There's no reason they couldn't do both, they could easily go with an 80s or even 70s-style jersey but brown instead of black.

c'mon Panthers @ Lightning Stadium Series, the one-night only return to the ThunderDome; I don't even care that it wouldn't even be outdoors! :P

I agree that the Thunderdome/Tropicana Field needs to have a Stadium Series before the Trop is demolished.  My statement was strictly based on outdoor games in Florida.

  2. I feel like as time has passed, the Winter Classic has been where most of the blue bloods of the NHL have had outdoor games and the Stadium Series is for the rest.  I dont like it, but it is what it is.  I feel like Columbus falls more into the Stadium Series tier.  Dallas was surprising for the WC, especially since they played Nashville.

As for the chances of Florida or Tampa Bay ever hosting outdoors, I'm not sure we will ever see that.  I listened to a podcast where the host spoke to the SVP and Chief Content Officer for the NHL.  It was said Tampa Bay has been considered, but the weather and dates of when ideal conditions occur are very limited and only falls during possible NFL playoff games (late January-early February was mentioned)

Maybe I'm alone, but I wish the Rays stuck with the plaid bills. Looked good and gave them something unique to build around that wasn't a gradient or muddy colors. It'd work even better with the brighter blue and yellow too.

It was a nice one-off alternate, but I'm sold on it full time.

The Rays have been emphasizing the yellow and the burst logo more and more since sometime last year. Its all over the stadium and their twitter graphics. I wonder if its the start of a gradual change.

With the jersey issues the Phillies have had with their cream alts, and the Reds and using their spring training jersey, I would say the Rays decision would just be part of that.

As a local, theyve been emphasizing the burst pretty frequently for at least 5 years now, so I wouldn't expect to see it used any differently.

  5. Question about the US Open Cup.

What is the reasoning behind some teams playing at alternative venues for Open Cup games?  I assume sometimes its due to scheduling conflicts, but the Rowdies advanced to play Orlando City and the match was announced to be played at Osceola County Stadium, home to Orlando City B.

I think they'll be going with the 2020 look, with the league logo on the right chest and the manufacturer logo on the left chest.

Yeah, especially if Under Armour gets the uniform contract.  Their logo paired with just the X would look wonky.

Just get rid of the damn wildcats. This ain't high school.

To this day (taking the colors into consideration), I still think the LA team was going to be called the LA Wildfire.  The year prior to the team names being announced had some major damage caused by wildfires, so I suspect a name change happened last minute.

That stinks about the rays. I thought it was unique they basically had 4 color swapped jerseys…especially with their moving-wanting to move-owner forcing move situations. The light blue new one was ok for spring training, but it’s too plain now…especially without a front number (which wasn’t needed cause of their huge word mark).  Wonder if it’ll still be paired with the navy ray cap?

Good question, we’ll find out in a week.

  9. Kinda slipped under the radar but it’s being reported by the Tampa Bay Times and other sources that the Rays Sunday light blue alt will be changed to have the burst on the left chest instead of Rays word mark like in previous seasons.

Im honestly surprised something like this hadn’t happened sooner.

Taking up the subject of alternate helmets, I have to issue a correction to an earlier post.

The Cardinals were not the last team to employ a non-throwback alternate helmet in 1957.

The Eagles wore both a white helmet with green wings and a green helmet with white wings in 1969.

So a 2 helmet aesthetic, while not seen in 50 years is not without precedent in the Super Bowl era.

New Orleans also had a black helmet in the 1969 preseason.

Not sure about that part. Ads are on NBA retail jerseys. I think that's the way we will see the NHL go.

Ads are on NBA retail jerseys only sold at the arena.  If you take a look at Fanatics and other retail sites, jerseys with ads are not available.

On another note. I saw that supposedly the schedule for 2023 is changing. Team schedules will be more balanced and will now play at least one series against every team.

Yes, I caught this last week as well.  Now that the DH is across both leagues it makes sense to have more crossover and balance.  I get that division teams should play most often, but when approximately half of a teams schedule is within the division it gets a little monotonous.

I am curious how the breakdown will shake out to.

One thing I don't understand is why it had to be collectively bargained, unless the players wanted a cut of a new revenue stream.  I thought that wasn't the case, and that the money was going to the owners (and presumably trickling to the players through the higher CBT, which we all know won't actually happen.)

That’s exactly why it was collectively bargained.  It’s another revenue stream to add to the pot and how’s its split.
