  1. They were never asking for taxpayer money to build their arena. It was a privately financed plan, and the Yotes were even willing to cover the cost of remediating the land. Were there some property tax breaks associated with the plan? Sure, but it's not like keeping the site as a landfill is bringing in new tax dollars.
  2. The nickname came from the number of colleges/universities in Nashville. The Parthenon was built because of the city's nickname, not the other way around.
  3. If it were some sort of substance issue I'm sure he'd be going into the Player Assistance Program rather than having his contract terminated. Based on the fact that this was called a "workplace matter" which didn't involve any teammates or criminal acts, it seems like some sort of harassment of a team employee. It feels like the kind of thing that might've just been swept under the rug in the past, but the new Blackhawks regime needs to make it clear that they won't be tolerating any sort of questionable behaviour from anyone within the organization.
  4. It's tricky because you don't want to substantiate the ridiculous rumours by acknowledging them, but at the same time you need to make sure you're protecting the 18 year old face of your franchise from harassment. They have a presser called for 4 pm CT, so we'll see if they say anything more than what was in the statement.
  5. I don't mind the skate jersey in a vacuum, and actually prefer the current version to the throwback, but I hate how every post about the uniform gets flooded with, "They should be wearing these full time" comments. I would hope that the Canucks marketing team know better than to actually bring them back as the primaries, but as Don Draper says, nostalgia is delicate but potent.
  6. That would definitely be an improvement. But upon a little digging it seems like they've been using the block numbers on the helmets since the start of this season. It's odd because they were previously using the matching font.
  7. The matte shouldn't make too much of a difference, but I'm not sure why they switched to block numbers on the helmet when they jerseys use Agency.
  8. The NFL made helmets mandatory in the ‘40s, and teams were using designs on them not too long after. Helmets didn’t become widely used in the NHL until the ‘70s, so they were never considered a focal point of the uniform. Helmets are the most iconic piece of equipment in football, and are often the only place where a team displays their logo. With a big logo on the chest, along with more space on the sleeves for stripes, the sweater does most of the heavy lifting in hockey. What makes you think the Carolina Hurricanes have any sort of national fanbase? They seem to only live rent free in the heads of hockey fans who are perpetually online.
  9. The NHL has arranged for separate helmet sponsors for these Global Series games. Ottawa had a different one on their helmets yesterday too.
  10. Glad they decided to make a choice between teal & sand, instead of trying to do both, and the A on the chest of the home jersey is much better than the D-Backs wordmark. I don't mind the D snake, but would've preferred the updated one they used when they first switched to brick red.
  11. There's a difference between an expansion of the existing championship/playoff format and a gimmicky tournament that's basically bribing players to care about regular season games in November & December. Your analogy would make more sense if we were discussing the recently added play-in rounds of the playoffs, which have been much more well received than this tournament.
  12. From what I've heard it seems like the players have been the ones pushing for the league to start this season. I think if it were solely up to the people running the league, they'd have delayed it a year to get all the logistics ironed out without rushing. Obviously the generic placeholder jerseys aren't great, but considering the team names that leaked it might be better for them to get back to the drawing board.
  13. It seems like a combination of a few things. They lost around 2000 season ticket holders during the pandemic, which was due to people cutting spending, changing entertainment habits, and issues around vaccine mandates. They started their first season ticket campaign since initially moving from Atlanta this spring, but I don't think the veiled threat of "buy tickets or the team might move again" went over very well. The honeymoon period of the NHL being back in Manitoba is over, but their owner is still one of the richest people in Canada, and is committed to keeping the team there. I think we're still a long ways away from relocation being a realistic option.
  14. I'm almost certain they won't be worn during the game. The Flyers wore them in warmups with their reverse retros last season, so I'm guessing Carolina will do the same thing.
  15. I don't mind it. It mixes things up a bit from the traditional Blackhawks or Northwestern 3 stripe design.
  16. Basketball games literally have fans sitting on the court. When a visiting player is shooting free throws you get multiple sections of fans trying to distract them. The Clippers are purposely designing their new arena to have no clubs/suites behind one of the nets to maximize the amount of fans that can create distractions. Hockey has fans sitting right up against the glass, frequently banging against it whenever the play is close. You also get people sitting directly beside the penalty boxes. Professional athletes don't even notice this stuff.
  17. @andregunts questioning why everyone is so critical of uniforms on a logo & uniform forum.
  18. If the Sharks had been allowed to carry over every goal from the previous games they still wouldn't have won last night.
  19. The fact that they're using single layer captain's patches on the orange jerseys (which I don't think they've ever done) is proof that there'd be no legibility issues with white names on the back.
  20. I wonder if we'll see any players publicly complain about these courts. Although Adam Silver might have a sniper ready for any players saying anything negative about this stupid tournament.
  21. When the Capitals first entered the league they wore white pants with their red jerseys before eventually switching to blue.
  22. I came across someone selling a book that was used by the Nets when they were pitching Carmelo Anthony to sign with them as a UFA. This was when they were prepping for their move to Brooklyn, but hadn't completed their rebrand. It includes an unused Brooklyn jersey in the old Nets colours photoshopped onto Carmelo.
  23. They're just designating certain regular season games as "tournament games", so they count towards both their regular season records & tournament group standings. Only the two teams who make it to the finals will play an extra game. It remains to be seen whether or not the players will actually care, but there is a financial prize, and the league is likely pressuring the PA to make sure guys know that this is important to the league.
  24. Well MLB did do the Players Weekend jerseys that had nicknames on the back, and the NBA did nickname jerseys 10 years ago as well. It would just be boring in hockey because 95% of the jerseys would just have a 'Y' or an 'ER' added to the end of the guy's name.
  25. Between this comment, and the Oceans Eleven inspired 'Heist' ad that the league has been running, they really seem to be leaning on the finals in Vegas as a selling feature for this gimmicky tournament. What are they going to do once Nevada inevitably gets their own team and the novelty of the league being there isn't around?
