  1. Word on the streets is that the Boston NWSL official announcement and formalization of their White Stadium vision will be happening before end of the month. Don't hold your breath for a return of the "Breakers".
  2. Nottingham Forest got a new shirt sponsor. Shame as I was looking forward to this current Chelsea vs Forest match as a rare throwback no-sponsor match. At least it's still a battle of surprisingly good ex-New England Revolution keepers, sorta...
  3. In fairness I think you're going to get this Messi-chaser ratio at every away game the guy plays...
  4. I used to have one of these but got rid of it; it was nice for cold-weather outdoor exercise, sorta, but not quite breathable enough. And in normal life I always wanted it to have a kangaroo pocket, which I guess brings me to my point with these things, which is that they're like a hybrid of a hoodie and a track jacket and a sweater, but without the practical or style benefits of any of them. Terrible garment, may this become a marker of 2010s fashion in the bin.
  5. Seemed to me last couple seasons that every team had maybe 3 or 4 tops to pick from (some combo of polos and quarter-zips, some combo of team color/heather grey/black/navy) and were always noticeably wearing coordinated pants too (khaki or grey or black chinos, I think). I guess the only slobby thing about it is the inherent dorkiness of the tops on offer, the coaching staff does at least stay coordinated. Anyway, they haven't seemed to coordinate with the players' uniforms ... yet.
  6. I always thought the ties-to-school thing was more about doing the thing the pros do because it's fun for the kids, another thing to play into the fantasy of being a big-time "real" athlete, not because it's actually like a serious thing. That's probably giving too much credit to the self-unaware meatheads who run kids' sports though. (Don't ask me, I was a track athlete and we were too busy hotboxing the locker room to be coming up with dress codes for away days.)
  7. I would like to think there's a middle ground here. I would at least prefer coaches to wear a cool jacket, whether they channel their inner European soccer coach fashion guy or even just the Mike Tomlin bomber jacket (Nikefied, natch). The NBA coaches wearing the goofy polo shirt (are those even Nike, or some grim men's outlet mall shop?) or the world's most unflattering garment the quarter-zip has gotta go. (It's also exceptionally dorky looking that the whole coaching staff wears the same "coach" uniform.) Though nothing they've done will be as bad as Nike deciding that the United States men's coach will be wearing a t-shirt in the friggin WORLD CUP of all stages. The guy's hype sneaker collection doesn't bother me... but my god, the t-shirts. A far worse offense than benching that Reyna brat.
  8. Does Pittsburgh have a Barstool bro they can poach for "lifestyle" podcasts and YouTube videos? Are we ready for a dating reality show for Pens fans? Will a standalone app for their games streaming be prohibitively expensive to make sure nobody actually buys it?
  9. Finally the Red Sox were back as the number one story in Boston this weekend but only because Mookie Betts made his Fenway return. Justifiably he got an ovation every time anyone looked at him. It was cute how Alex Verdugo took that personally and hit back-to-back leadoff homers; still, Mookie got one back anyway and he's still beloved by fans here, the majority of whom never bought the conspiracy theories about his refusing to re-sign here. Hope old Sean doesn't get canned for a second time for speaking too much. A little shocked they booked him for this weekend's series instead of the dull sycophant Will Flemming, all things considered.
  10. No, wasn't Vilda, it was the head of the Federation. Though Vilda's always been a syncophant company man when Spain's federation has been at their worst before, so no surprise here.
  11. By media market size, Nashville is barely 20% the size of Chicago, so it's not like perfect Cubs/Sox equilibrium or anything near it is even necessary to stay viable.
  12. How did The Bear end up with its baseball team fandom being Boston, for some reason? Was that a plot point I missed in a show that otherwise written to not exist without Chicago as a main character?
  13. Were they given the option to join? I don't know either way. Seems on par for current MLS to say thanks for laying the groundwork while they shove you aside. But also on par for USL to be naive and stubborn and precious about it. So I dunno who's more to blame. Best color scheme, worst name. RIP Loyal.
  14. I mean, dispatching Jalen Rose never to be heard from again is fine with me, but what will it take to do the same with Shaq?
  15. Garber and his buddies can't thumb the scale as much for the Open Cup, so hey, crazier things have happened. Enjoyed the Apple TV clowns talking up Messi's 17th trophy or whatever as if the International Tournament of Cashgrab Friendlies Cup is really worthwhile. Feels like an icky path all of a sudden.
  16. Boston's schedule release video involved embroidering a bunch of hats with a bunch of alternate logos inspired by (but very unofficial) for the other teams in the league, then embroidered for the video itself. I have to say I'm surprised they were allowed to do this sort of thing, sorta legitimizing that off-brand merch that tiptoes up to the lines of copyright rules. And a bunch of Yupoong snapbacks instead of New Era?? https://www.nba.com/celtics/news/sidebar-081723-celtics-team-with-local-print-shop-artist-to-create-schedule-release-video
  17. The rule of City uniforms is that everyone will do a "graffiti" looking one at some point. I have to say I like what Miami did with the Vice look and Brooklyn did with the Basquiat (Though I still find the Basquiat jersey concept gross), and treating the City program as a chance to do related things with different changes over the course of a few years. Hope more teams try that rather than grasp at straws for something new every year. I think the Celtics could do a few more variations on that script logo/Futura numbers/green and gold look they had last year for the Russell tribute jerseys, Denver could play with that train station thing in a few more colors, etc.
  18. I mostly see blue smoke and I can sort of see some kind of icy pattern, but I'm struggling to see it as "lake water". Surprised we haven't seen more full-sublimated print styles like this in the modern NBA...yet. Since rebranding this team has trotted out so many "Minnesota" wordmarks that feel sorta similar, not similar enough to fit together but not different enough to fully embrace an alternate brand of the City program. The middle ground, can't-commit zone. Which is it?
  19. It must be something about the licensing deals on whomever is the team's "official" betting partner or whatever. I've seen and heard on local broadcasts the usual talent just switching between "regular" analysis to sponsored betting talk without obvious barriers. Feels insidious to me.
  20. I don't care to debate whether or not sports gambling should be legal, but the way it's been "regulated" in America has been a joke, at best. Licensure is a joke. Mixing gambling sponsored content with ostensibly neutral analysis is gross, letting the media rights carriers also be involved with the gaming is gross, platforms giving "free money" (wink wink) to get people hooked is gross. Gaming kickbacks to ESPN rub me the wrong way, but I guess it's actually less bad than all the RSNs who beat them to this particular punch...especially with so many of the RSNs being owned by teams themselves.
  21. Larger text for the world feed bug is welcome, though it still uses impossibly small text for the meta info like subs and such.
  22. And now it’s “Penn Entertainment” to boot, no mention of gambling anywhere in the corporate name, just good wholesome entertainment for all.
  23. Man United and Man City with pretty similar away kits on the year. Funny!
  24. Penn struck a deal with ESPN to finally put ESPN's name on a sportsbook, and in the process handed Barstool back to Portnoy for a couple legal documents. What a piece of business.
  25. Aha, you're right, and that jibes with the NYC Parks signage if this is an official "collab". In my mind those signs were green and gold too but I think I got it mixed up with Boston's parks.
