  1. The red pants are the one thing that's kept Carolina from looking too much like the Devils & Blackhawks, so this is a downgrade. It's basically a 2002 Canada Olympic uniform. I'd expect them to wear the black alternates at home in the playoffs again this year, so maybe they're testing the waters so that they don't need to alternate between shells/gloves in the postseason.
  2. Yeah it was a mixture of generic, "condolences to his family" messages from people close to the organization, and people beating around the bush saying stuff like "he was a passionate owner who leaves behind a complicated legacy". But hey, even Harold Ballard had some nice things said about him just after he died.
  3. Melnyk was actually the reason the entire downtown arena project fell apart. The last time he commented on the situation he discussed building a new arena in Kanata or potentially looking across the river and building in Gatineau. As terrible as this is for his family & loved ones, I think the downtown arena is more of a possibility now than it was before.
  4. From my understanding, last year most of the companies that were advertised on helmets got those stickers for free. Because of the shortened season, teams would have had to provide partial refunds to in-arena sponsors, as they didn't get a full season's worth of exposure. Instead of refunding these partners, a lot of teams offered free helmet ads instead. This year those companies had to actually pay if they wanted the helmet ad space, so they most likely balked at the price.
  5. Plenty of businesses will turn down a quick buck if it might cause long-term damage to their brand. The Yankees could make billions if they decided to sell the naming rights to their stadium, but in their minds that would be detrimental to their brand. The Miami Heat turned down a $10 million offer from BangBros to buy the naming rights to their arena. The Broncos rejected a similar offer from a cannabis company. Obviously these examples are a bit different from jersey ads, but my point is that most businesses do have their limits when it comes to how they make money.
  6. This seems to be a fitting time for me to repost what I sent in the '21-'22 NHL thread last year:
  7. Sadly the early reaction I've seen online & among my Leaf fan friends has been mostly positive. And anyone who has criticized them has just been called a sour boomer.
  8. And instead of being a separate jersey, the black & gold look the team teased is just this jersey turned inside out.
  9. I understand the Bruins going for it, but I don't think the East is all that balanced. I'd say that Tampa, Florida, and Carolina are in a tier of their own, with the other 5 playoff teams in the tier below. Unfortunately for Boston, they're almost guaranteed to play one of those top 3 teams in the first round. It's cliché to say it all comes down to goaltending, but that's likely the case for Boston. Ullmark & Swayman have a combined 1 game of playoff experience, so it's going to be interesting. The next 3 seasons Minnesota is going to be hit with $12 million, $14 million, and $14 million in dead cap money from the Suter & Parise buyouts, so it makes sense to try and make a run of it this year. Fiala is most likely getting traded this summer, and Dumba could be a cap casualty as well.
  10. Meh, I can't imagine this wordmark will detract from their primary identity. I personally wanted them to go =O= full time, but the return to 2D has been a success, so I don't imagine them changing any time soon.
  11. A little bit too much gold for my tastes, but a solid update of the old logo. I wonder if they'll use that on next year's reverse retro. Maybe a red version of these:
  12. I'm wondering if putting out hype videos like this was a condition of the partnership. If not, it's a complete slap in the face of fans to tease a sponsor patch by using the words "Our Crest". Also, I'm really curious who the Blue Jackets, who play in Nationwide Arena, located on Nationwide Boulevard, next to Nationwide Plaza, down the street from a soccer team with Nationwide on their kits, will feature as a jersey partner .
  13. Yes, it involves the team's primary colours, but it also introduces a random new colour that isn't found anywhere else in their brand. The numbers somehow look cheap and over-designed at the same time, and the decision to include white & bone in the same uniform is awful. At least the Cardinals were restrained enough to keep a basic block font, and not try and throw in some trendy bs to appeal to hypebeasts. Best case scenario would be something like the Vikings rebrand.
  14. A black version of the current red home jersey seems like one of the only options Chicago has left.
  15. A few turn of the century NHL expansion teams have recently retired their first numbers. The Blue Jackets went with the appropriate font for Nash instead of the current one, which is a nice touch. The Koivu one is a bit odd. They used the current road name & number font, but the bottom of the banner has the striping from the old Minny jerseys.
  16. But can't 3rd parties still sell merch with just the T? Most people don't have the attention to detail that is commonly seen on these boards, so I doubt they'd care about a shirt missing a barely visible ARENAS wordmark.
  17. Football games have almost double the commercial breaks that baseball games have, so I don't think it's imminent. Maybe down the road they throw some decals on the back of helmets.
  18. The NFL also has beer & liquor partnerships, but that doesn't mean players are allowed to show up to practice hammered. If players are in Vegas playing the Raiders, they're allowed to play a few hands of blackjack, so it's not like they can never gamble. Players not being allowed to bet on games is no different than insider trading being illegal. You still have to maintain integrity. The NFC West is playing the AFC West this season, so they'll be seeing him again fairly soon.
  19. The league confirmed that next year's Stadium Series game in Raleigh will feature the Canes hosting the Capitals. We saw the leak of Carolina's jersey before they postponed the game, and I'm assuming they'll stick with it. Washington will probably be wearing white. Hopefully we can finally get the Weagle on the front of a jersey, but maybe they do a reverse of the current navy alternate.
  20. This is great. The Cup is such an iconic image that it isn't necessary to distract from it with a wordmark. And I was never a fan of italic letters on a patch with straight elements.
  21. I think the antlers might've looked better if they went with yellow ones on a green shell. The Rams, Eagles, Vikings all use their darker colours for the helmet with a lighter decal. Maybe they can give that a try as an alternate helmet.
  22. Except they decided to change the numbers to single-layer white, which made them look more like the Packers than the EE logo ever did. Hopefully they go back to yellow numbers with this update.
  23. The amount of comments I've heard from casual uniform observers saying "why aren't the Canucks wearing these full time" shows just how much nostalgia clouds judgement. They literally made black their primary colour in the '70s because they wanted to look more "aggressive", and came up with a bizarre logo that's just a skate & the team name, but looks more like a planet or a plate of spaghetti. It also didn't help that Calgary added black in the '90s, so they had the same colours, albeit arranged differently.
