Brian in Boston Posted April 20, 2004 Share Posted April 20, 2004 While today was the legal holiday of Patriots' Day in Massachusetts and Maine (as well as a "Special Observation Day" in Wisconsin), the holiday is NOT also known as Evacuation Day.Evacuation Day is observed in Suffolk County, Massachusetts on March 17th each year. It marks the withdrawal of British troops from Boston on March 26, 1776. The more cynical amongst us might wonder why the date of observance has been moved forward nine days... where it coincides with St. Patrick's Day... in a city known for its large Irish-American population.
