I'm a casual baseball observer, but it feels like the Padres keep getting the best guys on the open market. Shouldn't they be better?

You can kinda say that about both the Padres AND the Dodgers. They’ve collectively spent a head spinning amount of money in the past ten years and only have one measly COVID tournament ring to show between the both of them. I can’t imagine spending that kind of money for nearly zero championship success. Sort of makes the whole thing feel fruitless. Dime store Warriors :censored: going on in baseball.

  2. I’m honestly kind of baffled that people are so surprised/outraged by the lightness of all of this. If we’ve learned anything over the past decade it’s that money is always going to protect money, and :censored: everything and everyone else. It’s the only thing that matters not just to the NFL, but to the vast majority of American culture. Even the good that’s done is most often done with the ulterior motive that it’ll help profit margins in the long run.

Just look at the Calvin Ridley suspension. He got absolutely dumptrucked for something completely innocuous in comparison to the Watson thing, but the difference is that it broke the one rule the NFL really has. Don’t :censored: with the money. As long as you avoid that, you can do anything you want. You can rape and beat women, steal from charitable organizations, discriminate based on race/class/sex/etc, you can even murder someone and face only the lightest scrutiny for it. These are all things the NFL has in their somewhat recent past. We know this to be true. But :censored: with the money? That’s the real sin, according to the NFL.

The NFL is nothing more than a microcosm of our completely rotten to the core culture.

  3. I went through a lot of bull :censored: working for that dumb little team. That being said, I couldn’t be any more proud of what those guys have been able to do. That club is resilient as all hell, and I hope this can help them right the ship a bit for the long term. They absolutely deserved better than how they were treated for many years by many different groups. I’m really glad to see that club and that city have something tangible to celebrate.

Juneau to Marin County, coastline to mountains by the most generous definition

That’s part of the Coast Ranges, which is technically separate from the Cascades. That would also put a decent chunk of the Sierra Nevada in the PNW, which just feels awkward. Boundary line between the Sierra and the Cascades falls somewhere around Lake Almanor, which is about 250 miles north of Marin County.

California, particularly the part of the state north of the Bay Area/Sacramento/Tahoe corridor is deceptively enormous. Part of the state does fall in the PNW IMO (even if it technically just misses it), but not the part that anyone pays attention to.

In a weird twist, it looks like the Bengals' new white helmet will be paired with their 2016–2020 Color Rush uniforms.

Wow, this is really strange. The NFL went from being so darn strict on their branding requirements, and seemingly in one off season the whole dam has burst. There were a few random hints that there were cracks here and there (Ravens unexpected alt pants come to mind, both purple and gold. Browns surprise orange pants, etc), but it’s pretty incredible to see all of this relaxed so quickly.

I kinda feel like the same thing happened with the NBA. Strict to the point where they didn’t even want the manufacturers logo in the game unis, only to flush all of that away the minute Nike took over. Took the NFL a lot longer, but it’s fascinating how much all of this has changed in the past few years.

The rain shield of the Cascades has a bigger effect on climate than the Pacific on the other side. I mean, this is eastern Oregon:

Not my mental picture of the PNW. That's just standard-issue Mormon country, like Idaho, which itself is like Utah.

Yeah you get a pretty similar effect down further south with the Sierra Nevada mountains (which I still get confused as to how it’s not considered an extension of the same range, but I digress).

  7. There’s a concept floating around the internet that uses the back plumage of the Cardinal head as the helmet decal, and where the bird’s face would normally be is just the opening in the helmet where the player’s face is. It sounds goofy, but damned if I wouldn’t like to see that. It really wouldn’t be all that different from what the Eagles, Rams, and Vikings are currently doing.

Idaho in the Pacific Northwest is one of those things I've never gotten. Spokane isn't even really in the Pacific Northwest; how is the entire state of Idaho, which has more in common with Utah than it does with anything west of the Cascades? Dumb.

I would probably consider Idaho part of the PNW but only because of the impact the Pacific Ocean has on the weather. It generally stays warmer than the states to the east due to the proximity to that PNW swell, but it’s still admittedly a bit of a stretch. Really, only half of the state is in that region.

Montana, though? Never. Not sure why that whole region is ever lumped in with the west coast.

  9. All these new throwbacks being released has me a bit frustrated that teams like the Seahawks and Buccaneers decided to wait another year to bust them out. Seems like there really isn’t much of an excuse other than a total lack of motivation on their part.

The addition of Warren Smith adds credibility to any soccer bid, so it will be a huge surprise if this doesn't succeed.

My former boss and one of the best people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work for. He was absolutely vital to both Sacramento Republic and San Diego Loyal existing today, not to mention all he did to help the RiverCats get the stadium in South Sac. New Orleans is in VERY good hands.

Dame just signed a $60M/year extension no other team could offer him. That's why.

Yeah, I appreciate Lillard wanting to stick with the Blazers, but his recent comments about it all have been a bit eye rolling. Sure everyone else is goofy for “ring chasing”, but the dude just inked a deal that’s going to pay him $60 million a season. It’s not like that was a hard choice.

I own that hat, as a Cardinals fan, but I hate it and wish that they would stop using it. It changes the look of the home uniform so much by making everything...darker. Just my opinion. Then again, I'm one of the rare people that only wants the home red hat for all 162 games.

TBH that’s why I like that particular hat so much. It goes with the home set almost as well as the red cap does, and really shows off the versatility of that home uniform set. It’s nice because it feels like the Cardinals have an entirely different alt set without even changing the home uniforms, which are iconic enough. It kind of gives you the best of both worlds.

I bet Cal would seriously think about it but they spent too much on renovating Memorial Stadium to just get rid of football now. That's really the main issue with dropping football, what do you do with the massive stadiums that every school in the conference has invested millions into in the past 10 years? Stanford has a enough money probably to just tear it down and not care but everyone else has spent way too much money to just stop now.

Ironically, UCLA is the only one that could easily drop football since they don't have a stadium to worry about, that ain't happening now though.

Yeah this is exactly it. Cal has NEVER liked actually fielding a football team, it seems. There have been talks for decades about how necessary that expense is. But what do you do now that you’ve invested all of that money? Bad optics to cut it at this point, but give it 10-20 years. It’ll probably be less painful of a loss by then.

And you’re point about UCLA is spot on, too. It would be such an easy drop for them, and outside of UCLA grads, nobody would care.

  14. The sunk cost already invested tells me that they’re going to eventually have to do something, but I’m not sure if the toxic waste dump they were talking about originally is going to be feasible for anyone, tbh. There’s a reason that section of land has sat unoccupied for over a century.

  15. I’m starting to wonder if these moves are going to compel some of the bigger schools to eventually do something that’s probably completely surprising to all of us right now and just cut their football programs altogether. Like, how much enthusiasm does a school like UC Berkeley really have for football? Could an institution like Colorado look at the numbers and think they may be better off spending their limited sports money elsewhere? I know out west at least in places like the Bay Area there is basically nothing coming from people other than apathy on the recent PAC 12 moves. Why bother keeping something so expensive when you can’t even fill your stadiums for games against teams like Notre Dame (Which I’ve seen at Stanford games)?
