With so few changes in 2021, I'd expect to see several changes for 2022. Nike's rolling out a new template as well.

Some might be unveiled in February (which would seem odd as it would miss holidays but maybe it takes advantage of the ST surge after football season).

Interested to see what the Royals unveil on Friday.

Well with the impending work stoppage coming in less than a month, it might not be the best time to push merch.

  2. A local sports talk show in Tampa was reporting some interesting details earlier this week with details from the Tweet below.  Of course, I won't believe anything until there some more tangible public knowledge, but some of these details make some sense.

Here's a synopsis of the highlights:

Stu Sternberg is bringing more money to the table for the new Ybor ballpark. Anywhere from $300-400 million. The Seminole Tribe would put up $200 million. City of Tampa would need $200-$300 million to build an open-air ballpark.

According to close sources, momentum is also gaining for Sternberg to FINALLY drop the Montreal Sister-City plan completely.

This shift of momentum comes right after the fact that newly re-elected Montreal mayor Valérie Plante, won the election against one of Stu Sternberg’s hopefuls who were willing to work with the Montreal group led by Stephen Bronfman to fund a new ballpark in Montreal.

The newly re-elected mayor Plante, is against funding a new stadium as well as the rest of Montreal tax payers after they put up a billboard sign near the Trop a couple weeks ago.

The OTHER BIG NEWS is that the current lawsuit against Stu Sternberg from the Rays minority owners has been amended.
Meaning the case would go into a jury trial instead of arbitration. This is BIG since this means there was enough evidence for litigation.

Although the Rays minority owners demand of Sternberg’s removal from Rays ownership is unlikely, the pressure is on Sternberg now.

Close sources from the league have informed JP, that MLB team owners including the commissioner, Rob Manfred were surprised when they read the lawsuit that Sternberg allegedly embezzled more than $500 million dollars from Rays Baseball LLC to his private company account.

Many other MLB owners have stated that the Rays are ruining the system, after the MLB Players Association have filed 2 grievances charges against the Rays, due to Sternberg hoarding the shared revenue given by other teams for his own profit gain instead of using it for the team’s payroll.

  3. Looks like the Jersey hat in this line was taken down, as it doesn't appear on the Fanatics site anymore.

All of the hats in that line I can see are alts, except for maybe that Pens one.  Unless we're getting another yellow Pens alt, but that doesnt make any sense.

Does anybody know when the Devils and Penguins are unveiling their new alternates? Winter Classic? How about ASG jerseys? Any rumours? I bet Vegas has something wild and flashy and not tasteful at all even by normal ASG standards in store for us lol.

The Lightning black alternate they currently wear was released in January of its season, so I presume anything's possible.

  5. As rumored for the MAC.  For CUSA, I know it's lucrative to fight to stay alive but when you're options are Liberty and New Mexico State (and maybe UConn), whats the point?  It's probably best to go independent at least for the short term in football (we all know there are probably more moves happening in a few years) and find a non football home for the rest of the sports.  FIU could go ASun, LA Tech maybe to Southland or WAC, and UTEP to WAC.

The non-football arrangements could even be as an associate member level, but I dont know how those arrangements work.

If all Detroit did was remove the “WCF” patch and maybe had a number font change, would they still need to wait an extra year? It’s not a total uniform overhaul. Just some minor fixes.

You assume that the Lions ownership thinks thats all they need.  While I agree, they dont need much of a change, that decision isnt mine.

Given that article was from March 2021, and there's a 2-year lead time, there's no way they can make any changes for next year besides adding only an alternate helmet.

Agreed, we're looking at 2023 at minimum for any Detroit changes.

  8. Hypothetically (well, lets be honest, its probably more and more likely as the days pass), if CUSA disbands where does everyone left go?  There's talk MTSU and WKU could go MAC.  Would the Sun Belt add FIU?  UTEP is on an island, and fits in the Mountain West and then there's LA Tech.

If anything they might stay around for one more expansion cycle, but the next round could wipe them out for sure.

  9. So now that the American expansion is official, let's consider division alignments.  Currently, Navy is in the west division but with the new additions, I think bringing them East makes more sense.

    East

    Temple

    Navy

    ECU

    Charlotte

    UAB

    South Florida

    FL Atlantic

    West

    Memphis

    Tulane

    Tulsa

    North Texas

    SMU

    Rice

    UTSA

Division crossover for an 8 or 9 game conference schedule (currently the American plays an 8 game conference schedule) is tricky.  Either way, a permanent crossover would be needed.  I think due to lack of history and connection to some opponents, a 9 game schedule might work better.  This would allow for 1 permanent crossover and 2 rotational crossovers.  That way you'd play every team every 6 years, and have a full rotation every 12 (home/road).  The only permanent crossover that stands out would be Memphis and South Florida because of their history dating back to the Metro and CUSA days of the 90s-2000s and maybe Navy-UTSA due to the military ties in that area.

Lost in the double city plan...

Free agents who signed in Tampa probably factored in the lack of state income tax.  Good luck telling them that they're suddenly going to be handed a hefty bill from the Canadian Revenue Agency every year.

I never thought about this until now, this will be a big point of contention for players.

UNC and Wake Forest have scheduled OOC games with each other before, so it's not unprecedented.

True, but in the ACC rotation, the Wake-UNC game eventually happens.  They only schedule it as OOC when they arent scheduled to play.  I dont think you could do that every year, it would eventually have to be a conference game.

I don't know if hosting college football by itself would've been a huge problem - it's not uncommon at all for some NFL stadiums to have weekend doubleheaders - but that the Bucs played on that field on Thursday, then the Florida/USF game, and the Bucs play at home again for Week 2...it might not have been something the Bucs would've appreciated to have that much happening on their home field in that period of time.

The Bucs do have primary lease on the stadium, so they may have been the first right of refusal.  Jacksonville was an easy decision with the Jaguars on the road, but if all three Florida teams were home things may have been done differently.

Saints home opener vs Green Bay has been moved to Jacksonville.  Due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Ida to New Orleans, the team has been practicing in Arlington TX and had hoped to play the game there but couldnt because of a concert at AT&T Stadium. The Saints looked at Florida next as Aaron Rodgers has struggled playing in games in Florida. They ruled out Miami because its a destination spot and easy to travel to for Packers fans. They ruled out Tampa as they were worried the fans of their division rivals would show up cheering against them so they chose Jacksonville as of the three cities that would be the costliest for Packers fans traveling to the game, hoping to keep many Packers fans from coming to the game.

Tampa and Miami both hosted college football games the day before the Packers-Saints game was to be played.  Jacksonville was wide open.

  14. I'm still not sold that everything holds for the next few years.  Texas and Oklahoma leaving the B12 is a huge blow, and once theyre gone would narrow the gap between the bottom of the Power 5 (probably the Big 12) and the top of the Group of 5 (presumably the AAC or MWC).  Fringe schools like Iowa State, Kansas, Texas Tech, TCU, and Baylor could look to move.

...and who knows what happens in the SEC, Big Ten, or even the ACC and Pac12.  Shifts could still be brewing...
