

btw, how often does a team that rested its starters at the end of a season win a title?

If Division 1-A did go to a playoff system, there is more incentive on "just getting wins" instead of "quality wins", and the big schools would go back to scheduling a strictly-soft non-conference schedule. There's no way in hell they'd risk giving up a sure-win just to schedule a tougher opponent, since the emphasis is just on collecting wins. Georgia wouldn't schedule the likes of Oregon, Colorado, Arizona State, and Louisville if the BCS weren't around. They would want to bring in the Sun Belt and ACC teams to ensure the easy victory.

assuming that the criteria for getting into the playoffs would mean just getting to seven wins to be eligible, then yes that would be a problem. hopefully, whoever would set up the system would have more sense than taking things like margin of victory, human votes, computer votes, prestige, and whatnot. i mean, come on, nobody wants to see a mediocre team in post season play? <_< ...sarcasm aside, teams schedule cupcakes now. look at texas' non conference schedule. or ohio state's or oklahoma's. the only team i know of to play a tough non conference schedule year after year is USC and i think that's in part because nobody really gives the pac 10 a lot of credit for having good teams. face it man, teams schedule cupcakes because they want to make sure that they have a certain number of wins at the end of the season (7 to be bowl eligible this year). it'll happen regardless of the system. besides, its not like scheduling a cupcake team guarantees you a win (see term: "upset").

With a playoff system, only 16 teams get additional exposure. With the current bowl structure, 64 teams get additional exposure. The smaller schools and smaller conferences would get less exposure because they'll likely get left out of the playoff picture, or just one team sneaking in every now and then.

if we're talking additional exposure as national spotlight after the regular season, then yes you're right if there are no other games being played (i can't see bowls ever going away even with a playoff, there's too much money involved and schools would love to get into them to get some of it). if we're talking overall, we're talking the big six plus the best of the mid-major conferences should they put up a good enough season getting national attention for at least a week before the playoffs would start, and then an additional week for the actual games. boise state last year wouldn't have been a complete unknown (damn near everyone knows about the blue turf they play on) until their bowl game because they would have been talked about as playoff contenders WEEKS before the playoffs started. that means that people would look at their conference a little closer, the teams in that conference, and know who the hell they were before they arrived and shocked the world. it doesn't happen so much in basketball because there are 65 teams who've played somewhere between 22 and 31 games that season. its just too much to look at for a fan.

Not to mention that, if these playoff games are played at neutral sites, how difficult it will be to sell tickets for a game that's only a week away, instead of having 2-3 weeks or more to plan trips like the bowl system offers.

It's a big game. Big football games don't need much to get people interested.

to add to infrared's no-look pass, you know people would make it happen to see their team compete for a title. march madness doesn't seem to have a problem with ticket sales.

Boy the Delware State - Delware game was a snooze fest. I spent all week getting excited for the playoffs, and this is what I get?

What's the over-under on # of OT's needed to play this out? I mean, Arkansas has a knack for playing marathon football.

I'll give you at least three. Anything else and we'll see basketball scores.

Personally, I wish they would go for two instead of tying the game. Grow some balls, man! Go for the win!!
