From the JAL press release:

The motif that will be used is of a soaring Japanese red-crown crane with its wings extended in full flight - an auspicious icon of Japan representing the high spirits of the Japanese people and their sensitive attention to detail. First registered as a trademark of Japan Airlines in August 1959, the circular crane mark was painted on the entire fleet during the period of JAL?s international network expansion. It stayed a main feature of the JAL livery for more than 40 years and became an unmistakable image representing Japan Airlines and the country it connected the world with. Bearing this mark on its aircraft, JAL displayed the uniqueness and progress of Japan to the world and it often invoked a sense of pride and familiarity in many Japanese as well as its loyal customers.

For reference, the current logo and livery:

Major, MAJOR upgrade. The crane will return them to a much more classic and distinct identity compared to what they have currently.

Take the old DC-8 era scheme, go all white, erase the cheatline and push "Air" and "Lines" together*...

Not sure it's that much of an upgrade - I'm not much of an all white fuselage fan - but the logo is more identifiable as JAL than the more nationalistic 'meatball.' Not to mention the not-so-fond memories some may still have of it...

* Trivia - What U.S. carrier still uses "Air Lines" instead of "Airlines"?

Seems like an upgrade to me.

That would be Delta.

Damn, beat me to it. I actually like DL's use of "Air Lines". Not really sure why though.

Yep, Delta, though you wouldn't know it based on how most of the media ignoramuses even here in ATL call them Delta Airlines.

How did I never see the goofiness of their current design? It says JAL - Japan Air Lines - but the titles right next to the JAL say Japan Airlines. DOH!

Looked up a photo of the real plane to confirm it.

On a (semi-)related note, I miss the AA silvertails. The 727s were the last model AA had with polished tails. They all have the composite tails now (plane at adjacent gate) and it really downgrades a fantastic look.

The WORST Standard livery currently in use internationally- in the united states, it's definately this:

How many Southwest planes still use the old livery? I think that most have now been repainted in the newer livery, right?

(Notice how the winglet's paint scheme matched the tail's, cool!)

May God bless you all and fill your hearts with faith, hope, and love!
