Washington Commanders to debut new NFL identity
spartacat_12 replied to DCarp1231's topic in Sports Logo News
I think the Rams & Commanders are evidence that spending too much time on a rebrand just leads to overthinking and convoluted designs. The Guardians & Elks didn't spend multiple years hyping up their rebrands or wearing placeholder uniforms. They just released the new identities with relatively minimal fanfare. Washington was never going to come up with a name that made everyone happy, but they could have at least kept the uniforms traditional. Then in 5 years, once people have adjusted to the name, they could explore more drastic changes. Boy, the NBA really wanted a team called the Dragons in the '90s/'00s. The Raptors, Grizzlies, and Bobcats almost went with it, and the Nets nearly rebranded as the New Jersey Swamp Dragons. -

Actually, when the Devils updated their home & away jerseys a few years ago they claimed that the new sleeve stripes were supposed to be a nod to the Rockies striping.

So it's looking like the Coyotes are finalizing a plan to play at the new ASU arena for the next 3-4 years while they get their own arena sorted out. https://gophnx.com/2022/01/27/coyotes-in-advanced-discussions-with-asu-to-use-new-multi-purpose-venue-as-interim-arena-solution/ It only has a capacity of 5000, which is half of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, but it does have luxury suites & lounges. -
I'm guessing that they'll use the Giroux cap space to make a big offer to Johnny Gaudreau. A local guy who can help them stay in the mediocre middle for the rest of the decade.

I count white because when you look at the throwbacks they have a balanced colour scheme of red/white/yellow at home, white/red/yellow on the road. The black trim on the logo & numbers is thinner than the yellow, but I guess you could argue black & yellow are equal. Still, there isn't enough black on the white jersey to justify how overused it is on the red. So far, @B-mer is the only person who's posted a concept with black that looks decent to me.
-
The issue with this set was that the colour hierarchy was too different on each jersey. On this one it's red-black-white-yellow, but on the road jersey it went white-red-yellow-black. The black pants didn't look good on the road when black was the 4th most prominent colour on the jersey. Well they brought back Blasty for the reverse retros (although is it really reversed when all you did was change the sleeve/hem colour?), so I would assume that the RR 2.0 will include black to some degree. They could also just pull a Vancouver or Buffalo and bring back the throwback as an alternate.
-
This isn't an improvement over what they're currently wearing. I don't mind the red & yellow bleeding together a bit, since it creates a warm fire effect. No one seems to have an issue with the Kansas City Chiefs not having black in their uniforms, so Calgary shouldn't be a problem either. It's funny that we're already seeing BFBS making a comeback. The Mets throwing back to the black jerseys after going back to the old look, the Sabres bringing back the goat head after finally returning to royal blue, and the Flames most likely bringing back the pre-edge red & black in some form.

Funny enough, one of my fantasy hockey teams is named the Dunder Mifflin Sabres.

MLB Stadium Saga: Oakland/Tampa Bay/Southside

Individual players in baseball probably have the lowest impact on the game of any sport. You could get on base every time you're up to bat, but you still need teammates who can bring you home. You can crush a home run, then the next inning watch your pitcher get shelled from the outfield. Baseball also has the lowest percentage of teams who get into the playoffs. Obviously winning would be huge for Trout's legacy, but you can't just write him off because he hasn't won. Ken Griffey Jr. never got to a World Series, but his impact on the game is still felt.- 3,839 replies

As a kid I always just assumed that a sabre was a type of buffalo/bison because that's all their logo was (I wasn't paying close enough attention to uniforms then, so I didn't notice the shoulder logos).

2021 NFL Season - Adults Arguing About Matt Stafford
spartacat_12 replied to PittsburghSucks's topic in Sports In General
By that logic, why should KC get to win the game without their defense getting a stop? If a team hits a home run in the top of the 10th, would you just end the game there and say "if your pitcher can't get the out why should you get to bat?" If a team scores on the opening drive, the other team should get a chance to match. If they do then you start all over again. Meh, playing a full quarter would most likely lead to teams just playing to run out the clock. I'd rather not see a playoff OT game ending on a guy taking a knee. It's LA. The city is full of people who will hop on a bandwagon when it's the place to be seen. Even the Kings had people coming out of the woodwork when they were going on Cup runs. -

Expanding the league then folding a different franchise right after is a bush-league move that would feel like extorting expansion fees from owners. Contraction in general completely kills a league's credibility, especially when you have several markets without teams that would gladly support a team. At the end of the day, the nature of baseball as a sport is bad for business. You have at least 81 home games, many of which are played in the middle of the day during the week, and you have no clock. The season covers the entire summer, when there are many other things to occupy people's time. Outside of maybe 5 or 6 markets, you can't expect teams to be selling out every game.- 3,839 replies

I'd say the Oilers have this year & next year to get their act together before trading McDavid and/or Draisaitl becomes a legitimate possibility. After next season McD will be 3 seasons away from UFA, and Leon will be 2 seasons away, and I wouldn't blame either one for not wanting to re-sign. They obviously need to address the goaltending, but I don't know if there are any trade options available that would be a significant upgrade. Chicago isn't going to move Fleury unless he asks for a trade. Korpisalo & Khudobin looked like decent options going into the season, but have had terrible numbers so far. They might be better off throwing a ton of money at Campbell or Keumper this summer.

What are you talking about? He's a Montreal native who's fully bilingual and previously was a partner at a Montreal-based agency that represents a lot of the league's top French-Canadian talent. It's pretty clear that Gorton is the one who is going to be building the team, but needed a French speaking figurehead to appease the media. Guys like Briere, Luongo, or Patrick Roy could threaten Gorton's job, so instead he went with an inexperience candidate who can be the fall guy if this rebuild/retool doesn't go well.

I'm wondering if Adidas could just be offering pre-edge throwbacks in the new template to fans. We've already seen the Stars one, and I haven't heard any rumblings of Dallas actually wearing it in a game. Buffalo seems like they're trying to pretend that black & red was never part of their colours, so I'd be surprised if they actually bring those back on the ice.

So you want a Tampa jersey with a Blues logo slapped on it? St. Louis should go with a yellow jersey for the next RR.
-
That was mentioned in the article, and considering how much Foley loves the gold jerseys I'm sure it's been suggested. It seems like it'd be a divisive move though. People either love or hate them. For the RR, I'm sure the league is going to force teams to come up with something new, even if it's just a recoloured version of the old ones (i.e. burgundy Nordiques/Avs, green Wild Stars, white Peyote Coyote).

It's been a fantastic story in Manitoba and, to a lesser extent, in Canada, but I don't think it's necessarily had a huge impact on the league as a whole. Things in Winnipeg have pretty much gone as well as they possibly could have, but they've still hit the small market ceiling and don't have anywhere else to go. They have far & away the smallest arena in the league, so despite selling out almost every game, they've still been a bottom 5/bottom 10 team attendance-wise. They haven't been losing money, but are still the 26th valued franchise in the league. When you consider that this is a best case scenario for Quebec City, I can understand the league's hesitation. -
It might be a little early for a '22-'23 season thread, but Bill Foley recently confirmed that the Knights will be getting a new jersey for next year. https://vegashockeynow.com/2022/01/15/bill-foley-confirms-golden-knights-to-get-new-third-jerseys-soon/ According to Foley, “We do have a new jersey coming. We do. I don’t have one handy but we sent it back for a couple of modifications but it’s a good one and you’re gonna like it." The gold alternate has only been around for 2 seasons, so I'd be surprised if it gets replaced already. This most likely is going to be part of the Reverse Retro 2.0 program. I'd expect a black jersey.

At the end of the day, if the NHL hadn't decided to widen its footprint in the '60s & '70s the WHA would've done it, and would have potentially overtaken them. -

Based on your logic, the league shouldn’t have ever expanded beyond 6 teams in ‘60s. I mean were people in Missouri or California really begging for NHL hockey back then? -

I was working in the front office when they moved to those uniforms, and I couldn't hold back my eye rolls when they got shown to us. Last year they were smart enough to at least get rid of the hashtag when they updated the uniforms (they still say RNation though). The NHL has a few teams with winged logos that have similar centering issues (Detroit, Ottawa, St. Louis, Philly). The Wings used to place their logo with the wheel centered on the jersey instead of the whole logo. -
Apparently this series is responsible for the deterioration of Adam McKay & Will Ferrell's personal & professional relationship. Ferrell is a huge Laker fan and said that Buss was his dream role. He was initially linked to the part before the producers decided to go with Reilly instead. McKay didn't even call Ferrell to let him know before the story broke.
