Illustrated NFL

One day, I was trying to look for some information about the late David Boss and NFL Properties in general, and I came across this:

Illustrated NFL

Enjoy!

Great site. When I was a kid, I had the clock made with this illustration:

I'm not a kid any more, but what does that matter? Here's my framed Dave Boss Saints poster from '66:

One thing I love about it is how the unis obviously hadn't been finalized (these were done a year before the Saints came into the NFL), so he painted what they thought the Saints would be wearing. The result is more of a concept that's close but not identical (differences are the FDL, single helmet stripe, & sleeve stripe colors reversed). The facemask must have been gray but it sure looks white on the poster.

The next uniform update the Saints make should probably include some cues from this look...absolutely frickin' beautiful.

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

That's cool about the source pics. Must have used somebody else's pic for Archie's print too. Would have been tough to find a game action shot of that poor bastard standing upright. :D

I'm sure a lot of football fans who have these prints are still unaware of the posters use of players that weren't on the respective teams as source material.

It's pretty interesting to see how the artists used action shots in the artwork, like these for example:

I thought something looked strange about Staubach's stance, then I realized the picture is mirrored.

In the last 1990s I worked for a collectibles company that had the rights to release NFL collector's plates. We did a little bit of "creative" art by taking an existing piece of painted art featuring John Elway and repainted it with the updated Broncos uniform... nothing else in the art changed, however
