Belfast Giants form all new team The Belfast Giants players and staff have departed the club en masse - and re-signed to a new company amid a row with the owner, it has emerged.In a dramatic development for the ice hockey team, the Odyssey Trust which operates their home venue has moved against American investor Christopher Knight over "major issues".Knight bought a 90% controlling share from long-term owner Jim Gillespie last November - for a reported £145,000 - but has now been left owning a club with no players or venue.The players have signed up to a new company intending to keep the Belfast Giants name and remain at the Odyssey, but under a new management regime.http://www.u.tv/Spor...4e-88c342ba84dbThe trust offered to purchase the Giants' assets from Mr Knight - apparently for the £145,000 he had invested - but no deal was reached by last Friday - the deadline set by the trust. At that point the trust terminated the holding agreement - a move which meant the company owned by Mr Knight - Belfast Giants (2008) Ltd - could no longer play at the Odyssey Arena.Within hours of that, the players wrote to Mr Knight claiming that their contracts were no longer in effect. Perhaps in some ways for the better.There's gotta be some kind of trademark infringement if the players and management are calling their new team the Belfast Giants.I believe that the owner bought the team but not the name and identity, that remained with the operators of the arena.
