FC Gold Pride

The Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) franchise representing the San Francisco Bay Area has unveiled a name and logo. The team will be known as FC Gold Pride. The logo is...

pride-logo-200.jpg

What an abysmal effort - or, rather, lack thereof. The team name is a mash-up of two disparate elements. Either pick Gold (to recognize the region's role in the Gold Rush of 1849) or Pride (to tie-in to the idea of a pride of lionesses)... but, for crying out loud, choose one. As for the logo, it looks like it was designed by the president of a high school art club to adorn a yearbook cover (circa 1982).

Frankly, this a classic example of an ownership group failing to recognize that the branding of a professional sports franchise should be handled professionally. Invest the time, money and effort to do things correctly.

You didnt even touch on the third meaning. "Pride" has another meaning in san francisco, and specifically in womens athletics. im not trying to be cheeky either. if there is a gay/lesbian connotation, i think that would be pretty cool for a sports franchise

According to the press release accompanying the unveiling, there is no such connotation to the team's name.

The team name, Pride, was selected by owners Brian and Nancy NeSmith and is derived from the reference to a group of lions. A lioness, prominently featured in the team's black and gold logo serves as an icon for the team's qualities of teamwork, strength and skill. Lioness are the providers of the pride and are often seen as the pinnacle of hunting prowess. Each lioness has a specific role within the group and work as a team to serve the greater good of the pride.

Additionally, the press release reveals that the club name is FC Gold, with Pride serving as the team's official nickname. Hence, FC Gold Pride.

Well, I never thought anything would make me long for the Bay Area CyberRays, but here we are.

Ridiculousness of the name aside, look at that wordmark for five seconds, and you'll wonder how anyone in their right mind decided that looked finished.

If Pride is merely the nickname, why is the actual team name (FC Gold) so tiny on the logo compared to PRIDE.

Not awful, but still pretty bad.

Go Gators. Go Blue Raiders. Go Commodores. Go USC Trojans.

Preds & Avs.

Braves, Rays, & Dodgers.

Titans, Colts, Broncos, Cardinals.

Grizzlies. 14ers, Jam.

Team Spirit + Laziness = Yay.

Ha, you beat me to it, fellow Brian. I got their press release earlier this week, and threw up a little bit in my mouth when I saw it.

I'm all about women's soccer, but c'mon - if you want the audience to take it seriously, don't dish out this half baked logo and then expect us not to puke in our own mouths.

Besides...FC Gold Pride? Really? That doesn't sound forced at all. :upside:

Not awful...much worse. Like worse than Austin Aztex awful.

This looks like it was traced from a clip-art coloring book or something. Yeesh and a half.

It's amazing how the more you look at that logo, the more basic, mind-blowing flaws you see with it. The perspective is just a cavalcade of fail. Check out the legs. The lion looks as if it only has a right front and left rear leg. And the left ear actually seems to be growing off of that single rear leg. And then there's the tail, which varies in thickness like a squiggle, and curves unnaturally around the outline of the soccer ball.

We rip on a lot of stuff here. But absolutely unmitigated crap like this puts the flaws of other designs in perspective. This would get laughed out of the Concepts forum straight into the Graveyard.
