  1. The helmets are kinda dumb, sure, but it's the white gloves that make me hate this.
  2. Seconded. Ads suck, but subscribing to content you enjoy for a pittance is more than fair.
  3. Word. Another nearby college had a radio situation like that which seemed kind of okay. The student-staffed school station I was at didn't have any of that. Mostly a few egos from people who were either trying desperately to be Kenny Mayne, Howard Stern, or Jim Rome. All of them ended up working for local media and are simple family people, which is fine. Kudos to them. None of them were particularly talented, but good for them for getting into the local biz and making a life out of it. I went to several Illinois conferences and radio/media get-together-ish things, met some names (the only ones that stand out were Ray Clay and a phone call with Mike North). It was mostly an excuse to rub shoulders, get drunk, hand out swag, and make mischief. Anyway, I didn't have a career in the industry, I don't know anything, and I'm just telling stories at this point.
  4. I was absolutely aspiring to be a journalist/radio reporter when I was in college, and worked at a local radio station briefly while taking journalism classes. The journalism classes were useful in that they informed everybody they'd be poor, their creative writing had no place in the world, and it's all about making connections and knowing important people. My radio courses were all about learning the software while several students had sex with the teacher who unceremoniously skipped town (and stole my guitar). While I worked at the radio station I got to observe a lot of people in their 30s/40s/50s all backstabbing one another and doing petty crap simply because it sent the flimsiest of messages. Needless to say, I didn't go into either field, so when pieces like this come up from those who, at least from a journalism/substack/written-form sect, "made it" into the career arcs of that industry, it's amazing to see these personalities who I got a brief snapshot of 15 years ago or so are still the apparent norm. Thus the fascination. It's not that he's wrong, necessarily, but when the curtain gets pulled back on these industry metaverses to reveal the petty and demeaning garbage-flinging, I can't look away.
  5. This is fascinating and reads like a terrorist manifesto.
  6. Don't go into the barstool subreddit. They're bathing themselves in glory.
  7. The Ducks just need to pick a lane. If you're going to use the D foot, fine, but get your together otherwise. Everything they are right now is a brand salad topped with bad 2010-ish uniform trends. The Capitals aren't far behind with the same sins.
  8. From what I saw of that guy's account I think he custom makes all of these, but I could be wrong.
  9. Saw this in a twitter comment. Why does this exist?
  10. I'm not sure I want to say "worse," but it's definitely its own flavor of stupid. Nagy testing positive for COVID is a non-surprise from an organization run by and populated with dopes.
  11. Some Bears thoughts since I rarely speak on them here. 1. Paying Justin Peters because you guessed wrong on Teven Jenkins' back is on Pace. Having Bars be worlds better than Simmons yet not serve as emergency starter at RT is on Nagy. Fields paid the price. 1a. Nagy wanted Bars to stay in his role as a floating blocker, but it was clear that Simmons doesn't belong on an NFL roster, much less starting at RT. Bars comes in & was at least useful, but it took the game collapsing & Fields getting crushed for that to happen. Bad look. 1b. The Bears are down Jenkins, Borom, Ifedi, & Wilkenson. Nagy's a middling-to-poor coach, but that's a hard road to walk. Mustipher's only passable (but growing) and Peters is doing well, but the line is a big part in the struggle to help Fields survive. Moving on. 2. Jaylon Johnson's net worth has gone down quite a bit as the season's gone along. He's good, but he isn't THAT good. Like the team he plays for, legitimate competition puts him in his place. 3. The Bears wideouts should be looking real hard in the mirror. Allen Robinson is dogging it after being tagged & Mooney's not standing out. Kmet is dropping passes, nobody is stepping up. The so-called weapons on this offense do not exist, & are all ultimately expendable. 4. Nagy is in over his head. I don't think he's a BAD coach, but the situation's spinning out of his control. The simple stuff - use of timeouts, clock management, dumbass penalties - he has never learned from his own mistakes, so why would Fields be any different? 5. Pace is going to be managing this team for another decade at least. I think the Bears ownership married the guy. He'll get another head coach, maybe two, and another rookie quarterback at least. Ryan Pace is the Ted Phillips of football ops. Get used to it. 6. Eddie Goldman's game hasn't returned, and may not ever come back. Akiem Hicks' body is nearly done with football. Nichols has regressed. The front 7 has some names, but they're not consistent, and that's being polite. 7. I'll say again, Roquan Smith needs an extension immediately. Don't pull some ARob with him. He's the future. You build around 58. 8. There's a fair bit riding on this 49ers game. The Bears will probably win, knowing Nagy's proclivity for surviving these games against lesser competition, but if he loses? That Pittsburgh MNF game was always going to be huge, but if they lose to SF? Beware. 9. The real "win" of yesterday was leaving a 38-3 loss with no additions to the injury report. Maybe the organization will learn from their COVID outbreak and get the entire football ops vaccinated already. If you want to win, prove it. 10. Lastly, culling Trestman comparisons up from the archive doesn't work. Completely different situation in both roster & personnel contexts. Trestman was Emery's hire & Emery was selected by a committee. Pace/Nagy are almost honorary McCaskeys by comparison.
  12. The modern Sharks logo blows because it's a cartoon character perfected by a marketing committee. It's like the Jaguars going to their new Jag head. It looks fine but it has no personality because it's generic. The wonky Jaguar and the derpy Shark are charming and grounded in their odd and unfinished nature. It felt unique, local, and more appropriate than the corporate blandness that radiates from these current designs.
  13. In my limited experience (x-perience?) with my xbox series s, I'd have to manually pull the update down for it to get the patch. But I mean, who cares? It all falls into the "we need to take action so we look good" thing, and chances are they'll break stuff in the process.
  14. I feel like resignation was justified. If you want to call it cancel culture, so be it, but this is a good case of actions having consequences, and in this day and age, you can't loosely throw around homophobic slurs and sexist material as a public figure. You just can't. This macho slop that Gruden was so comfortable slinging around is the old way of football, and it's not welcome anymore. Texts, social media, emails - these things are admissible in actual court, not just the court of public opinion. Don't feel too bad for this guy; he's a millionaire a dozen times over and after some time out of football I'm sure he'll get some lucrative media gig where he'll fall on the sword and swear he's changed.
  15. This or nothing. Stop being stupid, San Jose. Your Fox Kids Saturday Morning Cartoon shark and forced dabblings of orange have ruined what used to be one of the best looks in hockey. Right your wrongs, you stupid bastard franchise.
  16. As I confessed on the last BASS, I'm begrudgingly feeling like the Avs should've kept black, and spent more time figuring out how to otherwise forge their uniforms into something better instead of going full Nordiques. I dunno. They're in a weird place, identity-wise, and really need an overhaul.

  18. Bruce Springsteen sucks. He also annually ruins "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town."
  19. Yeah, but that probably had pretty limited interaction based on the numbers. Maybe under 1000? Which is still very good, but not a big chunk of the NHL fanbase (there's a joke in there somewhere, but I'll let somebody else pick it up).
  20. The Avs, like Gollum, have been clutching tightly to the ring of the 96/01 cup unis, dank and hideous in the gloom of these wretched uniforms that have long been bereft of life. After what feels like centuries, they're slowly being dragged into the light of day, and the course correction is somewhat staggered and painful. That said, there is a good hobbit in there somewhere, but it will take a couple more years to get the slime and neglect scraped away.
  21. The Vikings are a dumbass football team. 64% vax rate, nobody listening to their coach, pissing away their talent, and destined to puke out a ~.500 season of gridiron gristle. They drafted a criminal, too. Just tip top stuff from the Vikings. Not to say the Bears are doing much better. Teven Jenkins has missed a week of practice due to "back tightness" that I have no doubt will require season-ending surgery here in a couple weeks. Their best defensive lineman just got COVID despite being vaccinated, their offensive line depth is a fine collection of swiss cheese, and the table is being set for a really, really frustrating start of a season that already looks woefully difficult on paper.
  22. Doesn't hurt that she is a former lawyer and likely threatens to pull down legal hell if ever threatened by an employer.
  23. I've never liked McNeil from a listener perspective. His bit has been antiquated for a long time, but when he stepped on the largest possible rake at the worst possible time, it was time to put Old Yeller down. It also gives me no satisfaction that Julie DiCaro is still wrenching some sad little career for herself at Deadspin and other places when she is, in earnest, one of the worst sports writers on the internet.
