  1. Oh, no, no, no...the league will do just about anything coming to keep the Canes in Carolina, short of prioritizing them staying over Arizona. And this coming from someone who considers himself a Canes fan (who will follow the franchise wherever they go).
  2. Like the collective ego of the NHL Board of Governors and Gary Bettman.
  3. Their Twitter Dot Com account is pretty funny too, if you ask me.
  4. I know this is a 2-year-old thought, but I've had a similar idea...though this league of mine is largely based in southern Utah is a semi-pro-ish league, not unlike the Cache Valley-based Northern Utah League (the same league as where the Smithfield Blue Sox--apparently the longest continually operating baseball team in the state--play) I see the league founded in the late 1980s and playing out not unlike the Professional Hockey League (a fictional league with its history), with its own history involving cross-town and rivalries. I've had a few ideas for team names: - Cedar City Spadefoots: Named after the spadefoot toad, common in the Great Basin drainage where Cedar City lies. Possible Colors: Something like Dark Green, Jade Green - Kane County Marshals: Formerly the Kanab Marshals, this team merged with the Orderville-based Long Valley Settlers and changed their name to reflect being the sole team in Kane County. Have a Houston Astros-like emphasis on the star and rainbow-style guts, hailing from inter-city little league teams going by the "Tri-City Stars" moniker. Possible Colors: Red, Orange, White, and Black. - Panguitch Browns: Browns, as in brown trout, found in Panguitch Lake and various high-mountain lakes in Garfield County. Possible Colors: Brown, Light Blue, Orange. - St. George Roadrunners: Sure, why not just lift the GBL name and identity but tweak the colors? It works and is a great identity and seems to have started St. George's use of earthen hues like burnt orange in the city's marketing. Little league teams still occasionally use the moniker and the name could originate from St. George being one of the outlier in an older northern Utah-based league (hours on the road to the nearest team in Utah County) that broke off and was one of the founding members of the Canyon Country Baseball League (that could be a preliminary league name?) Possible Colors: Burnt Orange, Black, Yellow. - St. George Coyotes: The Roadrunners' cross-town rivals who was founded after a falling out within Roadrunners' management. Possible Colors: Navy, Maroon, Gold. - Beaver Broadcasters: Named after Philo Farnsworth, one of the fathers of television who was born in Beaver. I can think of their primary logo being like those old broadcasting globe logos with a baseball replacing the globe and the name matching the script often associated with these kinds of logos. Possible Colors: Royal Blue, White. - Festival City Emperors: Formerly the Cedar City Chiefs before management decided that they would re-brand themselves in order to avoid the Native American controversy to embrace Cedar City as "Festival City, Utah." Colors: Maroon, Lavender, Forest Green (possibly the most out-there identity in this set).
  5. Totally agreed. My initial point is that, as far as southern markets go, San Diego is near the top of the list. Houston, too IMO. Both cities have a rather extensive history of minor-league hockey despite their location and would be miles ahead of Phoenix and Las Vegas. But compared to Quebec? That's a no-brainer.
  6. You know what? I don't recommend most Sunbelt cities for the NHL but given their history with hockey and history of solid support (and with the right ownership/arena situation), I'd recommend San Diego (Houston too). Similar to Utah (though that's not a sunbelt locale), can't be any worse than Phoenix or Las Vegas...right?
  7. Maybe Salt Lake finds itself as #5 in the 5-city relocation sweepstakes of 2025, but given the history of this league, we all know Honolulu gets the team.
  8. So have they laid off Mike Golic too? I'm really looking forward to Mike & Mike. Either way, with the Golic/ESPN split, his son Jake tweeted this: Couldn't have said it better myself. EDIT: Apparently Golic will remain with ESPN, but he and Greenberg will split. Still, not a good look to spread your assets thin like that.
  9. I'll admit...I do (did?) like debate shows like PTI and Around the Horn, but that's because the people involved were actual sports journalists. There is (was?) definitely a level of professionalism that Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser (and the mishmash of reporters on ATH) that Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith lacked. But of course Skip and Stephen A. will be there long after anyone else I mentioned is gone.
  10. It seems as "Oh, Almost" applies to the majority of Utah-based teams. The Jazz's previous (and even current IMO) set is a shade of purple away (and a couple tweaks) from being great/long-lasting, BYU's a shade of royal(or even royalish) blue away from looking fantastic, Utah State needs to add serifs to their 1s (and bring back pants stripes for football), and so forth. That said, the Bees hit much closer to greatness than many of them, where the only swap is the cartoon Bee logo for the beloved interlocking "SL." (I, too, have a primarily yellow SL hat and it's excellent.) I've grown on the idea of the Bees introducing just a hint of, say, red to their color scheme for affiliate's. Maybe a silver (or to keep local flavor, copper) halo on the "Bees" B, but that's about it. I believe the original Bees (or the most well-known historical incarnation of them) were a Pirates affiliate IIRC, which leads to the very Pittsburgh-esque color scheme. Oh, and speaking of the Bees and special uniform nights, I so badly want one of those Gulls hats and/or jerseys (and we get to see Albuquerque Dukes uniforms too!).
  11. It'd be a shame to see this happen. I've always loved seeing Utah and Alaska play, as it has felt like the two have been rivals in the last few years.
  12. Coyotes: "We are committed to staying in Arizona." Glendale Star: "Then why were you looking at arenas in Seattle and Portland?"
  13. Excellent update, though my one criticism is not putting the awesome "Redbirds" script on the home uniforms (which would scream "Memphis baseball"). Everything else is excellent (and I love their take on the standing bird looking back logo).
  14. So, the Hurricanes are having issues with their ice; their game against the Red Wings has been delayed: So, when can this team move to Quebec?
  15. I didn't know the Rumble Ponies split games between Binghampton and New York.
  16. Well, to be fair, he was the best part of the Las Vegas Golden Knights name reveal conference, albeit as a heel to those who love hockey.
  17. After realizing that the Dock Spider is an actual thing, I'm fine with the name and logos (for the most part). It's not as refined as it can be, and I can do without the "DS" in the water (as if seeing a spider on a dock above water isn't enough to give you the idea), but it's not as contrived a name (*ahem* Rumble Ponies, Baby Cakes, etc.) as it first lets on.
  18. Since the Quebec Nordiques may yet be a few years away (if at all, thank you very much NHL BoG and Gary Bettman), I've done some digging up of their aesthetic history. While I'm perfectly fine with their iconic NHL look and would love to see it come back when (or if) the NHL returns to Quebec, there's something that just seems, i dunno, a tad off--namely, the lack of red. After seeing some of their WHA looks, from their initial, 1972-73 Light Blue/Red jerseys: to their darker blue mid-1970s uniforms: I've come to the conclusion that the Nordiques could've looked even better with a sprinkle more of red. First of all, if the NHL ever returns to QC, the inaugural 1972 powder blue/red uniform (the first picture posted) needs to make a comeback as an alternate/throwback/fauxback (perhaps with the shade of blue Quebec settled on when they entered the NHL). A lighter shade of blue uniform with red accents is something the NHL needs badly. (However, I'm not sure about its white counterpart, as that uniform does have a bit too much red.) As for the regular set? Something along the lines like this: but with the red outline on the numerals that the Nordiques actually wore, thin red stripes flanking both sides of the large white pants stripe, and of course the fleur-de-lises on the back. (Image yoinked from Hockey Jersey Concepts.) So basically? This might be perhaps one the most unexpected cases of "getting it right the first (couple) time(s)," as I'd love to get my hands on a replica 1972 Nordiques jersey. Don't get me wrong, I think the Nordiques' NHL uniforms are some of the best to ever grace NHL ice, but adding that little bit of red would've made it nigh untouchable.
  19. Albuquerque Isotopes is a great, fun name (and Casper Ghosts was too). Neither of them have adjectives, either. I wonder if there's any correlation...
  20. Over/under on the number of municipalities not named Tempe whose residents are present plead for the Tempe City Council to approve such a deal: 3 (bonus points if Glendale is among those represented).
  21. Anyways, it looks like they photoshopped the crown on all 4 logos (and flipping/rotating as needed), the two smiling baby face components also look eerily similar, and of course you have to have a triangular smirk (How does a baby already have a full set of chompers?) and mascot swinging a bat #becauseBrandiose. To be fair, the font for the wordmark is good, and there's at least some charm to having a baby mascot (and one with a big smile), but the lengths to which the team management and Brandiose went to make it happen is too much. By the way, wasn't there supposed to be a vote on the team name? What ever happened to that? Or did ownership decide, "Screw it, we'll go with Baby Cakes'?" And the Pelicans throwbacks are pretty awesome (especially the Black/Yellow one). Maybe someone should've been willing to throw enough money at Tom Benson to just go with that.
