  1. Toronto has announced that they will be adding seating to BMO Field in order to meet FIFA's minimum capacity requirements. It is going to go from 30,000 to just over 45,000, with the extra seats being added behind the goals. They've said these will be temporary, but they're leaving the door open to making them permanent if TFC thinks it's worth keeping them around. There's currently a new subway line planned for Toronto that will have Exhibition Place/BMO as one of the terminuses, but unfortunately it isn't supposed to be done until 2030.
  2. Colorado has looked dominant, but I'm not ready to write Tampa off just yet. They've always brought their best to closer they've gotten to elimination, and as the old cliche goes, you aren't in trouble until you lose at home. I still think the Avs win it, but I'd be very surprised if it doesn't go at least 6 games. Maybe that's just wishful thinking since this is too good of a matchup to be done so quickly.
  3. My high school's sports teams were called the Avalanche, and we also used burgundy & blue as our colours. When they decided to add an actual mascot, the students got to vote on the name and what it would be. I think our options were a snowman, a snowball, a snowflake, a St. Bernard, and a yeti. The yeti ended up winning the vote. We didn't live anywhere near mountains, so it made even less sense for us than it did Colorado.
  4. You forgot about the Raptors. My guess is the black & yellow will be around in some form for the next few years as it slowly gets phased out. The remixed purple jerseys will be alternates in 23-24, and maybe move to primary status the year after that, with one or two of the black/white/yellow being demoted to alternates.
  5. The alternate helmet could be navy for a Fearsome Foursome navy & white throwback.
  6. The fact that he couldn't even muster a "that's tough", "that's cold", or "that's fire" is a bad sign.
  7. I'd prefer having consumers who want to engage with my product but don't want to pay in the traditional sense over having an entire generation lose interest altogether. You at least know there is still some form of demand, you just have to pivot and find a new way to offer it. It took the music business a little while to figure it out, but they were able to get people paying for music again, which 15 years ago seemed impossible.
  8. The thing is, going with the name Angels is already a nod to the team playing in LA. If you translate "The California Angels" into Spanish it is literally "Los Angeles de California".
  9. Millennials have dealt with all the same things. Every generation has consumed sports differently than the one before it. People probably thought cable tv was going to be the end of people buying tickets. Sports eventually adapted by building more downtown venues surrounded by entertainment districts to enhance fan experiences. Kids might be on their phones while a game is on tv (and I'm sure plenty of Boomers do the same thing), but who's to say they aren't consuming/sharing sports content. Cable is expensive, but this is the most technologically proficient generation to-date. Finding ways to stream games for free isn't hard.
  10. I mean it's not some egg avatar posting a poll that got 12 votes. It's a fairly notable Vancouver sports show posing the question, and there were thousands of votes. Is it the absolute truth of the situation, no, but it gives you a general sense of how sports fans feel.
  11. The law of averages only works if it's a different team winning the Cup every year. In the 29 years since Montreal's last title only 14 different teams have won. Also if you expand the sample size to the last 38 years (including this year), Canadian teams have won 8 Cups. That works out to just over 20%.
  12. For those who don't subscribe to The Athletic, he essentially debunks all the theories for why it's gone on this long and concludes that's it's likely some sort of combination of factors. This poll is a good indicator that this whole narrative is more important to the media than it actually is to Canadian hockey fans.
  13. Bieber is a Leafs fan, so it makes sense that he would be oblivious to playoff games being scheduled past the first round.
  14. Including white elements on the bone jersey is probably the most egregious part of the uniform. Bone/cream/off-white can work if it is used as a replacement for white. This St. Louis Blues jersey is proof that the colour combo can work if executed correctly:
  15. It's too bad that they aren't going with team-specific colours for the Finals patch.
  16. I'd say smaller market teams like the Jets or Oilers have more in common with a team like the Sabres than they do with the Leafs. The economics of Alberta vs. Ontario are just as different as Texas vs. California, so every team has its own unique challenges & benefits. I'm obviously aware that they are referring to the franchises, but my point is that the importance of a Canadian team winning the Cup is overblown. If Edmonton had won this year that would've been a big deal for the city of Edmonton, not the entire nation. I'm sure plenty of people living in Nova Scotia were happier to see MacKinnon move on than the Oilers.
  17. It's also been nearly 30 years since one of the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, Sabres, Blue Jackets, Panthers, or Predators has won a Cup. In theory one of them should win every 5 years. Its just as arbitrary of a list of teams. The media who emphasizes this drought is the same one that tries to declare the last Canadian team remaining in the playoffs is "Canada's team". But the Stanley Cup has been brought back to Canada literally every summer. When Ottawa lost to Anaheim in the Finals the Ducks had more Canadians on their roster than the Sens did. We've gotten to see multiple Olympic golds, World Cups, World Championships, and World Juniors titles over that stretch.
  18. People talk about this "Canadian Cup drought" as if every Canadian player plays for one of the 7 teams. It's a completely arbitrary group of teams who just happen to all have home arenas north of the border. Every single Stanley Cup winner has had several Canadians on their roster. The so-called "drought" is just a media fabrication.
  19. Thank god they finally decided to not have both black & navy blue in the colour scheme, but that's the only element of this that is a clear upgrade. Removing the sword from their identity is an awful decision. A name like Cavaliers has lots of great design potential, but now they look completely generic. The CAVS script is awful. They're trying to do way too much with it. Combining 3 different wordmarks from your history into 1 just makes for a disjointed mess. Having a logo that's supposed to look like the championship trophy is ridiculous, especially for a franchise that's only won 1 title in over 50 years. I'm pretty indifferent on the athletic gold vs. metallic gold. It's strange though because on the new merch it looks a bit more yellow than it does on the press release.
  20. It is funny that a team called the Cavaliers has had 2 primary logos featuring a net, but a team called the Nets hasn't ever had one.
  21. What's crazy is that this was the 22nd time a series went 7 games with the home team winning the first 6, but in those game 7s the home team has gone 11-11. Even though Nedeljkovic didn't have a good year, I still can't believe they dumped him for almost nothing. Hanging all your hopes on 2 injury prone goalies was a bold strategy, and at the end of the day goaltending was the difference maker. I don't think they'll be able to bring back both Niederreiter & Trocheck, but they have a decent core of quality young forwards that should be ready to take a jump/next step (Necas, Jarvis, Gunler). For the last couple years I've said they should try to make an offer for Draisaitl, but I can't see the Oilers making any drastic moves now that they've made it this far.
  22. I'm all for more green being used in baseball, but the Rockies have had the same colour scheme for 30 years, and purple is already unique.
  23. Yeah it's awkward that the stripes carry from the roundel onto the shield, but aren't on the inner circle.
  24. The Oilers have to get past Colorado/St. Louis first, which isn't going to be an easy task. I'm hoping we get a McDavid vs. MacKinnon battle. I can't believe they called back that Flames goal at the end. I can see the argument for him kicking it in, but it was nowhere near distinct enough to overturn the call on the ice. They really just need to change the rule to allow any kicked in goals to count. That will get rid of any grey area around the interpretation of "distinct kicking motion". You're allowed to kick the puck to your teammate for an assist, why shouldn't you be able to kick it in? Guys aren't going to suddenly start winding up kicks like they're going for a field goal.
  25. I'm trying to understand how a basketball with an abbreviated wordmark slapped on it "adds some local edge. As for the wordmark, it seems a bit sloppy with too many jagged edges/corners. They should've had the spur coming off of the bottom left of the X and/or the A at an angle similar to the primary logo. The Texas outline logo is pretty amateur-looking as well. It almost looks like someone pasted the main logo on top of a clip-art state outline, then just erased the top part with the U.
